Changer les choses/Thème
Message de violet91 posté le 16-06-2012 à 00:00:45 (S | E | F)

Hello dear all ,

That British touch.
.

Now, enjoy translating it as well as you can and with your usual enthusiasm. See you.

Correction autour du 2 Juillet.

Hello dear Violet,

It was a very difficult work of vocabulary, I am not sure about this translation.

Change the things

They remained sat on a bench of Monceau's Park for a while without speaking.
It was a very promising day in the begin of the summer; some fluffy clouds crossed the sky pushed by a light breeze, at all times the wind could drop and the sky get clear until become wholly blue but it was to late now, the sun will be set by them.
For the youngest beings, that will be the possibility of a meeting by chance, secret, behind the rampart of the prams, with for only witnes, the babies and the child-minders.
But they were both mature and neither one nor the other wasn't tempted by cherishing the illusion to own a lost youth. Even if he was more handsome than he would like to believe it, with his silky moustache like ancient, sign of good morality and if she was more beautiful than her mirror never said her. Humility and desillusionment gave them something in common, although a distance of one meter and fifty of green metal separeted them, they could be regarded as married peolpe who were going to ressemble each other.
Some pigeons like old grey tennis balls rolled near their feet without bringing their attention.
From time to time, each one looked at his watch, but never at his neighbour.
For both, that lonely and peacefully moment had been limited.
They will never talk to the other if two young louts didn't come there, one of them carried a booming transistor stuffed on his shoulder, the other one kicked in the direction of the scared pigeons. One of his movments met a target by accident and the teenagers went on their way in the racket of pop music letting the pigeon totter in the alley.

Hello dear Violet,

Thanks for this new theme, presumably the last one before the holidays....
Here is my try:

Would they change the way things go ?

They remained seated on a bench of Monceau's park for a while without talking. It was a day filled with promises at the beginning of summer. Some curly clouds, flew across the sky, pushed by a light breeze; all the time, the wind could fall and the sky clear , become wholly blue; but it was too late now, the sun would be set until then.

For younger people, that would have been an opportunity for a chance meeting, secret, behind the long ramparts of the prams, with ,for only witnesses, babies and nannies. But they were both middle aged, and neither one nor other were tempted by entertaining the illusion of a lost youth, even if he was more handsome that he would believe, with his silky and old-style moustache, sign of good morality, and if she was more beautiful than what her mirror never said her.
Humility and disenchantment gave them something in common; although a distance of five feet and eleven inches of green metal separated them, they would have been taken for married people who had ended up looking alike.
Some pigeons, like old grey tennis ball, were rolling at their feet without drawing their attention .From time to time, each one looked at his own watch, but never at his neighbour .For both of them, this moment, full of solitude and peace, was limited.

They would never have spoken to each other if two young boors hadn't come there;one of them was carrying a booming transistor nonchalantly put on his shoulder, while the other was kicking towards some frightened pigeons. One of his movements met a target at random and the teenagers went on their way with the thunder of the pop music, leaving the pigeon to stagger on the path.

HelloViolet
Here my work !
Would they change the course of life?

Sat on a bench in the Parc Monceau, they remained for a long time without talking to each other. It was a day full of hope at early summer; white fleecy clouds were crossing the sky, pushed away by a small zephir;at any time the wind might drop and the sky clear to become completely blue ;but it was too late now, the sun would have set in the meantime. For younger people, it might have been the opportunity of a chance meeting, secret behind the long rampart of prams with only babies and nannies like witnesses. But they were both of them middle-aged and neither of them was tempted to cherish the illusion of possessing a lost youth even if he was more handsome than he wanted to believe it, with his silky old-fashioned moustache, a sign of good morality, and even if she was prettier than her mirror never told her. Humility and disillusion gave them something on common; although a distance of five feet( about )separated them, they could have been married people who were going to look alike. Pigeons like old, grey tennis balls rolled at their feet without catching their attention. From time to time each one looked at his watch but never at his neighbour. For both of them this break of solitude and peace was limited....
...They would never have spoken to each other if two louts had not come there; one of them carried a thundering transistor on his shoulder, the other kicked out at the alarmed pigeons. One of his kicks hit a random target and the teenagers went on their way in a blaring pop music, leaving the bird lurching along the path.

Bonjour, voici ma contribution.
Maintenant je vais lire celle des autres.
Merci pour ces exercices.

