Ex 109/ another difficult one!
Message de here4u posté le 30-05-2017 à 17:10:08 (S | E | F)
Hello Dear Friends and hardworkers!

Here is THE FORCE, you’ll need it !

I) Translate into English:
Maxwell!

II) Translate into French: (sequel to the preceding translation.)
I looked at him. I thought: Why did you make and keep an album full of photographs of my mother? Why? And how did I know then aged nearly thirteen, that darkening summer evening, that Donald had been in love with my mother? What made me sense that? How do children intuit these things? I have no idea. But I remind you I was no ordinary child. Already in those days my mind was working in distinctly personal ways. I cannot explain, though, why this conclusion presented itself to me with such particular force, but as I flicked through the pages, contemplating this pretty young stranger who had given birth to me the day she died, I felt myself brimful of a new liberating certainty. I had divined something; I possessed my first adult secret. I nourished it and let it grow inside me, warm and exquisite.
William BOYD, The New Confessions.

III) Playing and working with words:
Using THE 8 WORDS given below ( - the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses (or forms) you fancy-, 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words; you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.

(You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!)
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés :
(To) BRIBE – (To) BRIDGE – NEVERTHELESS – BESIDES – BALANCE – BOUNDARY – BASHFUL – BLATANT – emploi d’un adjectif composé.
C'est parti ! Courage à tous ! I know you'll surprise me again!

Hello Here4U
A new challenge, above all the fourth sentence which is a real pleasure. it is late and I need time to solve it and writet my sentence containing 8 words. Thanks a lot

READY TO BE CORRECTED

The whole of his proposals won’t be accepted, so, it is no use, bending over backwards in order to do him a favour. You just end up getting on his nerves.

We must have faith, it was only a warming alarm and she will make the changes she needs in her life

I want you to watch her closely and find out whom she is joining with: which are the tasks she keeps for herself and those, she delegated? Ambition has a strange effect on people, especially, when they had an early success.

All right, let’s stay focused I was saying : I was afraid that we might miss something important by dint of tackling the problem by a narrow view of things???????

5) Maxwell.

with the development of e-commerce, shopaholics don’t need any more to elbow they way through the store shelves they can indulge in their passion.24x7 a week, within the bounds of their income.

II) Translate into French : (sequel to the preceding translation.)
I looked at him. I thought : Why did you make and keep an album full of photographs of my mother ? Why ? And how did I know then aged nearly thirteen, that darkening summer evening, that Donald had been in love with my mother ? What made me sense that ? How do children intuit these things ? I had divine something : I possessed my first adult secret. I nourished it and let it grow inside me, warm and exquisite.

Hello Here4U

As usual it is a real pleasure to do your exercises.
Here is the first part of my work

IN PROGRESS

I) Translate into French: (sequel to the preceding translation.)

Hello
READY TO BE CORRECTED
Thanks a lot Here4U with this great exercise. Here's my try :

I) Translate into English:
Not all his proposals will be accepted, so there's no point in bending over backwards to help him out. You're only annoying him...

Let's hope this is only a red flag and that she'll make the necessary changes in her life.

I want you to keep a close eye on her and find out who she's partnering with : which tasks she's keeping for herself, and which ones she's delegating... Ambition has a strange effect on people, especially when they've quickly become successful.

Let's get back to business : I was saying that I was afraid we might be missing a big point by continually approaching problems short-sightedly.

5) Maxwell.
With the development of online business, shopaholics no longer need to elbow their way through the crowd to store shelves. And what's more, they can give in to their passion 24/7, within their budget limitations of course...

II) Translate into French: (sequel to the preceding translation.)
I looked at him. I thought : Why did you make and keep an album full of photographs of my mother ? Why ? And how did I know then, aged nearly thirteen, that darkening summer evening, that Donald had been in love with my mother ? What made me sense that ? How do children intuit these things ? William BOYD

III) Playing with words :

I) Translate into English:
Not all his proposals will be accepted, then it's no point going to great length to do him a favor. You'll only
get him angry!

Let's hope it's only a warning signal and that she will make the required changes in her lfe.

I want you to keep an eye on her in order to find out whom she is associated with: which shores she wants to keep
for herself and which ones she wants to be devolved? Ambition has an uncanny impact on individuals, so much so as
they have succeeded rapidly.

issues by the wrong end of the telescope.

With the upgrowth of on-line trade, the shopping addicts no longer need to elbow their way along the store shelves.
And they can indulge in their hobby 24h/24 7j/7, within the limits of their budget of course.

This guy seemed very BASHFUL and BESIDES, he was unpleasant; It was BLATANT that he intended to BRIBE me,NEVERTHELESS, I managed to put him OFF-BALANCE when I told him that if he were to overstep the BOUNDARY of decency, I will be dragooned into resorting
to force and that it will BRIDGE the gap between us!!

William Boyd – The New Confession

me fis comprendre ?

