Ex 110/ Another one for you
Bon courage à vous with THE FORCE, as ever !

Enjoy !

I) Translate into English:

Maxwell !

II) Translate into French : = the last sequel to the preceding texts.
« The realization allowed me to cope with my father’s strange coldness towards me of which I became more aware as I grew older. Since my discovery of Donald’s love for my mother, other complications had suggested themselves to me that made my father’s ire and hostility more comprehensible. What if Donald’s love had been reciprocated ? In terms of attractiveness there was no comparison between the two men. I hugged my secret to me like a hot water bottle. It protected me; it set a distance between me and my father. Donald and my mother. It seemed entirely natural and likely.
Fancifully, I contemplated my face in the mirror. My mother’s eyes, her brows. In the looking glass I think I began to see traces of Donald’s high forehead. I stretched my neck and swallowed trying to make my Adam’s apple bob like his. Could there have been something more?»
William BOYD, The New Confessions

III) Playing and working with words:
Using THE 8 WORDS given below ( - the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses (or forms) you fancy-, 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words; you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
(You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!)
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :

To CRINGE - to CLENCH - CASUAL - CROWDY – CALAMITY - CLOWN – WHEREAS - EVER - une forme passive
Allez ! Bonne réflexion ! The FORCE is with you!

Hello , it's been a while !

READY FOR CORRECTION

I) Translate into English:

No sum of money in the world would be sufficient to make the cliff where I’m standing less terrifying …

"Welcome back ! However I’m running out of time : tomorrow in the same time, I’ll be far away … " " It’s frightening me to learn new things about you ! " " You’re telling me ! "

Why do I feel that you want me to help you to fill the void between the two of you… Not a day goes by without me thinking of you should have talked to each other when you had the chance.

He can’t put up with when you put a date off. At least, you know what to expect. So, if you sense a risk of misconduct, warn us and we’ll arbitrate it.

He’s pretty special, I agree… sometimes by looking down on people, even laughing in their faces. But we cannot stop here, in fact he is much better after knowing him : he never turns away from his family and friends.

II) Translate into French :

« The realization allowed me to cope with my father’s strange coldness towards me of which I became more aware as I grew older. Since my discovery of Donald’s love for my mother, other complications had suggested themselves to me that made my father’s ire and hostility more comprehensible. William BOYD, The New Confessions

Hi Here4u,

I - Into English
1 – All the money in the world would not make the cliff I’m standing on less scaring
2 – ‘Nice to meet you but I’ve not much time left : tomorrow same time I’ll be far away” “I’m afraid of hearing new facts about you" “You bet..!”
3 – Why do I have the feeling that you want me to help you to fill the gap between you two… Not a day without my thinking you should have talked to each other when you still were able to.
4 – He doesn’t stand your changing the date. At least, you know what you’re getting. So if you suspect a risk of a blunder, let us know and we’ll decide.
5 – I must admit he is a bit peculiar looking down on people or even laughing in their faces ; but you must look beyond : basically he improves on acquaintance, he never turns his back on his family or his friends

II – Into French
The realization allowed me to cope with my father’s strange coldness towards me of which I became more aware as I grew older. Since my discovery of Donald’s love for my mother other complications had suggested themselves to me that made my father’s ire and hostility more comprehensible. What if Donald’s love had been reciprocated ? In terms of attractiveness there was no comparison between the two men. I hugged my secret to me like a hot water bottle. It protected me ; it set a distance between me and my father. Could there have been something more ?

III –
The old CLOWN stood in the center of the CROWDED ring and for a CASUAL eye, this sight could make you CRINGE, he looked more desperate than EVER and WHEREAS the band began to play he cried, the anxiety HAD CLENCHED his heart ; what a CALAMITY !

I hurry before leaving again...(lucky me.. but I'll still make the homework..) - Wish you a nice summer (not too many worries..)
(Like Maxwell I think that 'Our story n° 10' is a bit shaky.. difficult to tie with it ... I'll try..) - Love

Hello, Dear You All !

William BOYD, The New Confessions

III) Playing and working with words:
First of all, I have found nowhere "crowdy", I did as it was " crowded " in place of.

To enter the big top so CROWDY that people CLENCHED each other was a real CALAMITY; WHEREAS an old CLOWN arrived on the ring and to see his face and CASUAL attitude, I was taken irresistibly into a laugh, as EVER.." I saw my neighbour CRINGING !46

Always a very difficult exercise... but I have tried.

Good morning, dear here4u
Here is my try, ready to be corrected

I) Translate into English:
All the money in the world would make the cliff where I keep myself clung, less scary.

“Happy to see you again but I have not enough time left : tomorrow this time I’m going to leave and far away…..” “It makes me afraid of learning new facts about you” “That’s for sure”

Why do I feel in my bones that you want me to help you fill the gap between you two…Not a day goes by, without I think you should have talked to each other when
you could still do it.

I cannot stand at your shifting the date. At least you know what to expect. So if you forebode a risk of slippage, point it out and it will resort to an arbitration.

amis.
He looks a bit peculiar, I get along with you……sometimes being arrogant, even laugh in people’s face. But we mustn’t stop at that, he has all to gain from being well known: he never turns his back on his family or his friends as well.

Il me protégeait.

III) Playing and working with words:
To CRINGE - to CLENCH - CASUAL - CROWDY – CALAMITY - CLOWN – WHEREAS - EVER - une forme passive
The CLOWNS of “ Small Folk”, Robert The Bruce’s CASUAL and worst armed corps had their CROWDY, then WERE ORDERED to stay CRINGED beyond the slope, tying banners to their poles; when Bruce had pushed back the battered English
against the Bannock Burn, they were called forward, and WHEREAS they looked like very men-at-arms , CLENCHING their poles , Richard II’s army collapsed; Bannockburn was the worst military CALAMITY that had EVER hit an English army. 72
Reference: The Battle of Bannockburn – June 24,1314 – Second Day – Decisive Phase.

