Bonsoir, mes chers p'tits mignons

. Thème I. ----------------------------------------------------

Hello Violet,
thank for this"choice cut "

Goodd evening
Here is my try

The last days had been stifling . We had oats and barley already brought in and for two days wheat was our goal . Heat was making the air vibrate from a dense dust making the eyes and throat sting and from the jerky noise of the machinery . Women dark skirts had slowly become grey as hair and head-dress ,a brownish sweat was streaming men's necks and faces . Only Gauvain was working stripped to the waist . Standing at the top of an hay cart he severed in a move of his sickle the hay bonds holding the sheaves toghether throwing them in an elegant move on the treadmil where they were running down in a jolt . He was shining from a nice yellow sweat under the sun among the white wheat flying around him , and his muscles playing restless under his skin , as these from the strong horses rump bringing him periodically new sheaves loads .

I had never seen man beeing so Man..... exept in American movies and I was proud to participate to that ceremony and for once to be part of his world . I enjoyed everything in these burning days....

We were so close and politely inquiering about work or fishing . Did the fish bite ? And you ? your exam? questions which we were listening with only half an ear , as these shell you don't even pickup anymore during a winter walk on the beach .
And then that evening ...! in that twilight zone ..... at this moment we separate our ways , in spite of tireness moving his features , Gauvain... suggested unexpectedly " to take a ride to Concarneau "
The night is there with these hours....! when you are less on your guards .... he starts to talk about him .
She listens to him suddenly so eloquent , this little boy , her first love who became captain courageous and dark from a world which didn't have its Le Roy Ladurie

Hello Violet
The choice is hard :" Neither with you nor without you "

....The last day had been stifling. We had already brought in oats, barley and we had got in wheat for two days. The air vibrated with heat, with a dense dust which stung eyes and throats, with the jerkey sound of the combine harvester. The dark skirts of the women had gradually become grey like hair and headdresses while the faces and necks of the men were furrowed by streams of brownish sweat. Gauvain was the only one working bare-chested.Standing on the top of a cart,he cut off with a sickle the string of straw binding the sheaves then with a hayfork,in a noble gesture,he threw them on the treadmill where they fell down jolting. His beautiful young body glistened with sweat in the sun, in the midst of the blond wheat blowing round him . His muscles flexed without respite under his skin like ones of the buttocks ? of two strong horses which periodically brought him new loads of sheaves .
I had never seen a such male man except in the American movies and I was proud to participate in this ceremony and to feel, for once, support of his own world.I enjoyed altogether during those blazing days .....

..;We were still friends , we politely inquired after work or fishing :" Did you get a bite today ? And you ,what about your exams ?" questions of which we listened to the answers with one ear like shell not even picked up on a beach in Winter.
And then that evening,at twilight....as we were leaving, in spite of tiredness which softened his features ,Gauvain unexpectedly offered" to go for a ride to Concarneau."
It's that night, during those hours ,when we let ourself go that he begins to talk about himself. She listens to him , eloquent, the little boy ,the sweetheart of her teenage ,becoming a brave and lowly captain of a world that didn't have its Le Roy Ladurie ...

hello dear Violet

Neither with you, nor without you.

The last day had been stifling. We had already brought in oats and barley, and we had been doing the same with wheat for two days. The air was vibranting, with a thick dust which made eyes and throats irritated, and with the jerked noise of the engine. The dark shirts of the women had gradually turned grey like hair and headdresses. Brooks of brunish sweat ran down men's faces and necks. Gauvin was the only one working bare-chested. Standing up on the top of a cart, with a stroke of a sickle he cut the straw bond which surrounded the sheaves then, he pitchforked them, with a noble gesture, on the conveyor-belt where they got down in jumping. He was gleaming with an healthy and young sweat under the sun among the golden wheats scattering around him. His muscles continuously played under his skin, just like the ones of the two strong horses's rump, that periodically brought him new sheaves to charge.
I had never seen a man so manly except in american films, and I was proud to take part to that ceremony and to feel myself in symbiosis with his personnal world. I liked everything in these blazing days.

We didn't use the "tu" form yet. We politely made do with asking about work or fishing :"Well, were the fish bitting yesterday?" "and you, what about your exams?" Questions of which we abstractedly listened to the answer, like a shell you don't take trouble gathering up on a beach in winter. And then, this evening between day and night... when we were about to leave, in spite of the fatigue... which softened his features, Gauvin , in unexpected way, suggested to ride to Concarneau. It's the night, during these hours, when the defences fall away that he starts to tell about himself. She listens to him, suddently eloquent... the little boy..his first love... turned into a brave and humble captain of a world which didn't have had its own Le Roy Ladurie.