They stayed on a bench for a long moment in the park monceau, without exchanging a word.
It was a day full of promises, in the begining of the summer.
SOme clouds, were crossing the sky, pushed by a slight wind.
The wind could stop any time and the sky become completely blue, but it was too late now, the sun would have gone to sleep by then.
For younger people, it could have been a random meeting, secret, behind the long wall of baby carriages, and as only witnesses, babies and their baby sitters.
BUt they were both of older ages and neither of them were tempted to believe in a second youth, even though he was more handsom than he thought, with his silky moustache, like old times, sign of good morality, and she was nicer than her mirror told her.
Humility and desillusion were things they had in common.
Although a distance of a meter 50 cm long green steel separated them, they could have mistakenly been taken for a married couple looking alike.
Pigeons, like old grey tennis balls, were rolling next to their feet, without drawing any attention.
From time to time, each of them were looking at their watch, without looking at their neighbour.
For both of them, that moment of solitude and peace was limited. (...)
THey would have never spoken to each other, if two young apes hadn't come by.
One of them was carrying a screaming radio onto his shoulder, the other one was kicking towards scared pigeons.
One of his gesture met randomly a target and the teenagers went on in the noise of pop music, leaving a dizzy pigeon in the alley.

It was that kind of day, full of promises, at the beginning of the summer; wavy like clouds were crossing the sky, pushed away by a light breeze; all the time could the wind vanish and the sky get clear and turn all blue; but it was too late now, the sun would have set down by then.
For younger people, that could have been an opportunity to meet each other by chance, secretly, hidden behind the long barrier of prams, with babies and nannies as sole witnesses. Humility and disenchantment made them have something in common; though they were separated by a one meter and a half distance made of green metal , they could have been taken for two married people who had ended up looking like each other. They had been sitting on a bench in the Parc Monceau for quite a while without talking to each other. It was a promising day at the beginning of summer ; fleecy clouds were fluttering about in the sky pushed around by a light breeze ; at any moment could the wind come down, the sky clear off and become entirely blue. But it was too late now, the sun would have set down before then.
For younger people this could have been a chance and secret encounter, behind the long line of prams, the babies and the nannies being the sole witnesses
But they were both middle-aged and neither of them was tempted to pretend they were still in possession of their lost youth, even if He was more handsome than he thought, with his silky old style moustache, a sign of high moral standards and She was prettier than her mirror would show. Humility and disillusion made them share something and even if they were separated by one meter of green metal, they could have been a married couple looking alike.
Some pigeons, resembling old grey tennis balls, were rolling on the ground without drawing their attention. From time to time, each looked at their watches but never at their neighbor. For them both this moment of solitude and peace was limited..
They would not have spoken to each other if two young rude boys had not come over, one of them carrying on his shoulder a booming radio set, the other one kicking away towards the scared pigeons. By accident, one of his shots hit its target and the two youngsters wenton walking in the deafening roar of the pop music leaving the tottering pigeon in the alley.

Hello violet!

Could they change the course of things?
They were sitting on a bench in the Park Monceau for quite a while without speaking to each other. It was an early summer's day, full of promise, with big woolly clouds, blown across the sky by a light breeze; the wind might have died down at any moment, leaving the sky empty and completely blue, but it was already too late, the sun would have gone down, by then.
For younger people, it might have been an occasion for a chance encounter, hidden, behind the long barrier of prams, with only babies and their nannies as witnesses. But they were both middle-aged and neither was tempted to cherish an illusion of possessing a lost youth, even though he was more attractive than he could have imagined, with his old fashioned silky moustache, a sign of respectability, and she was prettier than her looking glass had ever told her.
Modesty and desenchantment gave them something in common. Though they were separated by five feet of green metal, they could have been taken for a married couple who had come to look like each other. Pigeons, like old grey tennis balls, were rolling around at their feet, without attracting their attention. From time to time, each one looked at his or her own watch, but never at each other. For both of them, this moment of peace and solitude was limited.[...]

They would never have talked to each other if two young louts hadn't passed by. One of them had a thunderous radio slung over his shoulder while the other one was kicking at the startled pigeons. By chance, one of the kicks hit a target but the teenagers just continued on their way in a blare of pop-music, leaving the pigeon reeling on the path.[...]

Thank you again for this text,
Have a nice Sunday!

Dear Violet,

Return to normal

They remained seated on a bench in the Parc Monceau during a long time silently. It was a promising day in the biginning of the Summer, foamy clouds crossed the sky pushed by a light breeze at any time the wind could die away and the sky get clear to begin entirely blue but it was too late now, the sun would be set until then.

