Ex 114/ going, going
Message de here4u posté le 13-08-2017 à 15:15:48 (S | E | F)
Hello, Dear Friends!
Voici votre exercice suivant …

I)Translate into English:
Maxwell!

II) Translate into French:
I was ten at the time she left, but I didn’t much mind. She and I had never got on, she was always on my back. I think my Dad was quite upset though. Anyway, we made the best of it, living out of tins mainly. We’d go and do a big shop at Tesco’s every Saturday morning and then in the afternoon we’d try and tidy up the place a bit. We had to make an effort though because a couple of times one of those bloody social workers showed up, poking her nose in where it wasn’t wanted. She started talking about « unhealthy environment », so afterwards we kept things a bit cleaner.
My Dad was a foreman in Belsen’s Brewery, so he was gone there every day. I was in school – when I went. Actually, I didn’t skip it too much ; I didn’t want the social worker back.
Andrea Lascelles, Best Mate, 1991

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
(You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!)
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
(to) DRIBBLE – (to) EAVESDROP – IRRESISTIBLE – LAZY – STEAMBOAT – WOLF – MEANWHILE – STILL + UN GERONDIF précédé d’un possessif (ex : my listening / her opening …) Enjoy !

IV) Student in Danger! SOS, student in need… is Number one on another thread of the site (« Help ! and Rack your brains 3 »).
Please, RUSH to help my poor Student… He needs it.

FINISHED
Hello everyone
Thanks a lot Here4U. I really loved this exercise, especially the excerpt from Best Mate, which made me smile Tidying up is a chore! It really is!

I)Translate into English:
Forgiving your brother was not easy, but when we love someone, we stand by him, for better or for worse.

This kind of will to succeed is what inspires him. His resume is impressive and if the boss thinks he'll be a valuable member in this team, then let's go!

I had thought I would give Tommy playtime after dinner, which hopefully would calm him down a little...

"You're not going to throw him into the deep end while he hasn't cut his teeth on this project yet, are you ?" "But yes, he will go to that meeting to present the schedule and what's left to do."

-He and I are done. He took me for granted, as if I belonged to him (*). Roughly "look pretty and shut up!" Now, I want to move on and forget him. - Don't worry, you'll get over him.
(*) or : as if I were his nice little puppy / as if I were not human at all.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
I didn't know this IRRESISTIBLE woman EAVESDROPPING on that luxurious STEAMBOAT was one of your agents : I was STILL having a LAZY lunch when I saw her : Please forgive MY DOING a WOLF-whistle and my DRIBBLING like a baby ; MEANWHILE, the other spies had already spotted her. (49)

Dear Here4U, thank you so much for your exercise 114 and your correction
READY TO BE CORRECTED
It is high time I sent my try. No matter how hard I tried to rack my brain, I am far from being certain of a good result.

Forgiving your brother was not that simple, however when we love someone, we will be staying by his side for better or for worse.

That kind of willingness to succeed is what inspires him. His CV is imposing and if the manager thinks he will be a member of merit within this team, so let’s do so!

I had thought, I would give Tommy a moment’s play after dinner which, hopefully, would calm him down for a while.

Honestly you are not going to throw him into the deep end, whereas he has not yet cut his teeth on a planning stage,?”, but of course, he will go quite well to the meeting in order to present the schedule and much remains to be done.

Maxwell!
It’s over between he and I He would take me for granted as his own thing By and large “Just shut up and be pretty «For the time being, I want to turn the page, and forget him. Don’t worry; you will get over it soon.

hello Here4U, hello everyone,
this is my homework I did with pleasure, as usual

I)Translate into English:
It was not simple to forgive your brother, but when you love someone, you stay by his side, for better or for worse.

This kind of will to succeed is what inspires him. His CV is impressive, and if the Boss thinks he will be a good team member, then, let's go !

I had thought I would let Tommy a time playing after dinner, that, with a bit of luck, could calm him down a little.

