Exercice 39/Toujours plus loin
Message de here4u posté le 25-04-2015 à 22:47:53 (S | E | F)
Hello !

Still on holiday..., which doesn't keep you from going on working!
Exercise 38 was difficult, this one is not easier, I'm afraid! Yet, I know you like having to overcome difficulties ...
Well! It's a , no doubt... and the correction will be published on Tuesday, May 5th.
Don't forget to make a sign when you're ready to be corrected... It's a real help for me!
I hope you will enjoy this exercise. It was made especially for you and the needs I feel you have!

A) Translate into English :
( S’il vous plaît, pas ‘It is not because …’ Merci !

B) Replace the underlined expressions by an adverb:
1) “It’s so well done!”, he said with sarcasm.
2) “I know the truth…”, she answered with mystery.
3) “An interesting question…”, she laughed without ease.

C) Matching forever …
Start with one lettered element; then add a link word and the suitable numbered one, making the necessary changes in this third part! (A little freedom, at last! )
As long as - Although –Because – Otherwise – Instead of -
a) We must find a larger room
b) Many people are bored in a town
c) Lots of people live in skyscrapers
d) People will dream of the country
e) While in London, visit museums a little more

1) there is very little place in large towns
2) you go to the cinema so often
3) many people will have to stay outside
4) it offers a large variety of entertainments
5) life in a large town remains very difficult

D) Translate into French:
“One day when I picked up some marbles in the playground a boy cursed me by shouting I was a rotten bastard. I thought he’d rumbled my secret, and hit him so hard it got around I really was a bastard. Not that this grieved me because nobody had any proof, and also I’d become pals with a couple of boys I felt sure were as much bastards as I was.”

Alan Sillitoe,
Saturday Night, and Sunday Morning. 1958.

Enjoy !

Great exercise ! Thanks a lot Here4U!
Very tempting indeed 'It's not because'
I think I've finished now. I'm looking forward to your correction . Have a wonderful week, in spite of the return of the freshness

A)
1) Why always make the same mistakes again and again ? How could I finally make it possible for my work to pay off, and allow me to be proud of myself ?
2) I would never have expected to win that reward. Besides, it had never occurred to me that you might have thought that I deserved it.
3) Hardly had he opened the parasol when a downpour suddenly began to fall and a clap of thunder rang out around him.
4) My speaking italian to your friend shouldn't make you remain silent and sulk.
5) Did she stand you up ? It looks like she did, and I'm raging mad at her because nobody has ever done that to me in my whole life...

B)
1) “It’s so well done!”, he said sarcastically
2) “I know the truth…”, she answered mysteriously
3) “An interesting question…”, she laughed uneasily

C)
We must find a larger room otherwise many people will have to stay outside
Many people are bored in a town although it offers a large variety of entertainments
Lots of people live in skyscrapers because there is very little place in large towns
People will dream of the country as long as life in a large town remains very difficult
While in London, visit museums a little more instead of going to the cinema so often

D)

Good evening Here4u and thank you for this tricky exercice and a real feast of dificulties. However we love it...

You can correct my try.

1.Why we keep making the same mistakes again and again? How could I sort this problem out so that my work should be profitable at last and that I should be proud of myself?

2.I would never expected to win that reward. Moreover, it had never occurred to me that you might have thought that I deserved it.

3. No sooner had he open the parasol when a downpour began to fall and in addition to that a thunder rang out from all directions.

4 Because I am speaking to your fiend, it doesn’t mean, that you have to keep silent and sulk.

5. Did she stand you up this could be the case and I am furious at her because nobody has ever acted with me like that in my whole life

1) “It’s so well done!”, he said sarcastically
2) “I know the truth…”, she answered mysteriously.
3) “An interesting question…”, she laughed uneasily.

D)

Hello dear Here4u!

Here is my incomplete try, since I've my tax return to fill in...but you can correct the parts A,B and C in case you're getting bored...

A) Translate into English:

Why always making the same mistakes, again and again? How could I arrange it so that I would finally be repaid for my work and would be proud of myself?

I woul have never dared hope to win this reward. Moreover, it had never come to my mind that you could have thought I deserved it.

No sooner had he opened the parasol that it suddenly started pouring with rain and that there were thunderclaps all around.

You don't have to keep quiet and sulk on the pretext I'm speaking Italian to your friend.

" Has she stood you up?" " Looks like I'm furious because I've never been treated this way in my whole life"

B) Replace the underlined expressions by an adverb

1) "It's well done!", he said (with sarcasm) ironically
2) "I know the truth...", she answered (with mystery) enigmatically.
3) "An interesting question...", she laughed (without ease) awkwardly.

