Message de violet91 posté le 13-11-2011 à 23:01:53 (S | E | F)
Hello dear all .

On y va ! Let's go !

---------------------------------- Enseignement ludique .

Hello dear Violet,
thanks a lot for these original texts,to say the list....

A)Arithmétique :

...1) Hubert the wild boar cries each time he listens to the quartet by Schubert " Death and the Maiden".His tears run down with a 1 dm3 flow for one hour.Work out in cm3 the volume of tears that poor wild boar Hubert will have poured during the 14 minutes and 15 secondes of the "Andante con moto"playing time.

...2 ) A Breton woman spends half an hour to pluck a seagull.
How long will it take for three Breton women to pluck an angel?
The surface area of the seagull is 400 cm2 while the one of the angel is 1,8 m2.

...3 )A good dairy cow gives 40 litres of milk a day. A farmer pointed out that when his cow closed its eyes during the milking time, she gave condensed milk.
Work out ,in cubic meters, the condensed milk quantities given by a cow annually.
one will take a 5 for 1 concentration.

..B) Grammar

...a)I'm afraid the ostrich which has just swallowed a grandfather clock will have difficulties to sit down.

...b) Exceptionally, the prison will be opened on Tuesday the 14th.

..c) On an evening he was bored to death,he decided to pluck the hair from his hedgehog..poor thing!

...d) Which is the salmon that caught a sinusitis while crossing the Artic ocean?

...e ) Water doesn't boil up at 90°, neither the right angle .

...f) It's that unfortunate habit to scratch the head of the crocodile which cost the zoo keeper his arm.

...g) This ostrich that lays standing up is a very bad mother.

I put the calculations off, until later...
calculs 2)---
A brittany woman spend 30 minutes to pluck a 400 m2 see gull.1,8 m2= 180 cm2.
one brittany woman'll spend : (30 x 18.000) :400 = 1350 minutes.or 22 hours and 5 minutes.
three brittany women, working together will spend:22 hours and 5 minutes:3 = 8h 10 m.
In other words, it's shorter and less tiring to buy a seagull already dead and plucked.Enjoy your meal

Hello,

Thank you Violet for this exercise !
Here is my contribution for part A ... part B is coming next !

A )
...1 ) Hubert the wild boar, cries each time he listens to Schubert's quatuor "The girl and the death".Its tears drop with a 1dm3 per hour flow. Compute, in cm3, the tears volume dropped by Hubert the wild boar during the "andante con moto" which last 14 minutes and 15 seconds.
14 minutes and 15 seconds represents 14,25 minutes
1dm3 per hour is equivalent to 1000cm3 per 60 minutes that is 1000/60cm3 per minute
1000/60*14,25=237,5 so, the tears volume dropped by Hubert the wild boar is 237,5 cm3

....2 ) A breton lady needs half an hour to pluck a sea gull. How long will need 3 breton ladies to pluck an angel? The sea gull's area is 400 cm², whereas an angel's area is 1,8m².
1,8m²=18000cm² ; 18000/400=45 an angel represents 45 sea gulls
During half an hour 3 breton ladies will pluck 3 sea gulls. 45=15*3 15 times half an hour is 7 hours and a half
So, 3 breton ladies will need 7 hours and a half to pluck an angel.

....3 ) A good milky dairy cow gives each day 40 litres of milk. A farmer noticed that when the cow closes its eyes, it gives concentrated milk. Compute, in cube meters, the milk's volume of milk annually given by a cow.
You will consider a concentration of 5 to 1.
Supposing the cow closes its eyes all day long, it produces 200 litres per day.
200*365=73000 A cow produces each year 73000 litres of milk.

Good evening

....a )I'm afraid the ostrich which has just swallowed a pendulum grandfather clock will have some problems to sit down.

....b )Exceptionally, the jail will be open on Thursday Tuesday the 14th.

....c ) One evening as he was getting bored, he decided to pluck his hedgehog.

....d ) Which salmon get a sinusitis while crossing the Arctic Ocean?