You are not going really to throw him in the deep end even though he has not cut his teeth on this project yet ?
Sure, yes, he will go to the meeting, to show the schedule and what it rest to do.

it's over between him and me. He considered me as his thing, as acquired. In short, "Just shut up and look pretty". Today, I want to make a fresh start and forget him.
Don't worry, you 'll get over.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

On the STEAMBOAT, everyone felt well, and enjoyed this LAZY afternoon in company of the IRRESISTIBLE captain, who looked like a WOLF, with his eyes so clear! but We knew MEANWHILE that Joan, her jealousy STILL present, continued to EAVESDROP her rival, whose the blood continued to DRIBBLE on the floor . 50

that is all for the first part, now I am going on " Help ! and Rack your brains 3"

This kind of will to succeed is what motivates him. His CV is impressive and if the boss thinks that he will be a much-valued member in this team, then, let's go!

I had thought I would let Tommy a little time for playing game after dinner, which, would hopefully calm him down a bit

"You're not going to get struck him in straight away, even though he has not still proved his ability to manage that project ?" - "surely, it will go to the meeting to display the schedule and the work remaining "

It's over between him and me. He regarded me as if I was acquired to him and his own thing. Basically, "Be beautiful and shut up ". Now I want to make a fresh start and forget it. - Do not be worried, you'll get over it.

II) Translate into French:
I was ten at the time she left, but I didn't much mind. She and I had never get on , she was always on my back. I think my Dad was quite upset though. Anyway, we made the best of it, living out of tins mainly. We'd go and do a big shop at Tesco's every Saturday morning and then in the afternoon we'd try and tidy up the place a bit. We had to make an effort though because a couple of times one of those bloody social workers showed up, poking her nose in where it wasn't wanted. She started talking about « unhealthy environment », so afterwards we kept things a bit cleaner.
My Dad was a foreman in Belsen's Brewery, so he was gone there every day. I was in school ? when I went. Actually, I didn't skip it too much ; I didn't want the social worker back.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
(to) DRIBBLE ? (to) EAVESDROP ? IRRESISTIBLE ? LAZY ? STEAMBOAT ? WOLF ? MEANWHILE ? STILL UN GERONDIF précédé d'un possessif (ex : my listening / her opening ?) Enjoy !

It was such a LAZY summer afternoon and the STEAMBOAT was sailing speedily on a STILL sea; I was alone inside my cabin, very worried, but my EAVESDROPPING reassured me as I heard an IRRESISTIBLE laughter coming from the passageway, MEANWHILE ,a WOLF -dog was playing and DRIBBLING with a ball for the pleasure of the crew.56 words

Dear Here4u , thank you for your exercise, which was always as excellent as the previous

Good morning dear here4u
Here is my try, ready to be corrected

Translate into English
It was not easy to forgive your brother, but when you love someone, you stay at/by his side, for better or for worse

What inspires him is such kind of willpower to succeed. . His curriculum vitae imposes respect and if the boss thinks that he will be a valuable member in this team, well then, let’s go!
I had thought that if I would leave Tommy a short break to play after dinner it could
be useful, with a bit of luck, to make him calm down for a little.

Aren’t you going to throw him into the deep end of the pool, even though he hasn’t yet cut his teeth with this project? If so, he will go to the meeting to produce the planning and everything else to do.

It’s over between him and I. He regarded me as a conquest, as a thing of his own.
Briefly, “Be beautiful and be silent”. Now I want to turn over a new leafand forget him. Don’t worry, you’ll recover.

Black clouds, running on the sea surface,
Were about to reach the coast,
A STEAMBOAT in the offing,
ITS DRIBBLING hull going up and down,
Was HOLDING the WOLF by the ears,
Facing the IRRESISTIBLE sea strength,
And MEANWHILE I was STILL standing at my window,
EAVESDROPPING through the shutters,
Beaten by the rain. 62

Thank heaven, the storm refreshed the air,
and my overheated brain,
making me able to carry out,
the tricky play,
without too much strain.

Thank you for the nice exercise, dear friend.
So long

Hi Here4u,

I – Into English

1 - Forgiving your brother was not that easy anyway when you love someone you stay by him for better or for worse
2 –He is inspired by a kind of willingness to succeed. His curriculum vitae is impressive and if the boss thinks he can be a valuable member in the team, well, let’s go
3 – I thought I could let Tommy play after dinner what, with a little chance, would calm him down a bit
4 – You’re not going to plunge him in the deep end when he has not yet cut his teeth on this project ? But, yes, he’ll go to the meeting to set out the planning and what is to be done.
5 – It’s all over between he and I. He thought I agreed with him, that I was his plaything. Roughly, just sit there and look pretty… Now I’d like to turn the page and forget him. ‘Don’t worry you’ll get over it !’

