Bonjour!

Il me dit seulement :

- Ah ! tu es là...
Et il me prit par la main. Mais il se tourmenta encore :

-Tu as eu tort. Tu auras de la peine. J'aurai l'air d'être mort et ce ne sera pas vrai...

Moi je me taisais.

- Tu comprends. C'est trop loin. Je ne peux pas emporter ce corps-là. C'est trop lourd.

Moi je me taisais.

Moi je me taisais.

Thank you notrepere for the new part of this lovely story.

This night I didn't see him get under way. He had slipped away silently. When I succeeded in joining him he was walking with at a rapid pace. He only said to me :
-Ah, you're there.
And he took me by the hand. But he was still tormented :
-You shouldn't have come. You 'll have sorrow. I'll seem to have died and it won't be true.
I kept silent
-You understand. It's too far. I cannot take this body. It's too heavy.
I kept silent .
But it will be like an old abandoned shell.
It's not sad the old shells.
He was discouraged a little.
But he still made an effort :
-It will be nice, you know. I, too, shall look at stars.
All the stars will be wells with a rusted pulley. All the stars will pour me a drink.
I kept silent .
-It will be so kind ! You will have five hundred million bells. I will have five hundred million fountains.
And he was also keeping silent because he was crying. He hesitated still a little then he was raised. He took a step. I couldn't move.
There was just a yellow flash close to his ankle. He remained a moment without moving. He didn't yell. He fell slowly as fall a tree. That didn't even make a noise because of the sand.
It's quite a great mystery. For you who also love the little prince like me, nothing of the universe does similar if somewhere, we don't know where, a sheep that we don't know, has, yes or not, eaten a rose.
So when a child comes towards you, if he laughs, if he has golden hair, if he doesn't answer when he is questioned, you guess well who he is. Then be kind ! Don't leave me so sad : write to me that he returned...

Hello notrepere,
thank you for this exercise.
Some expressions are difficult to translate such as 'se mettre en route' or 'ça ne fit même pas'.

That night I didn't see him get going. He got away without making a sound. When I succeeded in catching up with him, he was walking with a determined and fast step. He only said to me:
-Ah, you are there...
And he took me by the hand. But he was still anxious:
-You might be wrong if you would come. You will feel sad. I will look as if I were dead and that won't be true...
I said nothing.
-You understand. It's too far.I can't carry this body with me. It is too heavy.
I said nothing.
But it will be like an old abandoned shell. There is nothing sad about old shells...
He was a little discouraged. But he made one more effort:
-It will be nice, you know. I, too, will look at the stars. All the stars will be wells with a rusty pulley. All the stars will pour to drink for me...
I said nothing.
-That will be so funny! You will have five hundred million bells, I will have five hundred million springs...
And he said nothing too, because he was crying.
He still hesitated a little, then he got up. He took a step. I could not move.
There was nothing but a yellow flash close to his ankle. He remained motionless for a little while. He didn't shout. He fell as softly as a tree falls. There was not even any sound, because of the sand.
Here is a great mystery. For you who also love the little prince, like for me, nothing in the universe is alike if somewhere, from nowhere, a sheep that we don't know, has eaten a rose...
Then, if a kid comes to you, if he laughs, if he has golden hair and who refuses to answer questions, you will know who he is.
So, be nice with me! Don't leave me so sad: write to me soon that he has come back...