Dear here4u, I'm perfectly aware of being out of the contest, because of my exceeding the limit of the words. Nonetheless I do think I brought up something of interesting and little known, in the field of history, nowadays so neglected.
“Happy “for having scratched my mind an thanking you for your usual great work,
I hope you have a great week.
So long

Good evening here4u, Lucile, Maxwell, good evening to all !
I hope that you will not too disappointed by my work of translate. I tried. I like learning English !
I finished
1) translate into English
1- All the money of the world wouldn't return no less frightening the cliff where I'm standing...

2- Happy to see you again, but there's not much time left for me : tomorrow at the same time, I shall be left and far..." that frightens me to learn new things your subject !" " To whom do you tell it ?"

3- why have I the impression that you want that I help you to fill the void between you both... No day spends without I think that you should have spoken to each other when you still could.

4-Maxwell : he can't stand when you move the date. At least, you know what to do with it. So if you suspect a risk of slippage, warn and arbitrate.

5- Maxwell : He is a bit special, I grant it to you... to take sometimes the people high, even to their laughter in the nose and bear. But we must not stop at that : in the end, he wins to be known : he never turns back on his family or on his friends.

II) Translate into French :

Here is my 110, done on computer (in Reims).

Traduction

Than EVER, the circus was CROWDY (crowded) of people looking at the timer, in clown outfit who looked a CASUAL glance at the lion before CLENCHING his whip, without CRINGING of terror, WHEREAS he was attacked by the big cat called CALAMITY (40)

I) Translate into English:
No amount of money can make this cliff on which I'm standing less terrifying...

Nice to see you again, but I don't have a lot of time. Tomorrow at this time I will be long gone.... It frightens me to learn new things about you! Well, let's hear it.

Why do I have the impression that you want me to help you fill the gulf between you two. Not one day goes by without my thinking that you should have spoken to one another while you still could.

He can't stand when you move the date. At least you know where you stand with him. So, if you foresee a chance of misconduct, let me know and we'll arbitrate.

He's a bit special, I agree, looking down on people even laughing in their faces. But you can't stop there. Deep down, he is worth knowing. He never turns his back on family and friends.

Bonne journée et merci d'avoir amélioré mon vocabulaire.

I'm doing my best to keep to my schedule.
All of you (but porkchops! ) should have received your corrections by now... If not, please, DO protest quickly...

Hello Dears,

I) Translate into English:
All the money in the world wouldn't make the cliff I'm standing on less scary.

Alors COOL ! On y regarde de près !
- effrayant = frightening/ dreadful/ scary/ terrifying/ horrifying// appalling/ awful/ nightmarish/ dreadful
- the cliff I’m standing on = « the cliff (that) I’m standing on » où « that » = 0 ; Attention !

« Welcome back, but you know, I'm running out of time. This time tomorrow, I’ll be gone and far away... It makes me anxious to find out new things about you... » «Tell me about it! »

- Demain à la même heure = this time tomorrow
- il me reste peu de temps = I have little time left/ I’m running out of time
- « I’ll be gone and far away »= ici, j’ai employé le même auxiliaire. To be gone = être absent. To be far away= être loin.
- A qui le dis-tu ?! = Tell me about it!/ You don’t say !/ « You’re telling me ! »

Why do I get the feeling that you want me to help you bridge the gap/ the gulf/ between the two of you? Not a day goes by when I don’t think you should have spoken to each other when you still could.

- Combler le vide = fill the emptiness/ fill the void/the gap/ the gulf/
- vous deux = the two of you
- « pas un jour ne passe » = Ici, la négation doit porter sur le nom => « not a day goes by ».

He can’t bear your postponing the date/the deadline. At least, you know where you stand. Therefore if you foresee/sense a risk of a misconduct, just warn us and we’ll arbitrate.

- Il ne supporte pas = He can’t bear/ he can’t stand + V + ING./ he can’t put up with + gérondif.
He can’t stand me doing… / him doing. He can’t stand my doing/ his doing …
- Décaler la date = To postpone the dates/ to put back the dates// the deadline = date limite./ to delay/
- S’en tenir à = To stick to one’s gun /to hold the line/ you know where to stand/ you know what to expect
- un risque de = a risk of = a chance of (attention "a chance" n'est pas toujours positif! )

He may be a little odd, I grant you that… looking down on people, even laughing in their faces, but you shouldn’t focus on this: basically, he's worth knowing: he never turns his back on family or friends.

- décaler les dates = to postpone the date/ to put back the dates/ to delay something/
- je te l’accorde = I’ll give you that/ I grant you that/
- être spécial = to be odd/ different/ special/ unusual/ peculiar/
- prendre de haut = mépriser = to look down on/ to despise/ to scorn/ look down someone’s nose/
- rire au nez de = To laugh in someone’s face/ in the face of someone
- s’arrêter à = to focus on/ to be caught in/
- dans le fond = basically/ fundamentally/ finally/
- gagner à être connu = to be worth knowing/ to deserve to be known/ to merit publicity

I’ve been taught this word (or so I think… ) heard it and must have used it everywhere in GB and the USA with careful natives ( in exams, I suppose…) and nobody ever corrected me! (a proof, if necessary, that you can use bad language and never be corrected) … Certainly because of the noun « crowdy » used in North England where I was trained… Sorry for what wasn’t « correct academic English …" unless you interpreted it as it’s used in the North and then had to face many more difficulties to integrate it naturally in a sentence …
Super Extra congratulations to those of you who chose to do that !
If this were to happen again, please, do not hesitate to write an mp and tell me. I promise I’ll answer and tell you what word to work with.