C) Matching forever

a) We must find a larger room, otherwise many people will have to stay outside.
b) Many people are bored in a town although it offers a large variety of entertainments.
c) Lots of people live in skyscrapers because there is very little place in large towns.
d) People will dream of the country as long as life in a large town remains very difficult.
e) While in London, visit museums a little more instead of going to the cinema so often.

I do hope you didn't catch cold this morning!
Thank you for this exercise.
I'll try to finish it later, but, I have to confess I don't trust all those "bastards" very much... There may be a trap in this version..."Bastard" or "bastard"? That's the question...

yes ! Lakata! You're right... the 'bastards' are tricky ... and I was really expecting your interpretation, just to see how you'd tame them ... Come on ! I'm waiting!

I was drenched this morning ... but our lily-of-the valley was sold by half past 12!

Dear Here4u,

A) Translate into English :
Why constantly reiterate the same mistakes again and again ? How could I manage to render my work remunerative, thus making me feel proud of myself?
I would never have expected to win this award. Furthermore I could never imagine you would have thought that I deserved it.
No sooner had he opened the umbrella than a downpour began to fall and thunder rumbled from all sides.
( S’il vous plaît, pas ‘It is not because …’ Merci !
There is no reason you should remain silent and sulky if I'm speaking Italian with your friend.
Did she break the appointment you ? Yes that’s right/exactly and I’m furious, because I have never been swindled in such a way in my life by anybody.

B) Replace the underlined expressions by an adverb:
1) “It’s so well done!”, he said sarcastically.
2) “I know the truth…”, she answered misteriously.
3) “An interesting question…”, she laughed awkwardly.
C) Matching forever …
Start with one lettered element; then add a link word and the suitable numbered one, making the necessary changes in this third part! (A little freedom, at last! )
As long as - Although –Because – Otherwise – Instead of -
a) We must find a larger room, otherwise many people would have to stay outside
b) Many people are bored in a town, although a large variety of entertainments is being offered there.
c) Lots of people live in skyscrapers, because very little place where to live is left in large towns
d) People would dream of the country as long as life in a large town will remain so difficult.
e) While in London, visit museums a little more, instead of going to the cinema so often.

A very nice exercise, I enjoyed a lot. I thank you very much and wish you a pleasant weekend.

Yours friendly

Hello here4u
Happy, raining May 1st, and I hope you sell lots of lily of the valley.
You'll find below my try.

A)
1) Why keep on making same mistakes again and again. How could I manage my work to finally pay off and be proud of me?
2) I 'd never expect to win this award. Moreover, it never crossed my mind that you could have thought I deserved it.
3) No sooner had been the parasol opened that it was pouring and thundering, on all sides.
4) This is not a reason as I'm speaking Italian to your friend to remain silent and sulking.
5) Did she stand you up? It looks like she did and I'm furious because no one has ever acted this way in my all life.

B)
1) ' It's so well done!', he said sarcastically.
2) ' I know the truth...', she answered mysteriously.
3) ' An interesting question...', she laughed uneasily.

C)
1) We must find a larger room for your birthday's party otherwise many people will have to stay outside.
2) Many people are bored in a large town although it offers a large variety of entertainments, but most of the time they are living far away from downtown and can't enjoy them.
3) Lots of people live in skyscrapers because there is very little place in large towns to own a house.
4) People will dream of the country as long as life in large town remains very difficult because of noise, pollution and lack of space.
5) While in London, visit museums a little more instead of going to the cinema so often; I bet you'll like it even you don't seem convinced right now.

D)

Hello again

A) Translate into English:
1) Why am I always fixing the same mistakes over and over? How can I improve so that my work finally pays off and I am proud of myself?
2) I would never have expected to win this award. Additionally, it would never have occurred to me that you would have thought I deserved it.
3) Hardy had I opened the umbrella than I got caught in a downpour and the thunder resounded all around.
4) Just because I speak to your friend in Italian doesn't mean you have to remain silent and sulk.
5) "Did you get stood up?" "You could say that I'm furious because no one has ever done that to me my entire life..."

D. Translate into French:

'I have to confess I don't trust all those "bastards" very much... There may be a trap in this version..."Bastard" or "bastard"? That's the question...'

Exercice 39 : A) Translate into English :

Why always make the same mistakes over and over? What could I do so that my effort (could/might) finally pay off, and I could be proud of myself!