 Hello dear

That night I didn’t see him leave. He had slipped away without a noise. When I managed to catch up with him he was walking at a fast and determined pace. He just told me:
-Oh! You’re here…
And he took my hand. But he worried again:
-You shouldn’t have come. You’ll be upset. I’ll look as if I were dead but it won’t be true…
I didn’t say anything.
-You understand. It is too far away. I can’t take this body with me. It’s too heavy.
I didn’t say anything.
-But it will look like an old abandoned shell. Abandoned shells are not sad, are they?
He was a little discouraged. But he still made an effort:
-It will be nice, you know. I will look at the stars too. Each star will look like a well with a rusty pulley. Each star will pour me something to drink…
I didn’t say anything.
-It will be such fun! You’ll have five hundred million bells, I’ll have five hundred million fountains…
And he stopped talking too, because he was crying…
[…]
He still hesitated a little, then he stood up. He took a step. I couldn’t even move.
There was nothing but a yellow flash near his ankle. He stood still for a while. He didn’t shout. He slowly fell down in the same way as a tree does. It did not even make a noise, due to the sand.
It is quite a big mystery. For you who love the little prince as well, like for me, nothing in the universe is the same if somewhere, we don’t know where, a sheep we never met has, be true or not, eaten a rose.
[…]
If a child then comes towards you, if he laughs, if he has got golden hair, if he doesn’t answer when you ask a question, you will certainly guess who he is. In that case please be nice! Don’t leave me alone and sad: drop me a quick note saying he is back…

Thank you so much!

Bonjour NP,

That night, I didn’t see him set off. He had silently fled. When I managed to catch him up, he was walking briskly, determined. He only told me :
- Oh ! There you are..
And he took my hand. But he was still worried :
- You are wrong. You will be sad. I’ll look as if I were dead but that won’t be true
I remained silent
- You know, it’s too far away, I can’t be loaded with my body. It is too heavy
I remained silent
-That will be like an old rejected shell. Old shells are not sad…
He lost heart for a while. But tried again :
- It will be nice you know. I’ll look at the stars too. All the stars will be wells with a rusty pulley. All the stars will pour me a drink…
I remained silent
It will be great fun ! You will have five hundred million bells, I’ll have five hundred million springs..
He stopped talking too, because he was crying…
He still hesitated a little, then he rose, took a step. I couldn’t move
Just a yellow flash close to his ankle.. He remained still for a while. He did not shout. He fell down softly as a tree does. It did not even make a noise owing to the sand.
This is a deep mystery. For those like you, who love the Little Prince, as for me, nothing will ever be the same in the universe if somewhere, you don’t know where, a lamb, you don’t even know, does or does not eat a rose…
Then, if a child comes to you, if he laughs, if he has got golden hair, if he does not answer your questions, you will guess who he is.
So, please be kind ! Don’t let me so unhappy : write quickly to tell me he is back …

Thank you for this lovely story more difficult to translate than it may seem..

Hello dear notrepere!

I think it is high time I looked after our Little Prince...

That night, I did not see him set off. He had slipped away silently. When I succeeded in catching up with him, he was walking at a brisk and resolute pace. He only said :
« Ah ! Here you are... »
And he took my hand in his. But he was still worrying :
« You should not have come. It will make you suffer. I will look as if I were dead, and it will not be true... »
I said nothing.
« You understand, it is too far away. I cannot take this body with me. It is too heavy. »
I said nothing.
« But it will be like an old abandoned shell. There is nothing sad about old shells... »
He got a little disheartened. But he still made an effort :
« You know, it will be nice. I will watch the stars too. Every star will be a well with its rusty pulley. Each star will pour me something to drink... »
I said nothing.
« That will be so amusing ! You will have five hundred million small bells, I will have five hundred million springs... »
And he stopped talking as well because he was crying...
[…]
He still hesitated a little, then got up again. He took a step. I could not move.
There was nothing but a flash of yellow light close to his ankle. He stayed motionless for a while. He did not cry out. He fell gently as a tree does. Even without any sound, because of the sand..

Here is a great mystery. For you who also love the little prince, as for me, nothing can be the same in the universe whether somewhere, nobody knows where, a sheep we have never met has eaten a rose or not...
[…]
If one day a child comes towards you, if he is laughing, if he has golden hair, if he does not answer when asked a question, you will probably guess who he is. So, please, be nice enough not to leave me so sad: write me quickly that he has come back...

Thank you and Happy Easter

Hello notrepere !
Thanks for this new translation. It wasn't very easy.
I post my proposition, even if I'm not very satisfied with it ...