III) Playing and working with words:
(To) BRIBE – (To) BRIDGE – NEVERTHELESS – BESIDES – BALANCE – BOUNDARY – BASHFUL – BLATANT – emploi d’un adjectif composé.

BRIBED by fake intelligence, Napoleon stayed in Marengo , BESIDES sent Desaix division to hamper the supposed enemy retreat, but a sudden BLATANT cannonade threw him off BALANCE: from the BOUNDARY of enemy front, through an overnight BRIDGED floating bridge across the Bormida, columns of SO-CALLED white jacket were pressing the outnumbered French, who, NEVERTHELESS, held on; indeed Melas wasn’t so BASHFUL as Bonaparte believed. 64

Sorry for having overcome the 50 words‘ limit, but I couldn’t do otherwise. Don’t send me to the stake, please.
I thank you for the great exercise and I wish you a pleasant week.
So long.

Hi Here4u,

I -Into English :
1 – His suggestions won’t be accepted so you need not bend over backwards to help him. You’ll get on his nerves that’s all.
2 – Let’s hope it’s only an alarm and that she will alter her life for the better
3 – I want you to keep an eye on her to discover whom she is joining with : which responsibility she is keeping for herself and which one she is delegating.. Ambition has a strange effect on people particularly when they succeed quickly
4 – Let’ get back on track : I was saying that I feared we could miss something important if we keep on taking a narrow view on things
5 – With the e-commerce booming the shopaholics don’t need any longer to elbow their way through the departments in a store, they can devote themselves to their passion 24 hours a day within their means of course…

II – Into French
I looked at him. I thought : Why did you make and keep and album full of photographs of my mother ? Why ? And how did I know then aged nearly thirteen, that darkening summer evening, that Donald had been in love with my mother ? What made me sense that ? How did children intuit these things ? I have no idea. But I remind you I was no ordinary child. Already in those days my mind was working in distinctly personal ways. I cannot explain, though why this conclusion presented itself to me with such particular force, but as I flicked through the pages, contemplating this pretty young stranger who had given birth to me the day she died, I felt myself brimful of a new liberating secret. I nourished it and let it grow inside me, warm and exquisite.

III –
He seemed a bashful player who wanted to score a boundary so he had bribed the slow-minded ref ; besides he was a blatant liar and nevertheless he lost his balance and fell down without bridging the gap between himself and the best players.

Hard as usual...Did my best..

Hello, All of You!

VERY DIFFICULT !:?
BESIDES this BASHFUL young man, the Mexican BOUNDARY's guard stood here, always ready to be BRIBED by the first one who wanted to BRIDGE relationships with his own family who lived on the other side ; How difficult, NEVERTHELESS to find a good BALANCE between the honesty and a BLATANT act of corruption !52

Hello! Dear friends, and faithful hardworkers,

Here are my suggestions for the exercices you’ve bravely worked on, and very successfully, as ever.
Please receive my thanks and congratulations for your faithful, and constantly thorough work. Some write to me that they’re giving me « their best » and I do believe that you really all are. Thank you for this prolonged effort and your regularity.

I) Translate into English:
Not all his suggestions will be accepted, therefore, it’s no use bending over backwards in order to help him. You only manage to get on his nerves !

- il ne sert à rien = it’s no use + V + -ing.
- « mettre en quatre »= bend over backwards/ go out of your way/ go the extra mile/ put yourself out
- « rendre service » = to be helpful/ to help out/ to DO someone a favour/ to give someone a hand
- « énerver quelqu’un » = to get on someone’s nerves/ to irritate someone/ to annoy someone.

Hopefully, this will only be a wake up call and she’ll make, in her life, the changes that need to be made.

-« espérons= Let’s hope/ hopefully/
- un signal d’alarme = an alarm signal/ a warning signal/ a wake-up call/
- faire un changement = to MAKE a change
- changements nécessaires = changement qui ont besoin d’être faits => « changes that need to be made. »

I want you to keep a close eye on her and find out who she associates with, what tasks she keeps for herself and which ones she delegates… Ambition does strange things to people, especially when they had a quick success…

- surveiller = to watch/ ici, to keep a close eye on her/ to spy on someone (plus péjoratif)
=> « she keeps for heself »
« L’ambition » = L’ambition en général => pas de déterminant.

Let’s get back to business: I said I feared we might miss out on something important by tackling the problem from the wrong perspective.
- « revenons à nos moutons » = let’s get back to the topic in hand/ let’s get back to business/
- « je crains que… » = I fear + auxiliaire modal (le plus souvent « might »)
- passer à côté de qch= miss out on [sth] / to miss
- « à force de » = by + V + ing
- aborder un problème par le petit bout de la lorgnette = approach a problem short-sightedly/ look at a problem from too narrow a perspective/ from a narrow perspective/ this issue is never addressed, never raised/ to tackle a problem/

5) Maxwell.
With the development of e-commerce, shopping addicts don’t need to elbow their way through the departments of the stores and they may indulge in their passion 24/7 within their budget, of course.