II – Into French

I was ten at the time she left, but I didn’t much mind. She and I had never got on, she was always on my back. I think my Dad was quite upset though. Anyway, we made the best of it, living out of tins mainly. We’d go and do a big shop at Tesco’s every Saturday morning and then in the afternoon we’d try and tidy up the place a bit. We had to make an effort though because a couple of times one of those bloody social workers showed up, poking her nose in where it wasn’t wanted. She started talking about ‘unhealthy environment’, so afterwards we kept things a bit cleaner. My Dad was a foreman in Belsen’s Brewery, so he was gone there every day. I was in school – when I went. Actually, I didn’t skip it too much ; I didn’t want the social worker back.

III –Playing with words

To my knowing the STEAMBOAT was to sail at 2, some LAZY girls were STILL lying on deck-chairs, MEANWHILE a man was EAVESDROPPING on their conversation, DRIBBLING like the WOLF in front of the Little Red Riding Hood, the show was IRRESISTIBLE !

Nobody seems very keen on working...So I'll try to kick-start the machine...
Hope you're alright and have enjoyed your holidays..

Hello here4u!
I've discovered your exercises 3 weeks ago, and I try to catch up on my lateness (I am currently at exercise 42), but I wanted to work at the same time as everybody else, so I came here !
Every exercise you published was very helpful to me, considering that next year, I'll have to practice Thème a lot.
Thank you for your impressive work

I)Translate into English:
It wasn't easy to forgive your brother, but when one loves somebody, one stays by their side, for better or worse.

That kind of will to succeed is what inspires him. His résumé is impressive, and if the boss thinks that he will be a valuable member in this team, then, let's go !

I had thought that I would leave Tommy a moment to play after dinner, which, with a bit of luck, would calm him down a bit.

« You're not going to throw him in the big bath whereas he isn't used to working on that project yet, are you ? » - « I am, he will go to the meeting and show the planning and the rest to be done. »

I have broken up with him. He considered me as his, as his thing. To sum up, « Be pretty and be quiet». Now, I want to start on a blank page and forget him. - Don't worry, you'll go through it.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
MEANWHILE, as we had EAVESDROPPED on the skipper who wondered outloud if his IRRESISTIBLE WOLF – who was STILL awake - would handle his being locked up in a cage, the STEAMBOAT kept on sliding on the river, its LAZY path forming a foamy trail on the water, as if it were DRIBBLING.

Hello, Dear Friends!

Allez ! C’est parti !

I) Translate into English:
Forgiving your brother hasn’t been easy, but when you love someone, you stick with them for better or for worse.

-« Forgiving your brother hasn’t been easy/ It hasn't been easy » insiste sur le résultat de l'action.
-To forgive someone = pardonner à quelqu'un

That kind of drive to succeed is what inspires him. His resumé is very impressive, and if the boss thinks that he'll be a worthwhile member to this team, then, let's do this.

-« Drive » = energy, willpower; « will » me gênait un peu. J’ai bien aimé : willingness/ou willpower.
-Curriculum vitae résumé
-to be impressed => it is impressive/ to inspire respect/ to be commanding/
-The manager = the boss (moins formel)
-a member to a team.

I thought I'd give Tommy some after dinner playtime, which would hopefully wind him down a bit...

-« un moment de jeu après le dîner »: j’ai eu envie d’en faire un « adjectif composé » = « some after dinner playtime »
- avec un peu de chance = with a little luck/ hopefully/
- calmer quelqu’un = to calm down/ to wind down = décompresser …

« Honestly, you’re not going to throw him in at the deep end when he hasn’t cut his teeth on the project yet, are you ? » « Oh yes ! I am ! He will attend the meeting and present the schedule and what is left to be done/ to do. »

- to plunge him in at the deep end/ = the deep end of the swimming pool as opposed to the « shallow end ».
- Le reste à faire = what is left to be done/ what is left to do/

« He and I are over. He used to take me for granted, as if I were his thing! Roughly speaking, «just shut up and look pretty». Now, I want to make a fresh start and forget about him.» «Don’t worry! You’ll get over him!»