That night, I didn’t see him leave. He had escaped without any noises. When I managed to rejoin him, he was walking determined. He just told me :
- Ah ! You’re here …
He then took me the hand. But he went on worrying :
- You were wrong. You’ll get sorrow. I’ll look like dead and it won’t be true …
I didn’t say anything.
- You understand. It’s too far. I can’t take that body with me. It’s too heavy.
I didn’t say anything.
- But it’ll be like an old abandoned bark. Old barks aren’t sad …
He got a little discouraged. But he tried again :
- It’ll be kind, you know. I will also look at the stars. All the stars will be wells, with a rusty pulley. All the stars will give some water to drink…
I didn’t say anything.
- It will be so funny ! You’ll have five hundred million of bells, I’ll have five hundred million of fountains … And he stopped talking, because he was crying…
[…]
He hesitated, and stood up. He took a step. I couldn’t move.
There wasn’t anything except a yellow lightning close to his ankle. He staid immobile for a moment. He didn’t shout. He felt softly as a tree falls. It didn’t even make a noise, due to the sand.
Here’s a huge mystery. For you, who also like the little prince, as for me, nothing of the universe is similar if somewhere, we don’t know where, a sheep which we don’t know, ate, or not, a rose…
[…]
If a child them comes to you, if he laughs, if he has golden blond hair, if he doesn’t answer when you ask him a question, I’m sure you’ll recognize him. So, be kind ! Don’t let me so sad : write me as soon as possible that he has come back…

See you !

Hello, and many thanks!

That night, I didn't notice when he set off. He had slipped away silently.
When I eventually caught up with him, he was walking steadily at a swift pace.
"Oh, here you are" was the only thing he said to me. Then he took me by the hand. But he still sounded worried:
You shouldn't have come. It will make you sad. I will look dead, and it won't be true...
I remained silent.
You understand. It's too far. I can't take this body along with me. It's too heavy.
I remained silent.
But it will be like an old abandoned. There's nothing sad about old shells.
He lost heart for a moment. But he made one more effort:
It will be sweet, you know. I too will be watching the stars.
All the stars will be wells with rusty pulleys. All the stars will pour water for me to drink...
I remained silent.
It will be so much fun! You will have 5 hundred million bells and I will have 5 hundred million fountains...
And he fell silent as well, for he was crying...
[...]
He hesitated for a short while, then stood up. He took a step. I couldn't move.
There was nothing but a yellow lightning flash, close to his ankle.
He stood still for a moment. He didn't let out a cry. He gently fell like a tree. It didn't even make a sound, due to the sand.
And this is one very deep mystery indeed.
To you who also love the little prince, as to me, nothing in the universe remains unchanged depending on whether, somewhere - we don't know where - a sheep - that we've never met - has or hasn't grazed on a rose...
[...]
So, if a child comes up to you; if he's laughing; if he has hair of gold; if he doesn't answer your questions, you will easily guess who he is. Then, be kind, won't you? Don't let me be so very sad: promptly write to me that he has returned...

Hello notrepere,

If the weather in U.S. is like ours it isn't astonishing !
Perhaps a good grog can help you. A recipe with or without alcohol :
With alcohol
- 2 cl de Rhum agricultural (white or amber)
- 1/2 citron lemon or lime
- A little of cinnamon in powder.
- 2 teaspoons of sweet honey
- Hot water

Without alcohol
Press a lemon.
Join 2-3 teaspoons of sweet honey.
Pour hot water but not boiled to keep vitamins.
Good recovery !

Bonjour

Merci !! I'm feeling much better today. The cold started on Tuesday and I felt rather poorly Tuesday through Thursday.