- « the development of e-commerce » : le commerce en ligne en général => pas de déterminant.
- les accros au shopping = shopping addicts/ shopaholics/
- jouer des coudes = jostle for position/ elbow their way through/ fight their way through/ devote yourself to [sth]/ dedicate yourself to [sth] / indulge in the pleasures of [sth]
- s’adonner à leur passion = give yourself over to [sth]/ give yourself up to [sth]
- dans la limite de : within the limits of/ within

II) Translate into French: (sequel to the preceding translation.)
I looked at him. I thought: Why did you make and keep an albumfull of photographs of my mother? Why? And how did I know then aged nearly thirteen, that darkening summer evening, that Donald had been in love with my mother? What made me sense that? How do children intuit these things? I have no idea. But I remind you I was no ordinary child. Already in those days my mind was working in distinctly personal ways. I cannot explain, though, why this conclusion presented itself to me with such particular force(4), but as I flicked through the pages, contemplating this pretty young stranger who had given birth to me the day she died, I felt myself brimful of a new liberating certainty. I had devined something; I possessed my first adult secret. I nourished it and let it grow inside me, warm and exquisite.
William BOYD, The New Confessions.

(2) "compris-je/sus-je/" => ai-je compris ...
- to flick through/ to flip through = feuilleter, parcourir les pages de …
- to intuit= racine de => intuition.
(4) "presented itself with particular force"=> = s'imposer à quelqu'un.

III) Playing and working with words:
Using THE 8 WORDS given below (- the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses (or forms) you fancy-, 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words; (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.

- NEVERTHELESS, I couldn't enroll successfully, so I tried to BRIBE my way in, by BRIDGING the gap between the principal's TWO-FACED daughter and me; BESIDES, my BALANCE was nothing to be BASHFUL about, and although my move wasn't that BLATANT, I still failed; goodbye, new BOUNDARY ! (47)

- Indeed I'm BLASHFUL about his BRIBING this NARROW-MINDED judge; BESIDES, he's a BLATANT liar who lost his BALANCE, but love has no BOUNDARY and our differences can NEVERTHELESS be BRIDGED! (33)

- That young woman really wanted TO BRIBE the BASHFUL policeman, NEVERTHELESS he BRIDGED her BLATANT behaviour, reaching the BOUNDARY of a well-MANNERED young lady, who BESIDES was impudent, by finding the BALANCE concerning their argument. (37)

- This guy seemed very BASHFUL and BESIDES, he was unpleasant; it was BLATANT that he intended to BRIBE me, NEVERTHELESS I managed to put him OFF-BALANCE when I told him that if he were to overstep the BOUNDARY of decency, I would be dragooned into resorting to force and that it would BRIDGE the gap between us! (58)

- It’s BLATANT, this NICE-TEMPERED man has NEVERTHELESS crossed the BOUNDARY of honesty, by wanting to BRIBE a BASHFUL employee to BRIDGE his expenses which were BESIDES the budget in BALANCE. (31)

- I BRIDGE the differences of my motor and hearing DISABILITIES: it’s BLATANT whatever I do, wherever I am, I lose my BALANCE… I don’t care ABOUT wicked and plain stupid people; NEVERTHELESS I am BASHFUL when reaching the BOUNDARIES of my possibilities… BESIDES all that, I feel happy to be ALIVE… nobody can BRIBE me because I am a FREE-THINKING incorruptible woman. (65)

- BRIBED by fake intelligence, Napoleon stayed in Marengo, BESIDES sending Desaix’s division to hamper the supposed enemy retreat, but a sudden BLATANT cannonade threw him off BALANCE: from the BOUNDARY of the enemy front, through an overnight BRIDGED floating bridge across the Bormida, columns of SO-CALLED white jackets were pressing the outnumbered French, who, NEVERTHELESS, held on; indeed Melas wasn’t so BASHFUL as Bonaparte believed. (64) Reference: The Battle of Marengo on June 14, 1800 – antemeridian phase.

- He seemed a bashful player who wanted to score a boundary so he had bribed the slow-minded ref ; besides he was a blatant liar and nevertheless he lost his balance and fell down without bridging the gap between himself and the best players. (44)

- If you want to BRIDGE and reduce BLATANT gaps between incomes of men and women and NEVERTHELESS maintain a necessary BALANCE, you should take into consideration that some BADLY-BEHAVING people try TO BRIBE politicians and BESIDES know the BOUNDARY between honesty and corruption is very BASHFUL, (46)

- BESIDES this BASHFUL young man, the Mexican BOUNDARY guard stood there, always ready to be BRIBED by the first one who wanted to BRIDGE relationships with his own family who lived on the other side; how difficult, NEVERTHELESS to find a good BALANCE between honesty and a BLATANT act of corruption! (51)

Thanks to all of You for working so much and so well on this extremely difficult exercice. The results are sometimes a little "far-fetched" , but always very original, varied and educational..., quite exceptional, as a whole. Thanks and Congrats for this performance! You ARE GREAT!

Please, excuse any possibly remaining typo...