....e ) Water doesn't boil at 90°, neither does the right angle.

- A good milk cow gives 40 litres a day. A farmer noticed that when his cow closed its eyes while milked she gave condensed milk. Work out (in cubic metres) how much condensed milk a year a cow can produce
You'll take a 5 to 1 concentration

B - I'm afraid the ostrich which has just swallowed a grandfather clock might have some difficulty sitting down
- Just for this week, the prison will be open on Tuesday 14th
- One evening, as he was bored stiff, he decided to pluck his hedgehog
- Which salmon has caught a sinusitis swimming across the Arctic Ocean ?
- The water doesn't boil at 90° neither does a right angle
- The regrettable habit of scratching the crocodile's head has costed his arm to the zoo keeper
- This ostrich which lays upright (no wonder poor thing with a clock inside...) is not fit to be a mother

Thank you Violet for this very funny (but difficult) exercise

Good morning violet and thank you for this unusual exercise.

Arithmetic :

1) Each time he listens to «  Death and the Maiden » the quartet by Schubert, Hubert the wild boar cries. The flow of his tears is 1dm3 per hour. Work out in cm3 the volume of the tears shed by Hubert the wild boar within the « andante con moto » which lasts 14 minutes and 15 secondes.

2) A Breton woman needs half-an-hour to pluck a seagull.
How long will three Breton women take to pluck an angel, given the surface area of the gull is 400 cm2 whereas the angel's one is 1,8 m2 ?

3) A good dairy cow gives 40 litres of milk a day. A farmer has noticed that if his cow kept its eyes shut, it gave condensed milk.
Work out in m3 how much condensed milk is given by a cow per year.
A 5 to 1 concentration will be taken.

Grammar :

a) I'm afraid that the ostrich which has just swallowed a grandfather clock could get into difficulty in sitting down.

b) Exceptionally, the prison is to be open on Thursday 14th.

c) One night he was getting bored stiff, he decided to pluck his hedgehog. (piquant situation, isn't it?)

d) Has any salmon ever caught a sinusitis from crossing the Arctic Ocean ?

e) Water doesn't boil at 90°, neither does a right angle.

f) It is his unfortunate habit of wanting to scratch the crocodiles' pates that cost the zoo keeper his arm.

g) This ostrich which remains standing up while laying its eggs is unworthy to be a mother. (On the other hand, if it is the same as in a), it has to be forgivable )

Hello violet !

Part 1
1-  Hubert the wild boar cries whenever he listens to Schubert's Quartet 'Death and the Maiden'.
Tears flow at the rate of 1 dm3 per hour.
Calculate in cm3 the volume of Hubert the boar's tears flowing during the 'andante con moto' which lasts 14 minutes and 15 seconds.
1000 x 14.25 ÷ 60 = 237.5 cm³

2-  A Breton woman needs half an hour to pluck a seagull. How long will three Breton women need to pluck an angel? The gull has a surface area of 400 cm², while the angel has a body surface area of 1,8 m².
30 x 18000 ÷ 400 ÷ 3 = 450' = 7h½.

3-  A good dairy cow yields 40 litres of milk a day. A farmer noticed that when his cow shut its eyes during the milking, it produced condensed milk. Calculate in cubic metres the quantity of condensed milk produced annually by the cow. Take the ratio of concentration as 5 to 1.
Assuming the cow closes its eyes half way through the milking, it would produce 20 litres of fresh full milk and 4 L of condensed milk a day.
In a year it would produce 4 x 365 = 1,460 L or 1.460 m³ of condensed milk...In a leap year that would be 1.464 m³.

Part 2
a) I fear that the ostrich which has just swallowed a grandfather clock will have difficulties sitting down.
b) As an exception, the prison will be open on Tuesday 14th.
c) One night when he was bored, he decided to pluck his hedgehog.
d) Which salmon got sinusitis while crossing the Arctic Ocean?
e) Water doesn't boil at 90°;  the right angle doesn't either.
.f) His unfortunate habit of wanting to scratch the crocodiles' foreheads, cost the zoo keeper his arm.
g) This ostrich which lays its eggs standing upright is an uncaring mother.