That night I did not see him set out on his way(1). He got away from me(2) without making a sound. When I succeeded in catching up with him, he was walking along with a quick and resolute step(3). He said to me merely:
"Ah! You are there..."
And he took me by the hand. But he was still worrying(4).
"It was wrong of you to come. You will suffer. I shall look as if I were dead; and that will not be true..."
I said nothing.
"You understand...It is too far. I cannot carry(5) this body with me. It is too heavy."
I said nothing.
"But it will be like an old abandoned shell. There is nothing sad about old shells..."
I said nothing.
He was a little discouraged. But he made one more effort:
"You know, it will be very nice. I, too, shall look at the stars. All the stars will be wells with a rusty pulley. All the stars will pour out fresh water for me to drink..."
I said nothing.
"That will be so amusing! You will ahve five hundred million little bells, and I shall have five hundred million springs of fresh water..."
And he too said nothing more, because he was crying...
[...]
He still hesitated a little; then he got up. He took one step. I could not move.
There was nothing there but a flash of yellow close to his ankle. He reamined motionless for an instant. He did not cry out. He fell as gently as a tree falls.(6) There was not even any sound, because of the sand.
[...]
Here then, is a great mystery. For you who also love the little prince, and for me, nothing in the universe can be the same if somewhere, we do not know where, a sheep that we never saw has -- yes or no? -- eaten a rose...
[...]
Then, if a little man appears who laughs, who has golden hair and who refuses to answer questions, you will know who he is. If this should happen, please comfort me. Send me word that he has come back.
---------------------------------------
(1) I find this turn of phrase strange. The usual expression in English is to "be on your way" or to "go on your way".
(2) "To get away from" a plus le sens de "s'échapper" plutôt que "partir discrètement"
(3) "at a quick and resolute pace" is better because of the word "resolute" which describes more the "pace" rather than the "step".
(4) use of the progressive tense is uncommon with stative verbs such as 'worry'. It is better to use the expression "to be worried".
(5) "carry" is not the best translation since his body is not a piece of luggage. Plus, we don't say "carry something with me". We say "take something with me".
(6) Most trees do not fall "gently". I think the image that SE is trying to convey is that he fell the way a tree falls.

Traduction de Richard Howard :

That night I didn't see him leave. He got away(1) without making a sound. When I managed to catch up with him, he was walking fast, with determination. All he said was "Ah, you're here." And he took my hand. But he was still anxious. "You were wrong to come. You'll suffer. I'll look as if I'm dead, and that won't be true..."
I said nothing.
"You understand. It's too far. I can't take this body with me. It's too heavy."
I said nothing.
"But it'll be like an old abandoned shell. There's nothing sad about an old shell..."
I said nothing.
He was a little disheartened now. But he made one more effort.
"It'll be nice, you know. I'll be looking at the stars, too. All the stars will be wells with a rusty pulley. All the stars will pour out water for me to drink..."
I said nothing.
"And it'll be fun! You'll have five-hundred million little bells; I'll have five-hundred million springs of fresh water..."
And he, too, said nothing, because he was weeping....
[...]
He hesitated a little longer, then he stood up. He took a step. I couldn't move.
There was nothing but a yellow flash close to his ankle. He remained motionless for an instant. He didn't cry out. He fell gently, the way a tree falls. There wasn't even a sound, because of the sand.
[...]
It's all a great myster. For you, who love the little prince, too. As for me, nothing in the universe can be the same if somewhere, no one knows where, a sheep we never saw has or has not eaten a rose...
[...]
Then if a child comes to you, if he laughs, if he has golden hair, if he doesn't answer your questions, you'll know who he is. If this should happen, be kind! Don't let me go on being so sad: Send word immediately that he's come back...
--------------------------------------
(1) This has the same meaning as Woods' translation, but it isn't as problematic because he doesn't say "got away from me".

Ma proposition :

That night I didn't see him set off. He had slipped away silently. When I finally caught up to him, he was walking at a quick and determined pace. He said only:
Oh, you are here...
And he took my hand. But he still seemed uneasy:
-You shouldn't have come. You will be sad. It will seem as if I have died and that won't be true...
I remained silent.
- You understand. It's too far. I can't take this body with me. It's too heavy.
I remained silent.
- But it will be like an old abandonned shell. An old shell isn't sad...
He seemed a bit disheartened. But he made another effort:
-It will be nice, you know. I, too, will look at the stars. All of the stars will be like wells with rusty pulleys. All of the stars will pour me a drink...
I remained silent.
- It will be such fun! You will have five hundred million bells, I will have five hundred million fountains...
And he, too, fell silent because he was crying...
[...]
He lingered a moment longer, then he got up. He took a step. I couldn't move.
There was nothing but a yellow flash near his ankle. He was motionless for an instant. He did not cry out. He fell softly the way a tree falls. There wasn't even a sound because of the sand.
[...]
It's all a great mystery. To me and to those who also love the little prince, nothing in the world will be the same if somewhere, in a faraway place, some sheep we've never even met might have (yes or no?) eaten a rose...
[...]
So, if a child comes up to you, if he is laughing, if he has golden hair, if he doesn't respond when questioned, you may well guess who he is. Then, won't you be so kind? Don't let me be sad any longer! Write to me at once and tell me he has returned...