Merci Violet

Bonjour Violet,

Neither with you nor without you,

The last day had been stifling (hot). The oats and the barley had been harvested in and they had moved on to (harvesting)wheat for two days. The heat, together with a thick dust that irritated both eyes and throats, and the staccado thud of the machine made the air vibrate. The dark-coloured skirts of the women had slowly turned grey, so had their hair and their headdresses, and rivers of darkish sweat were streaming down the men's faces and necks. Gauvin was the only one to work barechested. Standing on top of a cart, he would slit with a single stroke of his sickle the wisp of straw holding(binding) together the sheaves, and then (he would) fork them in and swing them majestically on the conveyor belt which would carry them down jerkily. He was glistening in the sun with his beautiful young sweat, surrounded with the blond wheat flying all around him, and his muscles rippled relentlessly under his skin, just like those on the croup of the two sturdy horses that brought him new loads of sheaves at regular intervals.
I had never seen such a manly fellow,(such a he-man) except in the American films, and I was proud of taking part in that ceremony ,feeling for once that I did belong to that world of his. I relished everything in those scorching days.

We would still indulge in friendly conversations, We would inquire politely about the other's working or fishing day : " So, how did it go ?" "What about your exams?",Those were questions whose answers we would absent-mindedly listen to, like sea-shells that we no longer even care to pick on a winter beach.

Then came that evening; hovering between sunset and night...As we were about to draw away, in spite of the weariness that softened his features,Gauvain suddenly proposed unexpectedly "to go for a ride in Concarneau."

It is at night, during those hours when (you lower your guard) defences fall, that he will start to talk about himself. She listens to him as he suddenly turns eloquent, the little boy, her childhood lover, who has become a courageous and obscure captain of a world that never had its (his) Le Roy Ladurie...

Ouf !

Hello Violet,

Neither with you nor without

The previous day had been stifling. The oats and the barley were already brought in and for two days they see to the corn. The air was shimmering with heat, full of a thick dust that stung the eyes and the throats and with the staccato stamping of the engine. The women’s dark skirts had little by little turned grey as well as the hair and the headdresses and the men’s faces and necks were streaming with a brownish sweat. Gauvain was the only one working bare-chested.
Standing on the top of a cart, he severed with his sickle the string of straw that tied up the sheaves and, with a noble gesture, swung them on the conveyor belt on which they joggled down. He was glistening with a beautiful young sweat in the sunshine among the golden corn that fluttered around him and his muscles were constantly moving under his skin just like those on the croup of the two strong horses which regularly brought him new loads of sheaves. I had never seen such a manly man except in American movies and I was proud to be part of this ceremony and to be a member of his own world for once. I enjoyed everything in those burning days.
We were still on friendly terms and politely asked the other about work or fishing “Well, how was fishing ?” “And you, what about your exams ?”
Questions which answer was hardly listened to, like those shells you don’t even bother to pick up on a winter beach.
And then came that evening, at twilight.. We were about to part and despite the tiredness that softened his features, Gauvain unexpectedly suggested “to go for a drive to Concarneau”
And at night, during those hours when the reserve weakens, he began to talk about himself. She listened to his new eloquence, the little boy, her childhood lover, who had become the brave and obscure captain of a world which had not had its Le Roy Ladurie…

Good Evening Violet
Here is my try

Neither with you nor without you.
The last day had been stifling. We had already brought in the oat and barley Harvested and for two days we were working with the wheat.
The air shimmered with heat, with a thick dust which tickled the eyes and the throat and with the jerky noise of the machine.

The women’s dark skirts, like the hair and headdresses, turned gradually grey, and a brownish sweat was pouring down the faces and necks of the men.
Gauvain was the only one who worked barechested.

Up at the top of a cart, He cut off with the sickle the straw link Which retained the sheaves then forked them over to throw them with a noble gesture on the conveyer belt where they came down jumping.
He was glistening with a nice young sweat under the sun, while the golden wheat blew all around him, and his muscles flexed relentlessly under his skin, similar to those of two strong horses rumps who brought him regularly new loads of sheaves.

