                                            ADJECTIF  OU  ADVERBE ?

     This bird is beautiful                                                                 Sarah is serious, she is extremely serious

      It sings beautifully                                                                                  She works  very seriously

 Un adjectif modifie un nom ou un pronom.

  il peut être près du nom (épithète) ou séparé du nom (attribut) par le verbe 'be' ou un verbe de perception: feel, taste,

  smell, sound, hear,  look, seem.

 Un adverbe modifie un verbe, un adjectif ou un autre adverbe.

This bird is beautiful	beautiful est un adjectif qui modifie le nom 'bird'
It sings beautifully	beautifully est un adverbe qui modifie le verbe 'sings'
Sarah is serious	serious est un adjectif qui modifie le nom 'Sarah'
She is extremely serious	extremely est un adverbe qui modifie l'adjectif 'serious'
She works seriously	seriously est un adverbe qui modifie le verbe 'works'
She works very seriously	very est un adverbe qui modifie l'adverbe 'seriously'

La plupart des adverbes sont formés à partir d'un adjectif auquel on ajoute -ly

   a tortoise is slow;   a tortoise walks slowly.

Cependant il existe des adverbes qui ont la même forme que l'adjectif.

    a rabbit is fast;   a rabbit runs fast.

 Les mots suivants peuvent être adverbes ou adjectifs. 

Good ou well ?

 L'adverbe qui correspond à 'good' est 'well'

   Mary is a good cook.   Mary cooks well.

On dira: The rose smells good; the soup tastes good; the film is good  (adjectif attribut après un verbe de perception) 

Mais:  I live well; Did you sleep well?; Well done!; Tom speaks well      (well adverbe)

remarque:

well peut être un adjectif mais uniquement lorsque l'on parle de la santé:

I don't feel very well today. You look well.

---well a pour comparatif 'better' et pour superlatif 'best'

    better, best ainsi que les comparatifs et superlatifs de 'early, far, fast, hard, late'

   peuvent être adjectifs ou adverbes selon leur utilisation dans la phrase .

      I'll see you later (adv.)    The meeting was postponed to a later date (adj.)

     I like this dress better (adv.)  The best way to do that is... (adj.)

     My house is farther down the road (adv.)    The fastest way to learn English is...(adj.)
