Ex 121/ enthusiastic as ever
Message de here4u posté le 30-11-2017 à 09:31:18 (S | E | F)
Dear Friends,
I know you're expecting your new brain-teaser... I hope it won't disappoint you.
It’s a and the correction will be online on Sunday December 17th. Difficult as ever… but I know you can do it. Congratulations for your enthusiasm and competence !

I)Translate into English:

Maxwell.

II) Translate into French : (sequel to the preceding translation).
«It seems silly to wait, doesn’t it? He might as well come now as later, get used to running sheep on the black soil plains, which I’m sure is quite different from sheep in New Zealand. Then when I’m gone he can step into my shoes without feeling the pinch.» Head lowered, she watched Father Ralph closely.
«I wonder you didn’t think of it earlier,» he said.
«Oh, I did. But until recently I thought the last thing I wanted was a lot of vultures waiting anxiously for me to breathe my last. Only lately, the day of my demise seems a lot closer than it used to, and I feel… oh, I don’t know… as if it might be nice to be surrounded by people of my own flesh and blood.»
«What’s the matter, do you think you’re ill?» he asked quickly, a real concern in his eyes.
She shrugged. «I’m perfectly alright…»
Coleen McCULLOUGH, The Thorn Birds.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy, but MUST remain verbs!), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words.
(You CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
(You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!)

FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
-(to) EAT – (to) OWE - FLAVOURED – DREAMY-(a) NIGHT -(a) COMMUTE - UNLESS – EVENTUALLY + un adjectif composé en –ed (ex : a long-haired man)

IV) Don’t forget to go and help my poor helpless student on the thread « Rack your brains and help/ 11 ». Thanks a lot!

May we have THE FORCE!

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

Take a terrible pounding
Thrashed/beaten hands down/ in straight sets by his lifelong rival, author of a perfect match, the finalist was awarded a silver plate, shedding a tear.

II) Translate into French : (sequel to the preceding translation).

Quickly trounced him in two sets by his lifelong opponent, doer of a perfect match, the finalist was given the silver platter, shedding a tear.

(50 words).

IV) Don’t forget to go and help my poor helpless student on the thread « Rack your brains and help/ 11 ».
Thanks a lot! It's still done !

Soundly beaten in 2 sets by his arch-rival, who played a perfect match, the finalist shed a tear, while he was given the silver tray.

Last NIGHT, during the COMMUTE back home, OWING to the swinging of the train I fell asleep, dreaming I was EATING a huge, blueberry-FLAVOURED cake, in company of a wonderful LONG-HAIRED young woman, whose DREAMY blue eyes were making me go EVENTUALLY on cloud nine, UNLESS something would break that magic moment; then I suddenly awoke, empty handed. 6o

I’m dreamy ; you owe your life to your dark-skinned friend met on the commute, who, unless you don’t help him, can’t start his car, in order to thank you for that, make you eat a pistachio flavoured cake and eventually you miss the derailed train during the night.(49 words)

We have tried to make each euro profitable, what led us to make the hard choices . However, Suzy don't know I am here, and I'd rather if we change nothing.

thanks a lot, dear HERE4U, these last exercises were still interesting for me; Thank you for the correction

FINISHED
Hello Here4U
Thanks a lot for this exercise. I did my best, though I must have fallen into a couple of traps since I didn't find this one that difficult I cross my fingers...

I)Translate into English:
"Why have you just called me Maggie?" "It was a slip of the tongue : having talked about my ex brought back lots of memories, many of which were painful but some of which were also very happy.

We've tried to make the most of every euro (*), which has led(*) us to make difficult choices. Anyway, Susy doesn't know I'm here, and I would appreciate if we could change nothing.

"Who has spat in the homework notebook ? You'd better own up! I won't harm you!" "I did" "I'll take care of you. (*) For that, you'll bring me your correspondence notebook."
(*) Lesquelles auraient pu être acceptées parmi : You're history, kiddo. Your time's up. You're through.

Beaten fair and square in two straight sets by his long-standing rival who played a perfect match, the runner-up was awarded the silver salver, shedding a tear.

II) Translate into French : (sequel to the preceding translation).
«It seems silly to wait, doesn’t it? He might as well come now as later, get used to running sheep on the black soil plains, which I’m sure is quite different from sheep in New Zealand.

She shrugged. «I’m perfectly alright…»

III) Playing with words :
I OWE you a secret about her DREAMY boyfriend : last NIGHT, after her daily COMMUTE, he EVENTUALLY invited her to EAT richly FLAVOURED dishes and UNLESS I miss my guess, this GOOD-LOOKING man proposed to her. (37)

Dear Friends and hardworkers!
Once again, you've given your best! Congratulations to all of you.

I)Translate into English:
«Why have you just called me Maggie?» «It was a slip of the tongue; speaking about my former wife stirred up a lot of memories, many of which were painful, but some were very happy ones too.»