I agree with you, maya! Maybe the grandfather clock has something to do with its behaviour!

Thank you very much, violet !  I thoroughly enjoyed this exercise !

Hello Violet
Thank you for this freaky and funny exercise!

Part A: Arithmetic
1- Hubert the boar cries each time he is listening to the Schubert Quartet 'Death and the Maiden'. His tears are running down at a flow rate 1 dm3 per hour. Calculate in cm3 the volume of tears shred by Hubert the boar during the duration of 'andante con moto' that lasts 14 minutes and 15 seconds.

................ Recreational teaching / Teaching with fun. Translation 1 .................................................

....... ARITHMETIC .
--1 ) Each time Hubert ,the wild boar, listens to " Death and the Maiden" , a string quartet by Schubert, he cries his eyes out .The flow of his tears is 1 dm3 per hour. Work out in cm3 the volume of tears shed by Hubert the boar during the ' andante con moto' which is 14 minutes and 15 seconds long.

Or

-- Whenever the wild boar Hubert hears ( or listens to ) Schubert's string quartet ' Death and the Maiden' he cries his eyes out. If the flow of Hubert's tears is 1 dm3 per hour , what would (will) be the volume of tears he sheds during 'the andante con moto' which lasts for 14 mins and 15 secs.

Comment faire ?
1 cubic decimetre (US decimeter) = 1000 cubic centimetres
1000/60 = 16.666... cubic centimetres per minute x 14.25 minutes = 237.5 cubic centimetres of tears.
(for np's solution )

--2 ) Plucking a seagull takes a breton woman half an hour. How long will (or would) it take three breton women to pluck an angel ? The seagull has a surface area of 400 cm2 whereas the angel's one is 1,8m2.

or
-- If it takes a Breton woman half an hour to pluck a seagull which has a surface area of 400 cm2, how long would it take three Breton women to pluck an angel with a surface area of 1,8 m2 ?

Comment faire ?
30 x 18000 ÷ 400 ÷ 3 = 450' = 7h½. (
for ariane's solution )

or
1,8m²=18000cm² ; 18000/400=45 an angel represents 45 sea gulls
During half an hour 3 breton ladies will pluck 3 sea gulls. 45=15*3 15 times half an hour is 7 hours and a half

-- The milk yield of a good dairy cow is 40 litres a day. A farmer noticed that if his cow closes its eyes while being milked , it produces condensed milk. Using a concentration of 5 for 1 , work out in m3 a cow's annual production of condensed milk.
.....................................
Comment faire ?.
.
. Je le concentre de 5 à 1.
. Je le transforme en m3.

40 x 365 days = 14600 liters = 14.6 cubic meters total of which 2.92 cubic meters is concentrated.(for np's solution )
or le volume annuel est de : 365 x 40 = 14600 litres.
Soit après concentration : 14600 : 5 = 2920 litres donc en cm3 : 2920 + 1000 = 2,92 m3..and ariane even thought of leap years!

Pourtant : Mathematics, Chemics(not Chemistry),,Physics, avionics, aeronautics, rhythmics, academics, phonetics, politics, economics, aesthetics ....les " grands" sujets à traiter ,nous dirons ///noms et adjectifs : aesthetic, agnostic, erotic, erratic, fatalistic, ironic, energetic, pathetic, symphonic!....and so on and so forth...

...Arithmetic,donc. Du Grec " arithmos" = number .
Arithmetic or arithmetics (from the Greek word ἀριθμός, arithmos “number”) is the oldest and most elementary branch of mathematics, used by almost everyone, for tasks ranging from simple day-to-day counting to advanced science and business calculations. It involves the study of quantity, especially as the result of combining numbers. In common usage, it refers to the simpler properties when using the traditional operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with smaller values of numbers

Decimal arithmetic, operations and number theory.

