Oral/ Places and forms of power
Message de caminataure posté le 14-05-2015 à 16:11:24 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,
je suis en Terminale L et je prépare mes oraux blancs qui ont lieu lundi.
Pourriez-vous me dire quelles sont mes fautes s'il vous plait ?

Merci d'avance.I will speak about the notion of locations and forms of power by studiying this problem : the question of the selection in the Anglo-saxon countries and the role of higher education. According to the dictionary definition, a location is a part of the space well defined, a place which has a clear role, as for exemple : workplace, public place, den of iniquity... A form, from a political point of view, is a the characteristic of a State, a Government. The power, also from a political point of view, is the authority of the State or the ability or official capacity to exercice control or authority over others. It’s either the source of the political integration, or revealing of tensions and conflicts inside a group. According to the sociologist Max Weber, is « the capacity to impose his will as part of a social relationship, whereas the possible resistances. » These three notions are connected. The power concern all the people. Here, I will develop the education in the English-speaking countries, and especially the universities and their access. Firstly, I will speak about the price of the universities. Subsequently, I will speak about the studen’ts debts. Finally, I will speak about the reasons which push a lot of students to do some studies, whereas the the high price.

In France, there are a lot of things which are made to allow to the greatest number to go to the university. The price are lower, even in the private universities they are reasonable, or there are some scholarships to help the students. In our country, we favor a lot the education. Nevertheless, this is not the case in all countries. The access to universites in the Anglo-Saxon countries, is regulated. It is very expensive to study there, the tuition fees are so much high. In december 2010, a law was adopted by Gouvernement aiming to increase the tuition fees from 3 290 to 9 000 dollars. This law aroused a lot of bad reactions, very negative. A great deal of students demonstrated, in the purpose to show their disagreement and their anger. We studied some of his demonstrations. On a video, taking from CNN Student News, we saw student protests which took place in London (at Parliament Square) the 9 december 2010. The correspondent for CNN, from London, speaks to an american’s public and he makes a comparison between the situation in the UK and the American situation. On the picture, we can see the students, who have some signs. We can see, for example : « Tape man hates cuts », « Coalition of resistance » or « There’s Some Things Money can’t buy… For education there’s Mastercard... » Even poorer students must be able to go to university, as in France. But, in the Anglo-Saxon countries, this is impossible, only rich students will be able to aff ord to go to university, you can be educated only if you are rich enough. This is revolting. Because of it, some students, wanting to succeed in their life, to get into debt for life.

Indeed, some students get into debt a lot to study. Barack Obama, for example, justs paid off the debts accumulated during his studies. In a videa taking from a report of PBS on the campus of the Boston’s university in 2008, we learn some testimonies very moving about some students who forced to get into debt a lot because they want to studies. For example, Ian Witherby, who will graduate from UMass Boston this spring with a degree in philosophy and at least $65,000 in federal and private loans. He says that it takes to him approximately 20 years to paid off all his debts. In front of this huge price, a lot of students work a lot, some of them accumulate several works. To finance their college education, students can also havea grant. There are a lot of grants : merit scholarship, athletic scholarship... We studied a character called Jojo Johanssen, the protagonist of the novel « I am Charlotte Simmons ». It’s a student at the Dupont University. He got a grant because he is a sportsman and he has a high level and he plays in the team of the university.

Even if the price is very high, there are a lot of students who decide to go to university and to work out, they have differents work next to the studies, to do their best wrestling, in the purpose to have a chance to succeed in their life, to have a job they like... We can wonder why they spend so much monney ? Is it just to have a good job ? Or to fit into the society to take their place as a citizen? To study for their self-fulfillment and to widen their culture ? We studied an extract from the book Middlesex written by Jeffrey Eugenides.
Written as some reports, Middlesex tells the story of Calliope Stephanides, who discovers, at 14 years old, that she is a boy. Cal speaks about this transformation. In this extrat, she evokes Chapter Eleven, nickname given to her brother, and his attitude towards the studies. He has change so much, physically and psychologicaly, and also in his tastes, when he came to university. For the parents, the purpose of university is to enable their son to get a good job (becoming an engineer), equip Chapter Eleven to earn a living. So it is a utilitarian purpose. But, for Chapter Eleven, it is to assert his personalityblossom, following fulfi lling courses. So it is pure learning for its own sake... The studies can create some disagreements between the parents and the children. The teenagers can be contrary to do some studies because they think that it’s boring and they don’t want to pass all their time sitting in classroom. Nevertheless, at the university, they can meet new people and come across new ways of thinking, enrich their culture, learn about other cultures... Universities can transmit a common culture and common standards of citizenship, contribute to economic growth, extend and deepen human understanding, teach diff erent skills... So, even if the price is very high the studies stay very important for most of the students.

To conclude, we can say that there are a lot of differences between the universities in France and in the Anglo-Saxon countries. The price is the first difference. In the Anglo-Saxon countries, it’s very high. This is so shocking and this push the students to get into debt until 10 or 20 years after gradution. Despite this price et the debts, there are a lot of students who don’t esitate to do some long studies, in the purpose to have a good job. They chain the works, they accumulate them, to pay the big fees. The State must find a solution and must act to settle this problem. He must fall the fees and the price to allow the education for everybody, as in our country. Because everybody need to be able to go at school and to have a job.