I liked everything in those blazing days….We were still on first-name terms, we politely inquired about work or fishing : “So, did you get something? – and what about your exams ?, but we distractedly listened the reply, like shellfishes we no longer picked up on the beach in winter.
Then, that evening, at twilight, as we were leaving each other, despite the tiredness which softened his features, Gauvain suggested unexpectedly “to go to Concarneau”.

Bonjour Violet,

The last day had been stifling. We had already brought oats and barley in and since two days we were been setting about wheat.
Air vibrated with the heat, there was a dense dust which stung eyes and throats and from the machine a jerky noise.
Little by little, women's dark skirts had become grey like hairs and headdresses and streams of brownish sweet criss-crossed on men's faces and necks.
Only Gauvain worked bare-chested.
Standing up, at the top of a cart he cut only one stroke of sickle the straw link which held sheaves back and then he pitchforked them to throw them up with a solemn movement on the "conveyor-belt" "where they jumped while they going down".
He shone of a beautiful young sweat under the sun, among the blond wheat which flew around him, and his muscles moved without respite under his skin, similar to those two strong horses' croup which periodically brought him some news load.
I have never seen man such man, only in the American films, and I was proud to participate at this ceremony and for once I feel myself in solidarity with his world at him.
All appealed to me in those ardent days......

Merci

VOilà, j'ai posté ma réponse avant d'avoir lu les autres réponses sinon ça me décourage.

The last day had been stifling.
We had already brought the oat and the barley in, and since two days we were busy with the wheat .
The air was vibrating under the heat, and from the dust stinging our eyes and throats, and from the choking noise of the machine.
The women's dark skirts were becoming gray like their hair under their hats, and rivers of brown sweat were dripping from the faces and necks of the men.
Only Gauvain was working bare-chested.
Standing at the top of the cart, he cut the straw ribbon maintaining the stalks ,pitched them and threw them with a majestic movement on the moving carpet where they jerked down (si ça se trouve je dis un gros mot haha!).
He was glistening under the sun, among the golden wheat flying around him, and his muscles were visible under his skin, strong like the rump of those two powerful horses bringing him new stalks.
I had never seen such a manly person but in american movies, and i was proud to be part of this ceremony and to feel for once committed in his world.
I liked everything of those passionate days...

...we were still being colloquial to each other, we were asking politely how was work or fishing going :
« so, how did it go ? And your exams ? We were not really listening to the answers, like shells we're not picking up from the beach during winter ???.
And this evening, ...when it was time to leave, despite the weariness making his face more tender, Gauvain offered suddenly to « go to Concarneau'
At night, when time wipes all barriers, he talked about himself.
She listened to him, the little boy, the love of her youth, who became a brave and unknown captain of a world who didn't get it's Le Roy Ladurie.

Cheers to you, fourteen friends, and congratulations (dear may, you'll repost your work, won't you?).

...................... Van Gogh................. V.Gabriel Gilbert.......

------------------------------ " Neither with you nor without you." Version. + -------------------------------------------

---The last day had been stifling. We had already gathered in the barley and oats, and we had worked on the wheat for two days . The air shimmered with the heat and a fine choking dust which got into our eyes and throats , and throbbed with the noise of the threshing machine. The dust powdered the hair and head-dresses of the women and turned their dark skirts grey, while streams of brownish sweat trickled down the faces and necks of the men. Only Gavin worked bare-chested. Standing on top of the cart, he slashed the twine which bound the sheaves with one stroke of his sickle, then pitched the sheaves and hurled them on to the conveyor belt in a gesture I thought magnificent. The sheaves bounced their way down the belt. He gleamed with fine young sweat in the sunlight, the golden wheat flying all around him, while his muscles played ceaselessly under his skin , like the shining muscled (hind)quarters of the great horses which periodically brought fresh loads of sheaves.

I had never seen a man so manly except in Hollywood movies, and I was proud to be a participant at this annual ritual. To be, for once, part of his world. I loved everything about those sultry days.[...]
...Oh, we'd still be 'friends' of course, still ask after each other's lives - " How's the catch these days?' 'Exams going OK then?'- but the answers would be treated absent-mindedly , like shells you don't bother to gather on a winter beach.
But now, this evening, hovering between day and night, between dream and reality...As the party was about to break up, Gavin , in spite of the tiredness softening his features, unexpectedly suggested driving over to Concarneau.
It was then, during the hours when people tend to drop their guards ,that he would begin to speak about himself. She carefully listened to him becoming eloquent : the little boy, the love of her teens, now a brave and mysterious captain of a world which didn't have its Le Roy Ladurie.[..].

