Analysis /oeuvre d'art
Message de desdehace posté le 19-04-2012 à 16:00:22 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,

Voici une analyse d'oeuvre en anglais que je dois rendre bientôt … Ainsi, je vous remercie d'avance si vous pouviez corriger mes erreurs.
Merci beaucoup,
Desdehace

I. Presentation of the document
This painting, entitled “Metamorphosis of Narcissus “ was painted by Salvador Dali, a major artist of surrealism. This masterpiece is an oil-on-canvas, and is currently exhibited at the Tate Gallery in London. This picture, painted during the Spanish Civil War deals as the name suggests with the myth of Narcissus.
This work of art masterfully composed uses the meticulous technique of double images. Therefore, the realization of Dali is established in two parts; a balance which rhythms the composition.
II. Description
Let's start with the left side of the painting. In the foreground of this one, we can an androgynous figure curled up on itself. This figure is slightly worrying because his face is empty : the absence of nose, mouth ... is obvious. It seems stiff like a statue, however, its hair is waving in the air. The latter seems to look his own reflection in a lake, an interesting feature that recalls the legend of Narcissus. Moreover, it is immersed in dark water and its posture is fetal.

Let's continue with the right side of the painting. In the foreground of this one, a hand painted in cold and dull colors is standing on a dark ground. This hand was painted with precision, the phalanxes are protruding and the fingers are well proportioned. We can observe that the thumbnail is broken and that ants walk on it. A contrast is created between the immobility of the hand and the movement of ants. This hand grasps an egg between his thumb and forefinger. This egg is cracked, and he springs a flower like a daffodil. Between these two fingers, a snake is escaping.

The background of this work is rich. This one is dominated by huge cliffs and an orange plain. In addition, a blue sky dotted with thick dark stormy clouds overcomes this setting.
A set of characters in the center of the picture are dancing, this create an atmosphere of fun that contrasts with the immobility of the two main figures. A winding path begins at the height of the dancers and disappears into the horizon.
We see to the right of the dancers, a chess board on which a statue stands on a pedestal.
Finally, two things are disturbing: a dark and intriguing cave at the foot of the cliffs and a dog devouring a carcass.

At the first sight of this work, the eye is first attracted by the warm and golden light colors, focused around the character already stiff (only the hair is still in motion) and then by his double in the vertical axis of symmetry .
The optical illusion created by Dali is a masterpiece of precision, the motionless body merges with the hand because their forms, location, and the postures are similar. This perspective therefore generates a duplication of two similar images that overlap to form a single image.
However, some differences are worth noting. The character in front of the water is painted in natural tones of a human body while the colors of the hand are dark or sinister. Moreover, the character based on water while the hand on the earth. There is a contrast between the ground and water.
III. Analysis
Before analyzing this work, be warned it is inspired by the Greek myth of Narcissus. Narcissus was a handsome young man. This one, saw his own reflection in the lake water and fell in love with his own beauty. To better see, Narcissus looks more and more towards the lake. Then he fell into the water and drowned. It is said that near the banks of the lake grew a flower, which was named Narcissus, in honor of Narcissus.

The figure on the left seems to be Narcissus because he observes his own reflection in the water. This character is anonymous as if he could be anyone of us.
Narcissus symbolizes man's ego. The latter is stiff, he seems dead. Dali wanted to convey the idea that each man is focused on himself and that such an attitude can only lead to death.
On the right, the hand seems to free Narcissus of his pride. It is his reborn , he springs from an egg into an immaculate flower, a narcissus, symbol of purity. This egg also springs the demonic part of the old Narcissus as a snake. The snake symbolizes evil that remains in a creation. Its presence recalls the passage of Adam and Eve from the Bible .

Moreover, looking at the key elements, we have the impression of scanning scan both sides of the human mind, the conscious and the unconscious. The conscious is stiff while the unconscious creates, symbolized by the birth of the flower. With this work, Dali mirrored by the water, "two states, apparently so contradictory, that are the dream and reality," the conscious and the unconscious.

Metamorphosis of Narcissus is a painting inspired by a poem written by Dali that we should read before contemplating his work. The end of the poem says: "When this head will explode It will be the flower The new Narcissus, Gala, My Narcissus.". Dali tells us that his meeting with Gala, led him to become better, to be reborn.

To conclude, Dali thanks to an indisputable mastery technique, has managed to unite the Greek mythological addressing the myth of Narcissus to psychoanalysis by transcribing in this painting identity and existential problems. The oversized ego, narcissism are problems of the soul that externalize Dali by painting. His work does not leave us indifferent, he urges us to reflect on our attitude and behavior. Don't we have in each of us a share of Narcissus?
