Message de here4u posté le 18-06-2016 à 09:24:13 (S | E | F)
Hello, dear Friends, addicts, amateurs and future workers...

Don’t be worried, I give you THE FORCE…

He had a way when any of them joined us of resting against a wall with his hands in his trouser pockets and listening to them with a sort of well-bred smile, a knowing smile, that seemed to me the height of elegance. And it wasn’t that he was a softy because he was an excellent boxer and wrestler and could easily have held his own with them any time, but he didn’t wish to. He was superior to them. He was – there is only one word that still describes it for me – sophisticated.”

Frank O’Connor, The Man of the World 1957.

Thank you again ! - My try is ready to be corrected.

Hello Here4u,

Translate into English
1 –I’ve seen her child being dragged away fom her arms by the County Social Services, quite sure they were working for the good of everyone
2 - In order that I stick up for him, don’t try to make me feel guilty by telling me I am responsible for his disappointments
3 – I’m fed up with your fits of anger. Pipe down ! You bore me stiff and disturb the neighbours !
4 – Before the show, after many rehearsals, you just have to gather with the other players and try to make the most of fun. Forget the stage fright and let’s go !
5 – No matter how much I rehearse my parts, I always hesitate at the same points… and my partners and I sometimes happen to skip some lines ! Maybe to finish more quickly… Ah ! stage fright !

II – Bonus
1 – Lying and making up.. some can do that easily, but He, who had lived through that before, knows he is not gifted to ad lib
2 – We wish we could let you in the theater straight away. The show has been on for quite a while now and we can’t disturb the actors
3 – She’s all the keener to meet him again as she has not seen him for weeks and he had hardly talked with her for a minute on the phone

III – Translate into French
“I admired Jimmy almost as much as I admired his house, and for much the same reasons. He was a year older than I, was well mannered and dressed, and would not associate with most of the kids on the road at all. He was – there is only one word that still describes it for me – sophisticated”

No pleased at all by my translation into French but that's it.. Thank you once more.

FINISHED
Hello Here4U
Thanks a lot for this great exercise. All the excerpts you give us to translate make us want to read more about the books !

I)
I could see her child being torn away from her by the County Social Services, convinced they were working for the good of all.

If you want me to stand up for him, don't try to make me feel guilty, arguing that I'm responsible for his setbacks, will you ?

I'm fed up with your angry outbursts ! Watch your tone ! You're hurting my ears and disturbing the neighbours !

Before the shows and after the numerous rehearsals, we only have to get together with the other partners and try to have fun as much as possible. Let's forget about the stage fright and let's go !

Ah ! Le trac !
No matter how much I rehearse my roles, I'm still hesitating on the same lines ... and with my partners, we even happen to skip ones ! To get it done faster, I guess ... Ah ! Stage fright !

II.
Lying and making up stories ... some people do that easily... but he has been there before and knows he's no good at improvising...

We wish we didn't have to deny you entry the theatre immediately. The performance has already begun for long minutes now, and we can't disturb the actors.

She's all the more impatient to meet him again as she hasn't seen him for weeks and he has talked to her on the phone for hardly a few minutes .

III) « I admired Jimmy almost as much as I admired his house, and for much the same reasons. He was a year older than I; was well mannered and dressed, and would not associate with most of the kids on the road at all. He had a way when any of them joined us of resting against a wall with his hands in his trouser pockets and listening to them with a sort of well-bred smile, a knowing smile, that seemed to me the height of elegance. He was – there is only one word that still describes it for me – sophisticated.”
Frank O’Connor, The Man of the World 1957

Hello dear here4u,
Here is my work, ready to be corrected.

I have witnessed how her child has been torn from her arms by the county's social services, who believed they were acting/working for the good of all/ for the common good.
Don't try to blame me, asserting that I am responsible for his disappointments only for the fact that I defend him.
I've had enough of your tantrums. Drop in pitch! You're breaking my ears/you're deafening me/you make my ears broken and annoy the neighbours!

Before the performances/shows, after many rehearsals, we must simply group together with the other partners and try to have as much fun as possible. Put aside/forget about stage fright and let's go!
Ah ! Le trac !
No matter how hard I repeatedly rehearse my rôles, I always hesitate at the very same points/passages....and with my partners, it even happens we go so far as to jump some cue! Doubtlesslly in order to finish faster! Oh, Stage fright!

II.
Lying and inventing.....somebody can do it easily.... but he has already lived such an experience and is aware not to be gifted with the talent of improvisation.
We regret to deny your entering the room right now. The play already started many minutes ago and we must prevent the actors from being disturbed.
She is all the more looking forward to meeting him again, since she has not seen him for weeks and she has not spoken to him but for a few minutes on the phone.

