ceci est ma notion Lieux et formes du pouvoir. J'aimerais avoir des avis, des conseils et éventuellement des corrections si possible.

In order to begin my presentation about places and forms of power, it will be necessary for me to define what does power mean. In the Oxford dictionary, power refers to the ability to influence the behavior of others. As a consequence, power implies a division between those who have power and exercice it, and those who have none or little of it. But even when authority seems absolute, there are always counter-powers which question it, and resist it.

One question arises: Has power been equally distributed among society over the centuries ? For sure, we now live in a democracy, which means that power has to be evenly shared by all citizens, but however, we can definitely say that there is still some people who rule over others.

I) The Victorian age began in the 1850’s, where society was far from being equal. There was a huge gap between the working class who lived in dreadful conditions, and the upper class where people had all the goods, wealth and power. Only a small handful of men, achieved to rule over the entire nation.

But even within the upper class, power was not equally shared. Women and children had no rights to debate. For example women were not freely offered the opportunity to study. And as for children, they were strictly brought up and they had no rights to share their point of view.

In Hard Times, a novel written in 1954, Charles Dickens narrates the story of Louisa, the daughter of an aristocrat. The father wanted her daughter to marry his friend. Louisa who had received a strict education, couldn’t rebel against his father, even if she was reluctant about this marriage. But his father believed that an arranged marriage with a man from the same social class as his, was very appropriate.

But as the century wore on, working people who had no rights and voice in government, claimed political recognition. A huge movement emerged and the workers finally achieve to better their conditions. A more equal sharing of power was finally putting in place.

II) We can also see that, since the 20th century, children have more and more asserted their decision and power. In an article published in the Guardian in 2014, entitled Class Prejudiced drove our family apart, John fell in love with Celia, a girl who came from a lower social class compared to him. The story took place in the 60’s, when John’s parents disapproved their relationship. John who really loved Celia, had no choice but to cut all the ties with his parents, so he can marry her. He definitely questioned his parent’s authority by making his own decision and moving forward.

We can definitely see that, compared to Louisa, who had her destiny imposed, young people in the 20th could decide by their own and be free.

III) However, power is still not fairly distributed at all. There is still so much discrimination and domination of some people over others, even at school. A recent article published in the guardian, entitled School should be a safe, nurturing place-not a daily nightmare shows that because there is more things to have in our consumer society, children who couldn’t get the new generation smartphone, or branded clothes, were made fun at by those who can get all the goods they want.
This article also shows that the wealthiest people tend to form a strong and powerful group, that rules over the underprivileged ones.

To conclude, we can say that even in the 21th century, money is still a source of distinction but overall a source of disparity, just like during the victorian society.
It reminds me of the movie Suicide Room .The film centers around Dominik, a sensitive and lost teenager, the son of wealthy minister. After a series of humiliating events, his classmates accuse him of homosexuality and mock him on social networking sites. Dominik, humiliated, refuses to go to school. Falling into a deep depression, Dominik secludes himself in his room. Over time, Dominik loses contact with the real world, becoming more engrossed in a virtual world. This movie made me think on the theme of acts of wickedness and its consequences, and also the theme of suicide.
However, I think that nowadays the phenomena of submission is less intense compared to before. Indeed, there is a progress in the wish to make a fair society and let people be who they really are. Many organisations, songs, books are aimed at helping those children.

hello missalice! Voici quelques fautes à corriger
Ligne 1-- La question "What does power mean ?" apparait au style indirect ,donc il faut transformer la question ,en enlevant l'auxiliaire et en conjuguant "mean"à là 3ème personne du singulier au present .
-- "people" est un mot pluriel
--dans la partie I , dans le premier paragraphe ,oubli de "people" après "working class"
-- ° ° ° ° dans le troisième paragraphe,"father" est un mot masculin, il vous faut donc corriger les adjectifs possessifs
--dans la partie II ,dans le dernier paragraphe,conjuguez le verbe "achieve" au simple past
vocabulaire,trouvez un autre verbe que "to come from" pour définir l'appartenance de Celia .

-- vérifiez la préposition qui suit "to approve"/"to disapprove"
-- "can" a une forme de remplacement pour le passé.
-- parents ,mot au pluriel , suivi de l'apostrophe.
--dans la partie III ,la phrase qui parle des possessions dans la société de consommation est maladroite.
° ° ° ° ,précisez ce que vous entendez par "before" (in the past?in the previous century?)
° ° ° ° ,twenty first[/bleu century,donc XXI st

Je ne m'étais pas rendu compte de toutes ces erreurs
j'ai encore une petite question, j'ai remplacé "Celia, a girl who came from a lower social class" par " who belongs to a lower social classe". Est-ce mieux ?

Hello missalice ! j'ai tardé à vous répondre , sorry ! Effectivement "Celia belongs to a lower social class" est une bonne expression .
Celia apaprtient-elle à la middle class ( upper middle class /lower middle class )ou à la working class ? ces notions sont (encore) importantes en GB .