--------------Adapted from " Vessels of the heart"(1988) by BENOITE GROULT (born in 1920)----------------( with the help of Mo Teitelbaum's translation : " SALT ON OUR SKIN" : 1992)

" The knights [nts] of the round table " offraient un bon choix.

2 ) The last day : c'était le dernier des derniers. Ils se reverraient deux ans plus tard . Cet extrait a une belle suite et dans ces cas-là, time flies : ils dépasseront largement minuit : donc, c'est "the last day".

3 ) To stifle [stfl] :to smother : to suffocate de manque d'air. Stifling : ad. verbal : étouffant (comme à "l'estouffade"!)

4 ) The previous [prvis]days, the preceding [pri'si:di]days. The days before.

--Eddie Barclay's previous wives , aurait-on dit à la 8ème!
--Liz Taylor's previous husbands , aurait-on dit au 7ème.
--The former...the latter : si ' seulement' 2 ! "Rebecca" , a thrilling novel by Daphné du Maurier (Rebecca I , the hero's first wife..and the second one whose name is never divulged : perhaps Rebecca II, is haunted by her) .

An unforgettable suspense adaptation by A. Hitchcock.

6 ) To gather : to pick up (ce qui s' est échoué là ), to collect ; to gather in : to collect and store indoors.
A family gathering : une réunion de famille.

Pause : dinner time.

Ce soir(it is 10.30PM), sorry, I am fatigued !! Tired ,I mean , in other common words. Have a good night ! Sweet dreams ! Yr Violet.

Hello violet !

Neither with you, nor without you.
...........[..The last day had been suffocating. Oats and barley were already gathered in and we were harvesting wheat for two days. The air was vibrant of heat, with a dense dust which itched eyes and throats, and with the staccato noise of the machine. Women's dark skirts had gradually become as gray as their hair and headdresses, while brownish sweat streamed down the men's furrowed faces and necks. Only Gauvain was working bare-chested. Standing on top of a cart, with a sickle, he cut the straw binding around the sheaves before nobly tossing them onto the conveyor belt with his pitchfork, where they bounced downwards. Under the sun, he glowed with lovely young sweat, surrounded by the pale wheat flying around. His muscles flexed tirelessly under his skin, like those in the strong rumps of the horses which periodically brought him new loads of sheaves.
I had never seen such a virile man except in American films. I was proud to take part in this tradition and for once, to feel supportive of his world. I enjoyed everything during these sweltering days...

...We were still friends and we enquired politely about work or fishing: "So, how dit it go ? - And you, your exams?"... We absentmindedly listened to the answers to the questions like shells on a winter beach you don't pick up anymore.
And then that evening, suspended between night and day... Just as we separated, despite the tiredness which softened his facial features, Gauvain unexpectedly proposed "to ride to Concarneau".
Then at night, during those hours when defences are down, he started talking about himself. She listened how he suddenly became eloquent, the little boy, her teenage lover, grown into a courageous and obscure captain in a world devoid of its Le Roy Ladurie...]

Merci !

Sorry.

So...back for a while...it is 8.41PM

(intransitive) To shine with a veiled, tremulous, or intermittent light; to gleam faintly; to glisten; to glimmer.

To get into à mon avis rend mieux l'infiltration constante et gênante .

= to have a frog in your throat.

14 ) To throb: to vibrate or pulsate with a steady rhythm.Avec ce staccato de la batteuse, oui !

Pour les mélomanes Lien internet
..

To pound !

Gourmands, gourmandes , vous penserez et prononcerez [swts] sweeter(+) pour sweets ("i" long!) bonbons, desserts...et sweater [swt]pour le vêtement.(comme "è")

19 ) To trickle down : couler (en gouttes), suinter To flow in drops and small streams.

.... très beau, n'est-il pas ? to trickle down.

Bonjour, dear and patient friends,

I hope you are also enjoying all that wherever you are.

22 ) The twine : a strong string of two threads or wists of straw (to hold a sheaf together) Mid.Eng. twinen; Old Eng. twin = double thread.

23 ) To bind , bound, bound : lier . "
It was bound to happen" : cela devait arriver ...(lié par destin?)/ Gavin and George were not bound to fall in love with each other , they had nothing in common..,yet ..les contraires s'assemblent parfois. / These two were bound to marry (ces deux-là avaient ,eux , tout pour ( s'aimer et) se marier : liés aussi par le destin ?) .