For youngest people that would be the oportunity of a casual meeting, secret, behind the long rampart of prams with for only witnesses the babies and the nanies of the children. But they were both of middle-age and neither of them were tempted by the idea to fondle the illusion to own a lost youth even if he was more beautiful than he wanted it with his silken mustachio-whiskers of old style, sign of good morality and if she was prettier than her mirror said never to her. The humbleness and the disenchantment gave to them something in common though a metre and half apart of green metal separated them they would have be accounted for married people who had finished to resemble. Pigeons like old grey tennis balls rolled at their feet without attracting their attention. From time to time each looked at his watch but never at his neighbouring. For both that moment of their loneliness and peace was limited (...). They never would been spoken if two young louts weren't pass thereby ; one of them carried a transistor radio booming thrown on his shoulder , the other towards scared pigeons. One of his movements met with a target at random and the adolescents followed their way in the tumult of the pop music, leaving the pigeon staggering in the walk (...).

Many thanks for this new test and your explanations all through this year. Have good holidays !

Hello dear all, ......Beauté à l'état pur ! The sound has come back ! Lien internet

I am awfully sorry , but this will be done in rush hours !...Just guess ! I am getting all sorts of things ready for this coming Saturday : our departure to England For a week, mind you...but this is a very special trip : taking Kiddie One to where I love going and living.

Je me suis volontairement un peu écartée de l'original ...in the course of my imagination.

.....................Would they change the course of life ? ................

They sat on a bench for a good while in the Parc Monceau without uttering a word to each other (addressing each other). It seemed to be a day for any blessing ( full of promises)as it usually is* in early summer ; white fleecy clouds moved gently across the sky, brushed (against) by a touch of breeze ; at any instant , the wind might drop and the sky turn clear into perfect blue ; still, it was too late now, the sun would have set by then.
Had they been younger , they could have caught the opportunity of a haphazard (chance) encounter , privy ( in its secrecy) behind the long ( never- ending) barrier of prams with just babies and nurses to witness . But both of them were middle-aged and neither was tempted to cherish the faintest idea of living a lost youth again , even though he was more handsome than he had come to believe, with his silky old style moustache , a mark of good manners, and she was prettier than her mirror ever told her. Humility and disenchantment gave them something in common ; although a five foot long strip of green metal separated them , they could have well been taken for a married couple that had ended up looking like each other. Pigeons like old grey tennis balls came rolling around their feet without drawing their attention. Now and then, both would, in turn , look at their watches , but never at each other . That moment of solitude and peace was to be limited for those two .[...]
Never would they have started a conversation if two silly young louts had not come up that way : the former* carrying a booming radio flung over his shoulder, the latter* giving kicks at the scared pigeons. One of his shots( moves) hit a target at random and the teen-aged boys kept on walking in the hullabaloo ( blaring) of pop music , leaving the pigeon behind* staggering on the alley .

* I am adding that bit on purpose.
* Just for the pleasure of words instead of : one ..and the other .
* Forgetting all about the pigeon.( if he ever noticed the harm he had done!)

Hello dear friends and have a lovely sunny day !

Still in the heat of the battle !

From 'Two gentle people' by the author himself.

They sat on a bench in the Parc Monceau for a long time without speaking to one another . It was a hopeful day of early summer with a spray of white clouds lapping* across the sky in front of a small breeze : at any moment the wind might drop and the sky become empty and entirely blue, but it was too late now - the sun would have set first.
In younger people it might have been a day for a chance encounter - secret behind the long barrier of perambulators with only babies and nurses in sight . But they were both of them middled- aged, and neither was inclined* to cherish an illusion of possessing a lost youth, though he was better looking than he believed, with his silky old- world moustache, a badge of good behaviour, and she was prettier than her looking -glass ever told her. Modesty and disillusion gave them something in common ; though they were separated by five feet of green metal they could have been a married couple who had grown to resemble each other. Pigeons like old grey tennis balls rolled unnoticed* around their feet. They each occasionally looked at a watch though never at one another. For both of them this period of solitude and peace was limited.[..]
They would never have spoken to each other if two teen-aged louts had not passed by, one with a blaring radio flung over his shoulder , the other kicking out at the preoccupied pigeons. One of his kicks found a random mark , and on they went in a din of pop, leaving the pigeon lurching on the path.

* lapping : great > I could not use it ...
* inclined : " : just the same.
* unnoticed : " that was the idea I never thought of.
Sorry again for my short visit . I'll be back tonight after some time in the heart of Paris . See you then.