III) Translate into French:

He was – there is only one word that still describes it for me – sophisticated.”
Frank O’Connor, The Man of the World 1957

Many thanks for this fascinating exercise.
I hope you have a fine Sunday.
So long.

Hello Dear All!

I) Translate into English:
I have seen her kid being torn away from her arms by the County’s child welfare services, convinced that they were working for the public weal.
- “lui être arraché”= to be ripped out/ off from/ to be torn away from/ torn off from ; la particule “away” (ou “off”) indique l’éloignement entre l’enfant et sa mère ; “from” : la préposition indique la provenance = “de ses bras”.
- the social services/ welfare services/child welfare services
- convinced/ persuaded
- they were doing it/ working for
- working for everyone’s sake/the good of all/the common good/the public weal/the common weal.

Don’t try to guilt me into defending him, blaming me for his disillusions.
- So that I felt like defending him/In order to make sure I’ll defend him/
- saying/ telling me I’m responsible/ blaming me for his disillusions / disappointments/ trouble
.

I’ve had enough of your fits of anger! Turn it down a notch! You’re bending my ears and disturbing the neighbours.
- J’en ai assez de = I’ve had enough of /I’m fed up with/
- your outbursts of anger/ fits of anger/ surges of anger/ temper tantrums.
- "Baisse d’un ton" = familier => Turn it down a notch/ tone it down (transitif)/ watch your tone/
- Tu me casses les oreilles = You’re making my ears bleed/ “you’re a pain in the ears”/ you’re hurting my eardrums/ you’re bending my ears

Before performances, after many a rehearsal, we simply have to build up our team spirit with our co-actors and try to have as much fun as possible. Down with the jitters/ the stage-fright … Let’s go for it!
- “… après les multiples répétitions” = after many a rehearsal/ the many rehearsals
- with the other players/co-actors
- “et essayer de s’amuser le plus possible » : vous avez tous senti « try to have fun » … mais très peu ont construit la comparaison avec cette expression, ce qui s’imposait pourtant : « try to have as much fun as possible. »
«we forget the jitters»/ the stage-fright
- « Down with …. » = à bas …. ; le contraire : « Vive …. » Long live …. /Long life to …
- “Let’s go!”/ Here we go! / Go for it !

Ah ! Le trac !
However often I repeat my lines, I keep hesitating at the same passages and with my friends and co-actors, we even happen to skip a few lines! To get it over with more quickly, I presume… Oh yes! Stage-fright!
- Even though I repeat my lines again and again/ However often I repeat/ However conscientiously/ No matter how often/ No matter how much…
- always hesitate/waver/ flounder/
- have trouble with/struggle with/get tripped up by/ stumble over the same passages/ lines
: “a cue”= "A signal, either verbal or physical, that indicates something else, such as a line of dialogue or an entrance, is to happen."= le mot final de la tirade du partenaire qui est le signal que la réplique est terminée …
- en finir = do away with/ to wind up/ to get it over with

Telling lies and making up stories… some people do that easily… but he’s been there before and knows he’s no good at stage improvisation.
- Inventing/ coming up with/ making up + COD (to make up = aussi se maquiller, ou flirter … d’où l’importance du COD!)
- to be good at something/ to have a talent for doing [sth]/ to have a knack for doing [sth]
- stage improvisation/ theatre improvisation/ ad-lib

We’re sorry we have to deny you immediate entrance to the house. The performance started long minutes ago and the actors can’t be distracted.
- To have to deny you immediate entrance to a place/to refuse immediate access to
- Disturb/ interrupt/ distract/ distracting the actors is unthinkable.

She’s all the more impatient to meet him again as/since*/she hasn’t seen him for weeks and since* he hardly spoke to her on the phone for a few minutes.
- * since = car, puisque
- d’autant plus que = all the more as/since – all the + adj court + er as = all the bigger as / all the better as = comparatif irrégulier.

III) Translate into French:
« I admired Jimmy almost as much as I admired his house, and for much the same reasons. And it wasn’t that he was a softy because he was an excellent boxer and wrestler and could easily have held his own with them any time, but he didn’t wish to. He was superior to them. He was – there is only one word that still describes it for me – sophisticated.”
Frank O’Connor, The Man of the World 1957

(2) "a year older than I" = anglais soutenu … L’anglais quotidien serait “than me”.
» « she wasn’t …

Congrats to all of you! and thanks for being so enthusiastic and faithful!