To bind into / to unbind.

Peut être le coup frappé à l'horloge : on the twelve strokes of midnight , the disguised figure ( "The Red Death" - Edgar A.Poe)appeared and "killed" all the dancers, one by one, even the boldest.(whenever the ebony clock struck, actually)

Et...toujours attention à votre choix : to stroke(rég.) = to caress.

25 )One stroke of his sickle: un coup de (sa) faucille.

Lien internet

26 ) Ah ! Voilà l'os : "there is the rub" ("Hamlet", Shakespeare : "to die ? to sleep no more?

To pitch, fork, to skrewer, too.

To rock : bercer(bébé),(se)balancer, danser !
To toss est surtout jeter en l'air comme le "tossing" initiatique (Eton, Harrow schools, some African countries..)..ou la crêpe qui décolle. Ou pile ou face : heads or tails !To toss a coin.

27 ) A conveyor [knv] belt : un tapis roulant ( a wide strip of rubber or metal moving constantly (and in a factory, making people work extremely rapidly).

28 ) A gesture [s]mot quasi transparent = a movement.

29 ) Magnificent [mg'nifisnt]:ma-gni-fi-que and noble , that's right.

30 ) To bounce [bns]: rebondir. Déjà vu dans A.Christie avec Tuppence , the "bouncing" detective in her early sixties (bondissante, plutôt trépidante ).

....Connaissez-vous ? ...cute aren't they ? Baby- bouncers.Une trouvaille...autre découverte de maman en GB, a "long" time ago! Hop! Hop! Hop!...

31 ) In the sunlight : sous le soleil "exactement".

33 ) Hindquarters or quarters of a horse : la croupe d'une monture.

34 ) Sturdy , great horses : robustes , les chevaux .

34 ) A man so manly( emphase), such a virile man, such a manly man : un bel homme, quoi ! No more comments..

.... Lien internet
-- No comments, please..apart from....the fact Gavin must be more..., less...moins grec, quoi!

..It is dinner time. Sorry for interrupting ..Have a good meal or digestion ! See you afterwards. (je relirai après, merci)

35 ) Hollywood movies : les deux font la paire.(pictures or films in UK)

................. ...vous en reprendrez bien un peu, mesdames ?...............

et lui ? (coucou elisa) .. ou lui: Lien internet
( Oh! Dear !...)

Scorching, blazing, thrilling ,exciting, thrilling...

37 ) So common and usual questions...they would be treated..: forme fréquentative au passé .(= used to..) ." We always.."

....Lien internet
(coucou np)

38 ) Not to bother : ne pas s'en faire, ne pas se soucier de , "laisser courir"..Don't bother ! I'll do it for you.

39 ) To hover ['hv ] ou [hv]= to hang in the air , comme un faucon qui plane...to straddle dit np...cet instant suspendu..

40 )The party = the group.

Pardon me !. On ne va pas jusqu'au trip...

42 ) Concarneau in Brittany : vive la Bretagne !

Lien internet

43 ) The hours [i: devant voyelle ] hours ( "h" muet)[z], comme celles jouées par N.Kidman dans le rôle de great Virginia Woolf

.....Lien internet

Lien internet

44 ) To lose one's guards [gdz] = to let one's barriers come down = to lose one's defenses : relâcher son contrôle, s'abandonner et se livrer plus facilement.

The poor, the wealthy.

.Have a good and soothing night, dear all.

Hello ,friends....un petit "break" dans un après-midi affairé..Have a nice time if you are lucky enough to relax in the sun.

The next part will be much easier and really pretty, anyway. Autrement enivrant !

Merci encore Violet, j'espère que vous retrouverez très vite le top de votre forme and may the March Hare not forget to bring you tasty chocolates too

Happy Easter weekend !

Like a lot of people ,I don't take enough time for reading .
This translation is a good way to make us remember about it .
The pleasure to sit in a quiet place with just a soft music or only the silence and a nice novel
What a good way to escape for a moment to the stress of a hard working day .
Thank you to let us know about these authors

have a nice day and a nice Happy Easter

The train can start with a jerk.

Quel superbe travail! bravo!

Je m'attendais à y découvrir "The solitary reaper", mais tu as préféré, "Jack

Wow! What a colossal work. A magnum opus! It will take weeks just to uncover all of the gems. Thank you for all of your hard work.