-Why/why not…? + infinitif sans TO – pas de forme en –ing, pas de TO => RIEN ! Facile, non ?
- to MAKE a mistake = faire une faute.
- réussir à = to manage to / to succeed in + -ing ; How could I manage to
- So that => utilisation d’un modal ‘may/might’ souvent remplacé par ‘could’ moins formel)
- être fier de = to be proud of => la fierté = 0 Pride.
- Fier de moi = fier de moi-même => of myself, of himself, of herself …

I’d never have expected to win this award. Besides, it had never occurred to me that you could have thought I deserved it.

-I’d = I would never have expected/hoped = conditionnel passé qui indique un irréel du passé.
- it never came to my mind = OK, mais nettement moins ordinaire = ‘it never occured to me that …’
- tu aurais pu penser = possibilité modalisée par can/could au passé => you could have thought

Hardly had he opened the parasol than/when a downpour started falling and the thunder clapped all around…

- 'Hardly' (semi negatif) et tous les négatifs en début de phrase entraînent une inversion du sujet => 'Hardly had he opened … thaN/when...'
- start + ing = se mettre à
- ‘thunder’ est indénombrable => singulier ‘thunder’ is clapping everywhere/all around/ …=> a clap of thunder.

My speaking Italian to your friend doesn’t make/mean you have to keep silent and sulk.

Ahhhhh !!! ‘it is not because you are ….’ ! Ah … Renaud … You’ve been the scourge of many aching teachers …
Well well … Beaucoup d’entre vous ont bien vu qu’en disqualifiant ‘it’s not because’… vous arriviez très vite à : ‘le fait que je parle’ …=> ah !!! Voilà qui devrait vous faire penser à … UN GERONDIF, bien sûr …
- te taire = to keep quiet = to keep/remain silent; to close your mouth ; ‘Shut up’ est un peu fort !

‘Have you been stood up?’ ‘It looks like it, and I am furious thinking she did because nobody has ever done that to me in my entire life…’

- poser un lapin = faire attendre en vain quelqu’un à un rendez-vous = to stand someone up => to be stood up. Vous savez comme j'aime les passifs ! Ca passe mieux !
- Attention à ne pas me faire (trop) souffrir ! … (après Renaud, vous voulez m’achever !) ‘Looks like she did !’ ou même ‘looks like’(moins souvent) tout seul, est fréquemment entendu, mais est nettement, au départ, un Américanisme qui est encore refusé aux examens et concours, sauf précisions spéciales ! Même si c’est ‘facile’, abstenez-vous un jour d’exam … Je vous rappelle l’orthodoxie : ‘like + nom/pronom’ et ‘AS + verbe ou proposition’. (sorry NP ! I’m expecting your mp to protest! OK! You've written already! Glad to hear from you… )
- 'I’m angry when I think about it' convenait TB.
- all my life = Ok. N’oubliez pas ‘my entire/whole life’. = vie entière = toute ma vie.

B) Replace the underlined expressions by an adverb: certains ont changé d’adjectifs … pourquoi?

1) “It’s so well done!”, he said with sarcasm. => sarcastically. (sarcasm = Nom => adjective => sarcastic + ally = adverbe)
2) “I know the truth…”, she answered with mystery. => mysteriously.(mystery = N => mysterious = Adj=> + ly = Adverbe => mysteriously.)
3) “An interesting question…”, she laughed without ease.=> uneasily.(ease = Nom => easy = adjectif facile=> facilement = adverbe => easily ; le contraire de = uneasily.)

C) Matching forever …
Start with one lettered element; then add a link word and the suitable numbered one, making the necessary changes in this third part!

a) We must find a larger room, otherwise many people will have to stay outside
b) Many people are bored in a town although it offers a large variety of entertainments
c) Lots of people live in skyscrapers because there is very little place in large towns.
d) People will dream of the country as long as life in a large town remains very difficult.
e) While in London, visit museums a little more instead of going to the cinema so often.
(instead of + ing !)

D) Translate into French:
Attention !

“One day when I picked up some marbles in the playground a boy cursed me by shouting I was a rotten bastard. I thought he’d rumbled my secret, and hit him so hard it got around I really was a bastard. Not that this grieved me because nobody had any proof, and also I’d become pals with a couple of boys I felt sure were as much bastards as I was.”

bastard n slang, pejorative, offensive (cruel or contemptible person) (très familier, vulgaire) connard nm
(familier) salaud nm
Our boss is a real bastard.
Notre patron est un vrai connard.
Notre patron est un vrai salaud.
bastard n dated, offensive (illegitimate child) (enfant illégitime) bâtard nm
The other children called him a bastard because his parents never married.

Alan Sillitoe, Saturday Night, and Sunday Morning. 1958.

YOU'RE GREAT!