- C'est fini entre X et Y ... X and Y are over/ are done/ "Toi et moi" = you and I / you and me (moins formel)/ He and I/ me are over/ done.
- Tourner la page = make a fresh start/ put behind me / draw a line under/ move on/
- S’en remettre = to get over someone/ something

Andrea Lascelles, Best Mate, 1991

Je vous attendais sur les « We’d go and do » et « we’d try and tidy ». Bravo !
En revanche, « to go and do » « try and tidy »= aller faire, essayer de nettoyer.
- To make the best of it= s’accommoder d’une situation/ faire au mieux/ se débrouiller/ on a fait contre mauvaise fortune, bon cœur/
- "She and I had never got on"= Elle et moi n’avions jamais accroché/ ne nous étions jamais entendues/
(3) «do a big shop at Tesco’s» : « faire les grosses courses » m’a semblé un peu maladroit.
(6) « unhealthy environment » = « environnement malsain » m’a gênée.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

- I didn't know that this IRRESISTIBLE woman EAVESDROPPING on that luxurious STEAMBOAT was one of your agents: I was STILL having a LAZY lunch when I saw her ; Please forgive my doing a WOLF-whistle and my DRIBBLING like a baby ; MEANWHILE, the other spies had already spotted her.( nombre de mots ???)

- From the deck of the STEAMBOAT, a LAZY landscape presented itself to us and STILL, MY HITTING ON neighbour, ??? with an IRRESISTIBLE smile, like a WOLF, was eating his rump steak with a DRIBBLE of gluttony ; MEANWHILE, patiently, I EAVESDROPPED all around.

- On the STEAMBOAT, everyone felt well, and enjoyed this LAZY afternoon in company of the IRRESISTIBLE captain, who looked like a WOLF, with such clear eyes ; MEANWHILE, we knew that Joan, who was STILL jealous, continued to EAVESDROP the words of her rival, whose blood continued to DRIBBLE on the floor . 51

- On a LAZY summer afternoon, the STEAMBOAT was sailing speedily on the STILL river; I was alone inside my cabin, very worried, but my EAVESDROPPING reassured me as I heard an IRRESISTIBLE laughter coming from the passageway ; MEANWHILE, a WOLF-dog was playing and DRIBBLING with a ball for the pleasure of the crew. 54

- The LAZY weather was giving place,
To an approaching storm:
Black clouds, running on the sea surface,
Were about to reach the coast,
A STEAMBOAT in the offing,
Its DRIBBLING hull going up and down,
Was HOLDING the WOLF by the ears,
Facing the IRRESISTIBLE sea strength,
And MEANWHILE I was STILL standing at my window,
EAVESDROPPING through the shutters,
Beaten by the rain. 62

-To my knowledge, the STEAMBOAT was to sail at 2, some LAZY girls were STILL lying on deck-chairs, MEANWHILE a man was EAVESDROPPING on their conversation, DRIBBLING like the WOLF in front of Little Red Riding Hood, the show was IRRESISTIBLE ! ( ???)

- During our travel by STEAMBOAT, our WOLF-dog seemed to be LAZY, and DRIBBLED, catching flies around him ; MEANWHILE my sister used to prick up her ears TO EAVESDROP: as she was jealous of her IRRESISTIBLE husband, she always imposed her rules, it was STILL HER STIFLING influence. 48

- I was listening to conversations, MEANWHILE my brother was washing up(.) I was EAVESDROPPING the music which was played on the terrace of the café, looking at the DRIBBLING fountain(.) In front of it, a STEAMBOAT was slipping like a LAZY (Lazy est un adjectif … pas un nom qui est nécessaire ensuite.) ??? on the water with a wonderful head of WOLF painted on the hull, creating an IRRESISBLE landscape ! - MEANWHILE, as we had EAVESDROPPED on the skipper who wondered outloud if his IRRESISTIBLE WOLF (= deux mots imposés consécutifs !) – who was STILL awake- would handle his being locked up in a cage, the STEAMBOAT kept on sliding on the river, its LAZY wake forming a foamy trail on the water, as if it were DRIBBLING.(??? )
