Ex: 99/ Happy New Year
Message de here4u posté le 30-12-2016 à 16:31:33 (S | E | F)
Hello my Dearest Friends,

Here is Ex. 99 Happy New Year! , which, once again, isn’t easy at all… It’s a and the correction will be online on Sunday, January 15th 2017. (it’s always a strange impression to have to change years so abruptly…) I hope you've had a good time with your friends and families and that your horizon is looking bright!
To help you in this work, of course, I give you THE FORCE.

I) Translate into English:

II) Translate into French:
« She looked at me. Studied me like something that had dropped from the sky. Outside the rain was pelting. April – Easter coming up.
I said, “The thing to do, when he brings it, is not to drink it. Not to drink it and walk out”
She said, “I was planning on that.”
He brought the coffee… Half of it was in the saucer already, more after he’d plonked it down.
We got up together, scraping our chairs. “A shilling,” he said, folding his arms. She stubbed out her cigarette. I took a shilling from my pocket, slapped it down. A cheap round, a bargain. We edged past him while he stood like some tree. Then we were out of the door – and the rain was suddenly stopping, switching itself off like a trap; a gleam in the sky. As if that might have been part of a plan too.
Graham Swift, The Light of Day.

III) Don’t forget to CORRECT the mistakes made by my poor student!
*** (please, never ever try to imitate, or even translate his text!)
I’m wanting to thanks you very well of the corrections you have sugested me. Please, donn’t you imagine which I am not enough work. I am really, but the english look and sounding such stranger for me than you are much charmed for help me.I knew than thnks you of you whole, I have done many progresses, and I thank it mustdon’t are been the first time I have thunked you. Ia’m such glad I have becomen less Worst. Like Here4u told “U’r GRATE” and I wisht u a new grate hear 2017!

Joyeuses Fêtes à tous and of course, THE FORCE is with us all, more than ever.

Just to give this exercise a little taste of the Season, I suggest we all write a New year's Resolution for the site... (or for anything or any other place: You may write funny or humorous, or serious ones as you wish... and you may write it in French or English (as you like). Here's one of mine!
I resolve to get an unlimited voucher to THE FORCE (for You and me to give one another!)

Hello Here4U and Happy new year for you and everyone !
I'd love to say 'I resolve not to make any big mistake any more' but that would sound a little presumptuous, wouldn't it? (and perhaps too big a challenge for me to cope with as well) , so I'd just say : 'I resolve to participate to all your exercises'. I know I can do this ! (Still, I'll try for the other resolution )

I) Translate into English:

In a fit of pique, he had told you things he didn't really mean. Now, he has felt guilty for his impatience and utterly miserable.

It sounds as if some have never heard people suggest that phones be turned off during a meeting... How inconsiderate !

"What kind of plot is he hatching ? " "Don't worry, he's so clumsy that all this will end up against him. He'll be a scammed scammer"

One thing led to another, from clues to testimonies, the investigator traced the offender back to the brains of the operation.

You're out of sorts this morning ! Let me guess... You partied all night again, didn't you ? Fine thing ... Really, men are all the same !

II) Translate into French:
« She looked at me. Studied me like something that had dropped from the sky. Outside the rain was pelting. April – Easter coming up. I said, “The thing to do, when he brings it, is not to drink it. Elle me regarda.

hello everyone here, and you HERE4U, I wish you the best for this New year, and above all, peace, love and harmony.
This is my try, ready to be corrected.

I) Translate into English:
Out of anger and in a fit of pique, he told you words he didn't really think. And now, he feels so bad of his impatience and he is so miserable.

It looks like some have never heard of turning off their phone during a meeting ... Shame on them !

What sort of conspiracy is he plotting? "Do not worry, he's so clumsy that all this will end to his detriment." It will be the swindled swindler. "

One thing leading to another, (gradually), from clues to testimonies, the police found the trail of the thief, and he went back up until the head of the operation.

Maxwell 5.
You are not well awake this morning !let me guess.... Did you party again all night ?
Well, that's nice ! You, men, all the same !

II) Translate into French:
Elle me regardait.

III) Don’t forget to CORRECT the mistakes made by my poor student!
I want to thank you a lot for the corrections you suggested to me. Don't think I am not a hard worker. I really am, but English looks and sounds such a strange language for me, that you will be very nice if you can help me.
(...................) sorry, I was not able to understand what he wanted to say.
I am so glad not to become the worst . Like Here4u I want to tell "you are great", and I wish you a happy new year 2017 !!!!

2 – Some people seem not to have heard the suggestion that phones should be turned off during a meeting.. What a nerve !
3 – What is he plotting ? Don’t worry, he is such an oaf that this will turn to his disadvantage. He will be the swindled swindler.
4 – One thing leading to another, from clues to testimonies, the police hunted down the criminal to the brains of the operation
5 – You’re under the weather this morning ! Let me guess.. You had a wild time, hadn’t you ? Disgraceful ! Well really men… all the same !

II – Into French
She looked at me. Studied me like something that had dropped from the sky. Outside the rain was pelting. April – Easter coming up. I said “The thing to do when he brings it, is not to drink it. Not to drink it and walk out” She said “I was planning on that” He brought the coffee… Half of it in the saucer already, more after he’d plonked it down. We got up together, scraping our chairs. “A shilling” he said, folding his arms. She stubbed out her cigarette. I took a shilling from my pocket, slapped it down. A cheap round, a bargain. We edged past him while he stood like some tree. Then we were out of the door – and the rain was suddenly stopping, switching itself off like a trap, a gleam in the sky. As if that might have been part of a plan too.