Hello,

Thank for you work!
It's always a pleasure to read your translations and pieces of advice and others even if I was busy with my school work.
Now,I am on holiday...
I am rather happy with my translation.
I think I can read or write in English more easily than before.
Have a nice journey with a lot of sun and amuse yourself!

Hello young lemagemasque,

I thank you very much for joining the ' club' when you did and being so thrilled each time you translated and read my entire corrections. I am glad you think your English has improved and become more fluent : I'll say it is amazingly 'full of promise' too. Congratulations for that and also for being a delicate person who expresses his pleasure and gratitude.

Two remarks just for you... which can be useful for other members, though.
In your case, you should have written 'your pieces ( or different pieces )of advice. Or for advising us this or that.
2 ) Have a nice holiday / Have fun / Enjoy yourself are the proper expressions to wish somebody a good time. Same to you, dear and see you later.

Good afternoon,

Thank you for your reply, I edited my message.

#2 was about 'Amuse yourself'?
If so, it exists.
I have seen that word in the summary of 'Murder on the Orient Express', Agatha Christie, CollinsChildren'sBooks, 1995 :
'Hercule Poirot sat in the dining car, amusing himself by observing his fellow passengers on the crowded luxury train.' (maybe the next extract to translate) and in a diction(n)ary (Wordreference).
Or you mean that doesn't make any sense in the context?
If I have taught you something, I will be pleased.
Goodbye!

Hello boy,

A.Christie loved writing and Hercule Poirot is a fictitious French speaking Belgian detective, as we all know. ( look for a previous work I posted last year called ' Une sémillante sexagénaire')
Sure , to amuse oneself IS English ...but, you know, if you happened to say to anyone ' Amuse yourself, dear ' , he or she would have fun .( I myself just smiled). You wouldn't use it in the imperative form. A.Christie , like many great and witty writers who travelled all over the world and found Paris and France wonderful , was fond of words coming from Latin or Greek ( education)...or genuine French words to be in the fashion and show some mannerism. ' Poirot amused himself...' fits perfectly to what I am explaining to you . A bit ' fussy, snobbish and ridiculous. Sorry.
It is still the case in everyday life when you address upper class people. I can do that to amuse myself with friends from Oxford and Cambridge ...and I bet we'll have a laugh together : they know I can be teasing them.
Young lemagemasque,if you wish to sound a bit posh when speaking English - first think of the word you are going to use ( To specialists, a dictionary like Wordreference is not a proper reference , by the way .) When you reach a higher level,or even now, you can use Oxford Concise , for instance , and a quite serious bilingual paper dictionary : you'll learn far better words to express yourself in standard English ( Robert and Collins, Harrap's...) . Or you like being a bijou and sound so chic, don't you ?
Have a lovely time on your holiday and do enjoy yourself . See you . So, bye !

................. Hello dear all,
Je ne promets pas ...I'll write you a note , if ...in case. That would mean I would come back to my work when back home , after my English week.

.............. Have a very good night. See you tomorrow, anyway.

Bonsoir dear friends ,

If you are already on holiday somewhere , enjoy yourselves ; if you are not , have a pleasant time too : there is always something nice to do . Why not rest and read English books we worked on , together ? And see Ken Loach's latest ,' The Angels'share' which is really hilarious and so humane ? You'll love it and learn much about popular pure Scottish English or English Scottish ?

See you soon ...just paying an expected visit to the Queen ..or so !

Good evening , dear friends ,

I hope you are all well and happy . Back as you might have seen on my status as it appears clearly ! A great week , that was ...et voilà 'part of my little following' mordue par la fièvre de l'anglais et emballée par l' Angleterre.

Have a good meal. See you.

There I am , at last ! Hello dear friends

Shall I be forgiven ? I hope so, because I have been kept so busy until last night ...and start again tomorrow night too.

1 ) Ils restèrent assis ; they sat . Pretérit far too logical.
---Each of them sitting on each end of the bench.

2 ) A bench (benches ['bniz] : un banc . ( origine française). Deck-chairs sont payantes in parks ( for a small fee, tarif).
----The bank : la rive . The River bank.> The Em'bankment ( The City) and name of an underground station, as well. Lien internet

......... (in GB)......... ..in Parc Monceau, for instance)

3 ) For a good while = for quite a while = for a long time : durée ' for' .A moment peut signifier ' un instant'. # A spell of time , moment encadré, destiné à être interrompu comme des ' spells of sunshine': des éclaircies.

