Hello Dear friends, long-time ones, Newcomers and future participants,
Attention !

2. Ça me rend malade de te dire cela et je me rends également compte à quel point tu peux être mal à l’aise à cause de cette mise au point nécessaire …

Hello here4u
This is my homework, and it's OK for me.

I) Translate into English:
1. I do understand what He must feel in such circumstances. I've already lived that.
2. It makes me sick to tell you that, and I am very well aware how you can be ill at ease due to this necessary clarification.
3. Slander and harassment : here are two attitudes that multiply, and that disgust me deeply.
4. There is a snow storm and black ice ... It would be very unwise to take the road in such weather! I'd prefer you stay sleeping here.
5. Well done not have listened to me when I asked you to shut you up! What you have just told me is important and scandalous. I'll look into it.

Last week he was trained for hours to prepare this competition, he is all the more disappointed not to have won it..... (j'ai un doute sur : he was trained, j'aurais penché pour : he had trained ??? )

III. Translate into French:
" It was high time. Snow had fallen in the morning, but now the sky was clear and with a glance at the frosty stars, he stepped out quickly. He had at this interview to make a certain decision and the hesitation he felt about it had lurked throughout the evening at the back of his mind like a malaise that had only to become a bit more definite to be felt as a pain."
Somerset Maugham, Flip of the coin.

Hello Here4u,
This is my try !

I)
-I do understand what he must feel in those circumstances. I’ve already lived that.
-It makes me sick to tell you that, and I also realize how much you may feel embarrassed because of this necessary issue.
-calumniating and harassing: those are two increasing behaviors and they deeply disgusts me.
-There is a storm, with snow and blackice… it would be inconsiderate to drive with such a bad weather. Stay here sleeping!
-Congrats for not to have listening to me when I asked you to remain quiet. What you are coming to say to me is important and scandalous. I will take charge of it.
-You want to prove you are not worried.. yet it would be perfectly normal and you should accept some help.
-The more you close yourself, the more difficult it would be finding a solution, and the less fast you will be released.

II)
-You wish you wouldn’t have to refuse this invitation, but you don’t have the choice. You ought to do it.
-They had not seen each other for years, and they stared to one another for during some long minutes without a word.
-Last week, he had been training during hours for that competition and he is even more disappointed not to have won it.

III)

Thank you again !!

Hello Dear All, Harworkers and Lovers of English ...

Here are my suggestions inspired by yours... as ever... Congratulations for the good work you gave me in spite of the difficulties of the whole exercise. Thanks for the effort you put in this work, and th great quality ofthe results... The difficulties were little, but many... tenses (and "aspects") were mixed on purpose and most of you outmaneuvred my tricks...
Thanks too for all your messages and flowers and cute pets following your individual corrections (I still have the last two ones to send... )

I) Translate into English:

I do understand what he must be feeling in these circumstances I’ve been there before!

I ‘ve been there before ».

2. Ça me rend malade de te dire cela et je me rends également compte à quel point tu peux être mal à l’aise à cause de cette mise au point nécessaire …

It makes me sick to tell you this, and I also realize how uneasy we may feel because of this necessary clarification…

- It makes me sick/ it sickens me
- uneasy/ill-at ease
- se rendre compte = to realize ( ) et realise ( )
- À quel point = to what extent ou simplement “HOW + ADJECTIF »= leçon N°106936 = test à revoir pour un grand nombre d’entre vous. )
- une mise au point : an adjustment /a clarification.

Slandering and harassing: here are two attitudes that are becoming more and more common and that I hate deeply.

- calomnier = to slander/defame/denigrate/disparage/libel
- harceler = harass/pester/badger/hassle
- more and more common/ that are spreading
- which disgust me/put me off profoundly/deeply.

Reste donc dormir ici.

There’s a snowstorm and some black ice… It would be very unwise to hit the road in such weather. You should stay overnight!

- black ice/ice patches/sleet
- It would be very careless/dangerous/foolish/unwise TO do something: beaucoup d’erreurs, ici pour la construction de ce conditionnel.
- hit the road / set off / set out / take the road / take to the road/
- to stay over/to sleep over/ to stay overnight/stay for the night

Congrats on not listening to me when I asked you to keep quiet. What you’ve just told me is important and outrageous. I’ll deal with it.

- Bravo! (seul) = Well done ! /kudos/Congrats ! = Congratulations ! = Félicitations! Congrats = *Abbreviation for "Congratulations."= a good equivalent for "Bravo," which can sound pretentious in English with the wrong people.
-kudos\-(ˌ)dōz\Etymology:back-formation from kudos (taken as a plural) Date:1926
1 : award, honor
2 : compliment, praise [...]
usage Some commentators hold that since kudos is a singular word it cannot be used as a plural and that the word kudo is impossible. [...]
» = congrats on doing /congrats on not doing (congratulations on +V + ing)
-se taire = to keep quiet/ not to speak/ “shut up” trop informel et fort.
-“Tu viens de me dire” = passé immédiat = “you’ve just told me”.
- I’ll deal with it./I’ll take care of it/ I’ll see to it/ I’ll look into it/I’ll see to it/ I’ll take it into account.

You (do) want to prove that you’re not scared. Yet, it would be totally/perfectly/normal to be and you should accept to be helped.

- you want to show/to prove (j’ai mis la forme d’insistance « do » qui n’est pas obligatoire, mais que je “sentais bien” …)
- not scared/not frightened
- pour une meilleure compréhension de la phrase, j’ai rappelé « to be » = to be frightened

The more cagey (you’ll be), the more difficult it will be for him to find a solution, and the less fast/quickly you’ll be relieved.

- To be cagey/to be secretive/to be withdrawn. to withdraw, withdrew, withdrawn = verbe irrégulier … pas de O !

You wish you didn‘t have to decline this invitation, but you really have no choice. You have to do it.

- exprimer le regret : ici : I wish I didn’t have to …/I wish I wouldn’t have to (exprime plutôt le mécontentement) leçon 103970- Avec le prétérit modal négatif, nous exprimons à la fois le regret et l’irréel de la situation.
- refuser une invitation = to refuse an invitation /to decline an invitation /to turn it down
- L’obligation était imposée de l’extérieur => "you have to do it".

They hadn’t seen each other for years and looked at each other without speaking/silently for long minutes.

Last week, he trained for hours for this competition, and he is all the more disappointed as he hasn’t won it.

- he trained for hours/he did hours of training= événement daté et révolu => prétérit.
- is all the more disappointed not to have won it.

III. Translate into French:

“It was high time. Snow had fallen in the morning, but now the sky was clear and with a glance at the frosty stars, he stepped out quickly. He had at this interview to make a certain decision and the hesitation he felt about it had lurked throughout the evening at the back of his mind like a malaise that had only to become a bit more definite to be felt as a pain.”

Somerset Maugham, Flip of the Coin.

(2) He had to make a certain decision= a decision of some sort= a decision or another one= to face a dilemma.

-Titre : to flip a coin/to toss a coin/to play heads or tails= tirer à pile ou face.

Ouh ... C'était difficile ! Vilaine que je suis ... Encore BRAVO à vous tous.