III – Poor student…(hard to understand)…
I’d like to thank you a lot for the corrections you suggested to me. Please don’t think I’ve not been working enough. I really do but English looks and sounds so strange to me that it is nice to you to help me. I know it’s thanks to you all. I have made a lot of progress and I think this must the first time I thank you. I am so glad I’ve improved. As Here4u says ‘You’re great’ and I wish you a great new year 2017 (My God it’s worse and worse…)

Thank u once more and again Happy New Year

Good evening, dear here4u,
I hope you and the whole band of hard workers have a great New Year!
Here is my work ready to be corrected.

I) Translate into English:

Being full of rage and irritation he addressed you some bad words, which he didn't really think . Now he blames himself for his intolerance and is now awfully
unhappy.

It seems that some people had never been suggested to turn off their mobiles during a meeting....what cheeky devils!/ what an effrontery!
What kind of intrigue is he plotting? Don't worry, he is so clumsy that all this will end to his detriment. He will be "the cheated cheater"/it will be the cheater to be cheated.
Little by little, from clues to testimonials, the investigator found the criminal's trail and went up until to identify the mastermind of the criminal enterprise/deed.

Hello !!!!
ARGHHHHHH !

Hello, dear Friends, and faithful workers!

CONGRATS to all of you !

I)Translate into English:
Out of anger and through spite, he had told you some words that he didn’t really mean. Now, he’s blaming himself for his impatience and is feeling as miserable as sin.

- par = out of ; par amour = "out of Love"; "through spite" = par dépit.
- qu’il ne pensait pas “ = qu’il ne voulait pas dire … => pensez à « to mean ».
- s’en vouloir = to regret/ to blame oneself for/ to feel bad about something/ to feel as guilty as hell/ to kick oneself for something
- être malheureux comme les pierres = to be as miserable as sin (le péché).

It sounds as if some of you had never been suggested to turn off their cell phones during a meeting… How inconsiderate!

- on dirait que = «it looks as if»= si l’on constate en voyant ; « it sounds as if » si l’on constate en entendant ; “it seems that” est plus neutre, moins précis.

What kind of plot is he hatching? Don’t worry, he’s so clumsy that all this will end up at his expense. He will be the swindled swindler./ the swindler swindled.

- un complot = plot/ contrivance/ intrigue/ machination/ conspiracy (un peu fort)/
- Comploter = to hatch, to weave=> be woven, be afoot
- To his detriment/ at the expense of/
- un arnaqueur = bilker/ con man/ conman/ diddler/ con artist/ deceiver/ finagler/ fraudster/ gyp / gypper / hustler/ swindler/ trickster/ welsher ; the conning conned./the swindler swindled./ the hustler hustled / the trickster tricked.

One thing leading to another, from clues to evidence the investigator traced the culprit and back up to the mastermind of the operation.

- De fil en aiguille = One thing leading to another
- Témoignage = a testimony/ evidence (uncountable in the singular)
- L’enquête = the investigation/ the inquiry
- Retrouver la trace de : to find the trail/ to trace
- Malfaiteur = wrongdoer/ villain/ culprit/ offender/ transgressor
- “le cerveau de = “ the mastermind of …

You’re really out of sorts this morning! Let me guess! You’ve been partying again all night. Well, that’s nice! Argh … Men will be men!

- Tu n'as pas les yeux en face des trous ce matin = You’re really out of sorts this morning! /you’re hungover, this morning! /bleary eyed/ groggy/ woozy/ woolly/
- Toute la nuit = all night/ The whole night.
- “men will be men” = côté inexorable … c’est dans la nature de l’homme d’être ainsi … (= blood will tell! = Bon sang ne peut mentir !)

- to plan = prévoir, avoir l’intention de.

III) Don’t forget to CORRECT the mistakes made by my poor student!
*** (please, never ever try to imitate, or even translate his text!)

I’m wanting to thanks you very well of the corrections you have sugested me. Please, donn’t you imagine which I am not enough work. I am really, but the english look and sounding such stranger for me than you are much charmed for help me.I knew than thanks you of you whole, I have done many progresses, and I thank it must don’t are been the first time I have thunked you. Ia’m such glad I have becomen less Worst. Like Here4u told “U’r GRATE” and I wisht u a new grate hear 2017!

I’d like to thank you very much for the suggested corrections of my mistakes. Please, don’t imagine that I’m not working enough. I am, really! But English looks and sounds so strange to me that you’re really charming to help me / helpful to me! I know that thanks to all of you, I have made much progress. I think/ I'm afraid it must be the first time I have thanked you. I’m so glad I have become a little better. As here4u said :”You’re GREAT!” and I wish you a wonderful year 2017!

- “I’m wanting” = impossible; "want" ne prend pas la forme en –ing ; "I want" est maladroit et péremptoire : je préfère « I’d like » = « I would like ».
I suggest that you/he correct … » soit d’une forme en –ing : « I suggest correcting … »
- Attention à la position de "enough" : "to work enough = verbe + enough" // "to do enough work = enough + Nom."
- "Si étrange" = "SO + adjectif" ; such est impossible ici. Il faudrait un nom … "such a strange language".
- « grâce à » = thanks to ; à cause de = because of
- to make progress (pas * to do)
- « progress » est indénombrable singulier : "your progress is huge". "You've made much progress"
- it’s the first time + present perfect.
- « grate » = une grille ; « great »