---On en trouverait l'origine dans l'ex-Congo belge (Central Africa),about 20,000 years BC.(cf.images Google)
The prehistory of arithmetic is limited to a small number of artifacts which may indicate conception of addition and subtraction, the best-known being the Ishango bone from central Africa, dating from somewhere between 20,000 and 18,000 BC although its interpretation is disputed.[2

Si vraiment il y a focalisation sur le processus (pas avec un v. de perception sans volonté = to hear # to listen to (on choisit de prêter l'oreille), on pourrait envisager une Be + ING. (sundeep?)

EX: Whenever his father was playing that concerto, the child would think of his late(feu) Grandfather playing it for him only.

Good evening, dear friends,

........Kiddies' day, today ..just over . Now, I can be yours.

--- 4 ) Entendre et écouter une musique : to hear, listen , play,...

--- a )Si Hubert fait ses courses au supermarché 'classe' lui aussi: 'fond' sonore : Schubert and that improbable quartet : he hears .(il n'est pas sourd et il n'a pas choisi ). / b ) Assis dans son fauteuil , il écoute ' England-Music' or 'Seattle Music' and knows the concerto is starting in a minute : then, he listens to it et choisit* (tant pis ou tant mieux- il est au-delà) de pleurer ou alors il fermerait son poste !/ c ) Si il fait passer le CD : he plays Schubert's quartet.

* he just can't help it : il ne peut s'en empêcher ...et d'ailleurs , pourquoi s'en empêcher ?

---5 ) String quartet n° 14 in D minor ( ré mineur)

" Death and the Maiden"

The quartet takes its name from the lied "Der Tod und das Mädchen" ("Death and the Maiden, D.531), which Schubert wrote in 1817. The theme of the song, which is the theme of the second movement of the quartet, is a death knell( un glas* ) that accompanies the song about the terror and comfort of death

The Maiden:

Oh! leave me! Prithee*, leave me! thou* grisly* man of bone!
For life is sweet, is pleasant.
Go! leave me now alone!
Go! leave me now alone!
Death:

Give me thy* hand, oh! maiden fair to see,
For I'm a friend, hath* ne'er distress'd *thee*.
Take courage now, and very soon
Within mine* arms shalt softly rest thee!"[

...Old English : prithee = please /thou- you, thee- you,thy-your / hath = has/ mine arms = my arms/ shalt = shall / grisly = grizzly = causing horror or dread.

---6 ) Mots abstraits : pas d'article .Life -Love- Death , Man (humanity) for instance. Institutions : Education,Justice , Army... It then means 'all of them'.

Just pour some water on your flowers, dear ! or some more tea , please !

---8 ) The ' andante con moto ' means : moderately slow with motion.
It is this or that (time) long = it lasts [lsts] : exercez-vous, will you ?. To be this or that time long = to last.

---9 ) "Measure for measure " ( a splendid play by Shakespeare)['mz; le petit z phonétique n'existe pas sur mon clavier = méjeu(r)].

- A litre BE ; a liter US :/ a metre BE (like theatre, centre...); a meter US .

( ' Salut Rigolo').

- Abbreviations : minutes [minits]= mns / seconds [skndz]= secs.

---11 ) Plucking seabirds ? Seagulls (mouettes),cormorants (cormorans)sterns...Poor things !!!(bravo, dolfine )
Lien internet

Shall I repeat I plead for pardon..I am respectful of angels (except groups of ' Hell's angels' ). It is that humorous exercise's fault !

---12 ) Not to confuse : dairy (laitière) and milky (laiteuse)
Therefore , a dairy cow can yield good milk under the Milky Way !( coucou très chère littleninablue : la voie lactée est une de ses passions )

--- 13 ) Not to confuse either : to notice : remarquer quelque chose / to point out : faire remarquer à quelqu'un / to remark : faire une remarque (plutôt désobligeante)

--- 14 ) To give, produce, yield (come field) : donner, produire.

----15 ) A good dairy cow peut donc produire 14.600 litres de lait par an.(14,600 liters).

