Hello you all...

I know that some of you are on holiday... and I know that some lucky ones are going to leave for the sun soon...
Like the preceding one, this exercise is not easy at all ... It's undoubtably a
The collective correction will be posted on Sunday, 26 April , and I'll correct your tries when you indicate that you've done your best!

A) Translate into English :

B) Matching... again! It's my little revenge , just to show you that not all matching exercises are easy...
Put a numbered element with a lettered one, using one different link word for each sentence. You may start with the element you prefer... Please write the sentence entirely.

Until, unless, although, if, so that.

1) he buys a new alarm-clock.
2) he had bought a new alarm-clock.
3) he hadn't bought a new alarm-clock.
4) she bought him a new alarm-clock.
5) he bought a new alarm-clock.

a) he was often late.
b) he shouldn't be late.
c) he would have been late again.
d) he'll be late again.
d) he was late again.

C) Translate into French :

“Francie saw the tree leave the tree man’s hands… She staggered as the tree hit them. Neeley went to his knees but she pulled him up fiercely before he could go down. Then she felt a sharp pain at the side of her head where the trunk of the tree had hit her. She felt Neeley trembling. But they were smiling. Had they not won the biggest tree in the neighbourhood? Some of the boys hollered ‘Horray!’ A few adults clapped. The tree man eulogized them by screaming: ‘and now get the hell out of here with your tree, you lousy bastards”.

Go for it !

Hello !
Happy you found the exercise funny, alpiem...
Chocolat...I don't understand what you did with your tenses in that same exercise...
To all of you ! You can combine the 3 elements the way you fancy, but you're not supposed to change anything in my sentences...
Have fun!

Quelques adultes applaudissaient.
Le bucheron leur faisait une éloge en vociférant:"Et maintenant foutez le camp d'ici avec votre arbre, affreux bastards";

Je n'ai pas bien su comment traduire: "the tree man",
Merci encore pour ce casse-tête chinois

Hello Here4U
It's always a pleasure to spend a few hours with your exercises.
I think I've done my best: I won't make any change, now. Feel free to have a look whenever you wish
A)
1) How many times have you been to England so far ? Me ? Twice a year, every year since I was seven years old, that is to say, for thirty years.
2) How could he forget that he had promised that he would not hurt a hair of her head ?
3) Now, he's in jail, and won't get out for at least twenty years... that is, when he is at least sixty years of age...
4) Last week, he was questioned for hours by an inspector who then released him for lack of evidence... Now, the evidence against him is clear. He won't get away with it ...
5) Despite his enormous wealth, he doesn't look happy... Besides, when we hear him always complaining, there's nothing we can do : we understand he's selfish and stingy

B)
He was late again although he had bought a new alarm-clock
He'll be late again unless he buys a new alarm-clock
If he hadn't bought a new alarm-clock, he would have been late again
She bought him a new alarm-clock so that he shouldn't be late
He was often late until he bought a new alarm-clock

C) Difficile de traduire tree man...

Hello dear Here4u!

A) Translate into English:

How many times have you been to England ( so far)? I've been there twice a year, every year since I was seven, in other words for thirty years.

How could he get to forget he'd promised he wouldn't dare touch a hair on her head?

He's now in jail and won't get out for twenty years, at the very best...that is, when he is fully sixty...

Last week, he was interrogated for hours by an inspector before being released for a lack of evidence...Now, the proof against him is conclusive. He won't get away with it.

Although fabulously wealthy, he doesn't look happy. Moreover, when you listen to him complaining all the time, you can't do anything and realise he's selfish and stingy.

B) Matching again, using one different link word for each sentence.
Until, unless, although, if, so that.
1) Unless he buys a new alarm-clock, he'll be late again.
2) He had bought a new alarm-clock so that he shouldn't be late.
3) If he hadn't bought a new alarm-clock, he would have been late again.
4) Until she bought him a new alarm-clock, he was often late.
5) Although he bought a new alarm-clock, he was late again.

Thank you for this interesting exercise despite "the tree man " I had to struggle with! Probably unsuccessfully but, wait and see...

apart from the context, it's difficult to understand the story
but always a pleasure to try to understand and to translate the best possible.
Thanks to you here4u!

Hello, you all ... and those who are still working !
I'm quite dumbfounded seeing that you have worked, and worked a lot and very hard on this 'mean exercise'...especially as many of you are about to leave for holidays, on them, or just coming back from them...
Thanks for making such effort !
Have a wonderful end of week...

Hello !
Correction collective dimanche soir ! Sorry !

Hello !
Here is the collective correction. You must have received your individual one yesterday and I know that some of you have been working to correct their errors.
Thank you for being so hardworking and willing. Thank you for your very kind messages too...

I) Translate into English
:
‘How many times have you been to England?’
‘Well! I went twice a year, every year since I was seven, that is for thirty years.’

- une fois, 2 fois, 3 fois = once, twice, three times …
- une fois par an = once a/per year

How could he have forgotten that he had promised he wouldn’t lay a finger on her?

- ‘toucher à un seul de ses cheveux’ = aux US : 'to touch a (single) hair of her head' est fréquent ; GB = to lay (laid, laid= poser) a finger on somebody.
Il a oublié = he has forgotten => Il a pu oublier = he could have forgotten ; comment a-t-il pu oublier = how could he have forgotten? …

Now, he’s in jail and won’t be released before 20 years, at best … that’s to say (which means) when he’s 60, at least…

Être libéré de prison = to be released from ;
- au mieux = at best ; au moins = at least ;

Last week he was questioned for hours by a detective who then released him for lack of evidence… Now, the evidence against him is obvious. He won’t get away with it…

- interroger par la police = to question/to interrogate.
La semaine dernière ‘il a été interrogé pendant des heures’ : moment appartenant au passé révolu => prétérit au passif => ‘was questioned’. Etre libéré = to be released ;
- Des preuves = proofs ; / evidence = indénombrable au singulier.
- S’en tirer sans être puni = to get away with stg.

In spite of his huge wealth (Though he is tremendously wealthy), he doesn’t look happy. Besides, when you hear him, always complaining, nothing can be done, you can only understand that he is a selfish and stingy man…

- Malgré = Despite = in spite of + nom/pronom ;
=> un passif s’imposait : 'nothing can be done!'

II) Matching... again!

1) He buys a new alarm-clock so that he shouldn't be late.

2) Although he had bought a new alarm clock he was late again.

3) If he hadn't bought a new alarm-clock he would have been late again.

4) Until she bought him a new alarm-clock, he was often late.

5) Unless he bought a new alarm clock he'll be late again. (Unless + forme affirmative).

III) Translate into French :

“Francie saw the tree leave his hands… She staggered as the tree hit them.

Betty Smith, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

"Through many experiences, Francie Nolan loses the innocence that marks her character when the book begins. One of these experiences is the tree-throwing ritual. One Christmas, Francie and Neeley participate in an old Brooklyn tree-catching tradition. They remain standing while the biggest tree in the lot is thrown straight at them. Although they are thrilled with the thought of a Christmas tree, the reader understands the cruelty of this ritual, especially when Katie begins to worry that her children do not even know the hardship they live in."

‘Allez-vous en d’ici’/’tirez-vous d’ici’/ ‘fichez-/ foutez-moi le camp’ => Tout ceci convenait très bien ! (… avant qu'il change d’avis !)