- « Tu viens de m’appeler » = passé immédiat = present perfect + just = Sujet + HAVE/ HAS + JUST + PARTICIPE PASSE
- Un lapsus = a slip of the tongue= (un glissement de la langue !) Mes élèves aiment beaucoup cette expression !
- Remuer des souvenirs = to stir up memories.

We've been trying to make every dollar count, which has led us to very tough choices. For the record, Susy doesn't know that I've come here, and I would appreciate if we kept it that way.

- Rentabiliser chaque euro = to make every € count/ to make something count/
- Faire des choix = to make choices
- Quoiqu’il en soit = all of this aside/ anyway/ either way/ anyhow/

«Who has spat in the homework notebook? Do own it up! I won’t hurt you!» «I did it! » «Your number’s up! As a reward, bring me your parent communication log/ parent-teacher contact book.»
-« Qui a craché » = bilan d’action => present perfect.
- « Qu’il se dénonce » = let him own it up!/to own up to/ denounce himself!/

Beaten Hollow in two neat/ straight sets by his lifelong rival, who did a perfect match, the runner-up was awarded the silver platter, shedding a tear.
Maxwell!
- Battre à plate-couture= to be beaten hollow/
- 2 sets secs = two neat sets/ straight sets
- Rival de toujours = lifelong rival/ rival of old/

II) Translate into French: (sequel to the preceding translation).
« It seems silly to wait, doesn’t it? He might as well come now as later, get used to running sheep on the black soil plains, which I’m sure is quite different from sheep in New Zealand. Then when I’m gone he can step into my shoes without feeling the pinch.» Head lowered, she watched Father Ralph closely.

«What’s the matter, do you think you’re ill?» he asked quickly, a real concern in his eyes.
She shrugged. «I’m perfectly alright…»
Coleen McCULLOUGH, The Thorn Birds.

(1) = To run sheep= Lien internet

Lien internet

(2)= quand je ne serai plus = understatement for « when I’m dead »
-«feel the pinch» = to be in financial difficulties/ = souffrir financièrement
-« anxiously» = Fébrilement/ nerveusement

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Cette fois encore, j'ai corrigé vos phrases au mieux, en essayant de modifier les productions aussi peu que possible.

- I OWE you a secret about her DREAMY boyfriend: last NIGHT, after her daily COMMUTE, he EVENTUALLY invited her to EAT richly FLAVOURED dishes and UNLESS I miss my guess, this GOOD-LOOKING man proposed to her. (37)

- UNLESS that DREAMY girl EATS the strawberry FLAVOURED cake she OWES her WELL-MANNERED friend, he will EVENTUALLY spend his COMMUTE talking about the NIGHT when he dreamt of such a cake! (32)

- UNLESS his brother was BAD-TEMPERED he OWED an unforgettable evening to Stephanie ; on the COMMUTE... Robert was DREAMY; a shower, he would put ON his new suit and would take her TO EAT a strawberry FLAVORED ice cream in town, EVENTUALLY in a starry NIGHT... (46)

- I owe you an evening OUT; we will take the COMMUTE train to GO to this DREAMY restaurant and EAT its strawberry-FLAVOURED cakes, UNLESS you choose this hip NIGHT-club EVENTUALLY with its famous shaved-skull disc jockey. ( 39)

- During my COMMUTE by train, in the NIGHT, in front of me a DREAMY woman, sitting on a WIDELY-USED bench, WAS EATING an appetizing FLAVOURED cake, when suddenly she fainted, and UNLESS I had rapidly acted, her health would have worsened, so I called a doctor; she EVENTUALLY recovered her mind, she said she OWED me her life.(60)

- EVENTUALLY my RED-CURLED HAIRED sister measures all the COMMUTE she has lived since that NIGHT, their meeting, she OWES everything to him, they feel happy together UNLESS I am wrong, they often EAT out where she can choose her highly FLAVOURED meals that her DREAMY husband can not stand! (50)

- Last NIGHT, during the COMMUTE back home, OWING to the swinging of the train, I fell asleep, dreaming I was EATING a huge, blueberry FLAVOURED cake, in company of a wonderful LONG-HAIRED young woman, whose DREAMY blue eyes were EVENTUALLY making me go on cloud nine, UNLESS something would interrupt that magical moment; then I suddenly awoke, empty-handed.(61)

- I’m dreamy; you owe your life to your dark-skinned friend met on the commute, who, unless you help him, can’t start his car; in order to thank you for that, makes you eat a pistachio flavoured cake and eventually you miss the train which derailed during the night.(49)

- From now on, you will owe the money to do this commute, and to celebrate, unless you have planned something else, I will ask you to prepare a deliciously flavored meal to eat tonight, eventually, and I believe that unless you want to continue to live in a dreamy world, you can become an accomplished young man.(57)