........My God !

Hello, dear all. I hope you had a good day. Back to you, now.

Ah ! Those irregular verbs , again !

Ex:- He's read. He's read. He has read this book.(present perfect: bilan) . He is read (présent passif)by crowds of people.

.... I'd cut it. I'd cut it. I had cut it (past perfect). I would cut it (cond.présent). Méfiez-vous et soyez attentifs au contexte .

---17) Expression usitée : I am afraid that = je crains bien que . Or , this boy is absent-minded ( étourdi), I am afraid (dommage pour lui) Cette crainte ne vous engage pas trop.

- To fear [f]vous implique davantage . I fear (or I don't)injections. This mother fears her son gets into trouble again.

Elle est un animal donc neutre ( I don't know whether it is a female or a male or a neutered , like a cat)= it .Its (adj). Which, that : relatifs.
Now if you like her or him so much you call him Victor or Victoria , that is another thing.

---19 ) Nous constatons ( Look !) : the ostrich which has just swallowed : present perfect actif = bilan sous nos yeux - elle vient de ...: quelle visite !

--- 20 )To swallow : avaler .To eat : manger et mastiquer . To gulp down : engouffrer.(dans u zoo, l'une d'elles avait arraché et gulped down la grosse chaîne en or qu'un touriste exhibait sous son 'nez'! No showing off , na!
A swallow doesn't make a spring, as you know.

Masque de la mort rouge'!(1850,too) ( " The masque of the red death ")

-The Foucault pendulum in 1851 : rotation of the Earth.

---22 ) L'éventualité très humoristique : might find it hard to sit down . Il se pourrait bien que ...

---23 )Exceptionally (un seul 'n') = by way of exception (thanks, np)

---24 ) To open # to be open. . He has opened his eyes (actif) and now, his eyes are wide open.(passif)

---25 )The prison will be open ( panneau ou annonce : le cas, ici))///( the prison is to be open ): idée intéressante, mais ce serait comme un ban publié en mairie .

---26 ) Quelqu'un(e) semble avoir confondu ( this is new teaching as well, politically correct) Tuesday avec Thursday.

---27 ) To feel (or get, or be)bored [bd]( homophone de board :planche ): s'ennuyer- to feel bored stiff ( à mort)

Not to confuse with ' annoyed' = faché.

---28 )One evening (in particular ). Ce soir-là, pas un autre. Il faut le numéral.
One night, I had an awful dream...

You can spend a day swimming and sunbathing.

---30 ) A hedgehog is a cute animal, isn't it ? Et il faut de l'air pour le dire ![ hhg ].........

---31 ) Which salmon [' smn] avec un 'l' muet.

---32 ) Sinusitis [sn'stis]or a sinus [ sns]; pl. sines [ 'sniz]. Pas simple and it hurts ! A sinus infection.

---33 )Water doesn't boil [bl]....neither does a right angle ; ajout ou réponse réduite négative : reprise de l'aux. Non plus.
Affirm.: faire resurgir l'aux.de départ . - I love English > So do they.
-I would love to be in England -> So would he . Aussi

---34 )While (tandis que ) it was crossing > while crossing : while + gerund./ While feeling...

Present perfect : constat, bilan = has cost . Oh !
Nous l'avons imaginé "guéri" , one-armed, now.

The foolish habit of scratching ...cost (preterite; one day)

So, you'll answer the complete sentence with...his arm.

=
It should never be a mother , should it ? (falling tag : intonation descendante)

---38 ) On la voit pondre = Laying an egg; to lay, laid, laid. ( 'fresh laid eggs 'sur certaines fermes) One at a time ,please !

--That ostrich : démonstratif / péjoratif : comme ' Look at that !

And so on ...

Get better, quick !

Coucou ma douce Violet,

Me concernant j'aimerais bien une deuxième version si possible, j'ai trouvé cet exercice vraiment rigolo. Voili voilou.

Tu as dû sursauter sur ta chaise.

See you very soon!

Bonjour Violet

A bientôt