4 ) Parc Monceau : lui préférer sa 'nationalité' . Nous disons bien ' Hyde park' ou Central Park ( NY). G. Greene, amateur de Paris , le pratique . On peut trouver Monceau Park.
Capricieux de toute façon : ex: the Champs Elysées, The Concorde , The Latin Quarters, Eiffel Tower...

5 ) To utter a word = articuler la moindre parole, ouvrir la bouche pour parler ( silent people). To address somebody : s'adresser à qqn. Parfois agressif :
---Are you addressing me( on that tone) ?
---' Who, me ?' comme a dit un piéton sur le trottoir londonien récemment !-
---To speak to : le plus simple ( G.Greene était journaliste )avant d'être écrivain).

6 ) Each other porte sur 2 personnes en état de réciprocité. One another sur 3 et plus.

- Those two didn't know each other till they finally made acquaintance.

7 ) Hopeful/ hopefully ; full of hope/ full of despair ; full of promise(s).
A blessed day A very special (unique) day! -----( May) God bless you, Sneezy !

# hopeless/ hopelessly > a breach of promise : une rupture, une séparation. (to split : se séparer from to split : se fêler, se fissurer).

CBBC Newsround | THE BEATLES | When did they split up?
news.bbc.co.uk/.../the_beatles/.../1684982.stm -
When did they split up? They split when Paul McCartney said he was leaving the band in April 1970 and on 31 December 1970, the band officially split. To break up = to split up.

8 ) A spray of ( clouds , from sea, of drops ( gouttelettes) ...comme vaporisé.

9 ) Fleecy ['flsi] : moutonneux , comme la Toison d' Or - 'The Golden Fleece' de Jason. Woolly : laineux. Cotton wool : c'est la ouate !

.............Lien internet
( 4mn)

11 ) To brush ( against) : effleurer . To stroke (stroked), to give a stroke, to caress : caresser.

12 ) A touch of breeze( = a small breeze) like a touch of humour, a touch of foreign accent . A touch of class, surtout !

Cf. ' The Merchant of Venice' ' Macbeth' ...), dormir et la balade en ' punt ' ,a narrow boat , avec my own kiddie when he was little .

Il y a une grosse faute de grammaire et orth dans le reportage: ' the modern chapel with ( it's) its (of course) wooden panels .

And what a shame (pity) ! Il ne montre pas, non plus, le very trendy famous ' Dirty Duck' ( not 'the Swan ' this time ) where you can meet actors , actresses, drama students and lots of eccentric people ( as I can be sometimes ) and be served local draught cider (cidre brut au tonneau)[' sd] if you happen to be treated by a true gentleman or else, on the lovely terrace looking onto the river Avon and the theatre ( or inside).

Not yet ...dear

Although not used to hearing or reading 'hullo' As in addition to hello, halloo, hallo, hollo, hullo and (rarely) hillo also exist as variants or related words, the word can be spelt using any of all five vowels.

- Now it was too late . légère emphase : on attaque / rupture.
- It was now too late : avalé par l'avant et l'après : emphase de too late.
- It was too late now. 'Place forte '. Emphase : désormais , aucun changement possible ( sauf si...).

15 ) Sunrise # sunset.

The walls of the Castle.( 's 'remplacé par l'accent circonflexe en français , trace de l'ancien français : castle, castel*, castelet, château / hotel, hostel/ hostellerie/ hospital , hôpital/ forest , forêt...

17 ) In younger people = in younger people's minds. ' les plans' de la jeunesse.
......J'ai choisi de faire un rappel d'un fameux thème ' d'antan' avec ces effets stylistiques : le subjonctif non périphrastique , remplaçant if they had ...
Ex: Eussent-ils été plus jeunes = Had they been younger
'In younger people'...

18 ) A chance encounter = a random encounter = a haphazard encounter .
They can or can't notice it. pas ' opportunity' ni 'lucky' (fs. Chanceuse, bienvenue)
Good luck # hard luck ! # by chance, at random : au hasard.

Push chairs : poussettes/ wheeling chairs : fauteuils roulants.

21 ) Neither of( + pron.pers.cmplment) them / neither of us...: aucun des deux, d' entre nous...Neither ...nor : ni..ni..; either ...or : soit...soit...

...Reaching 11.50pm and return of my guests : relatives and kiddies. I must close , here. See you tomorrow night.
...Have a very good night, with lovely dreams, dear all.