-------------------------------------------------------------------
- réussir à + infinitif = succeed in + gerund
Ici, ça veut dire "You shouldn't have come".
Me?
- Tu comprends = Tu sais...tu comprends (You know...you understand)
- emporter ce corps = take this body - several people chose "that" instead of "this" which wouldn't be correct in the context. A distinction is not always made between this/that in French, so you need to know which one to use. There are several exercises on this site that can help you review this concept. Lien internet

- une vieille écorce abandonnée = Many of you used the word 'bark' which is one possible translation, but that, of course, makes no sense in English. What we are looking for is a word that refers to his appearance (apparence) = 'shell' makes the most sense. Lien internet

- un éclair jaune = In English, an "eclair" is "un gâteau" Can we use the word "lightning"? The word "lightning" has a specific meaning in English and usually only refers to the big lightning in the sky. Something this small we would perceive as a "flash", which is a better choice, I think.
- Alors soyez gentils ! Note that in both the Woods and Howard translations, they added "If this should happen" which is not in the original. The meaning is: Won't you be so kind as to tell me that he has returned? I don't think "If this should happen, be kind!" makes a lot of sense, then because we don't know whether to be kind to the little prince or to the author. This type of construction is very idiomatic in French. Often, a "point d'exclamation" is used in French where it wouldn't be used in English. Alors, soyez gentils ! is not a demand or an order. So, to make it understandable in English is challenging.

Cher notrepere,

Guy

Bonsoir,

Thanks a lot for all these translations and your comments!
I wondered, please, because I don't understand the meaning about "some"
In the book there is only "a" sheep not "some".
But I read this :
Wordconference.com
some = adj... slang (emphasis: remarkable) familier sacré, super adj
But... If the sheep has eaten the rose... It's not a "great sheep!"...So,why did you translate "some sheep", please ?
Is there another explanation for "some" ?
Merci!

Hello Sanna

Thank you for asking this interesting question. The word 'some', as a determiner, can be used to describe 'a person or thing without knowing or without saying exactly which one' Lien internet

For example:
There must have been some mistake. (Macmillan) We don't know or don't describe the mistake, we only know that one was made
Some fool drove into the back of my car. (Macmillan) We don't know "the fool" who drove into the back of our car, but we insist he is one for doing it
Some lucky person will win more than $1,000,000 in the competition. (Cambridge) Some lucky person, maybe you has won a lot of money
Some idiot's locked the door! (Cambridge) This time, instead of a "fool" we have an "idiot"

It would not be wrong to say "a sheep". I chose "some sheep" because we don't know the sheep and have never met the sheep. It does make the sheep less "personal" and creates a bit more "distance" to use "some". It is your choice. There is no definitive translation.

Bonne fin de journée

Thank you very much for all this work (the one you did and the one you gave us ) And above all, thank you for sharing how it is to be a native English speaker "from inside"
I'm still trying to take in the part about "lightning". Of course, my mistake was I forgot "lightning" is uncountable, and I understand now that it conveys the idea of something big. (By the way, we too have these cakes called éclairs. And it is also unadvisable to count them: more than one is definitely too many! )
My question is: How do you turn "lightning" into a countable noun? A flash of lightning describes the sudden appearance of a bright light for a short time. A lightning bolt is the shock, right?
But what would you call this little drawing (in French "un éclair"):
a lightning-bolt scar ?

-------------------
OK, if you share the eclair, I promise to let go of the depiction of a lightning bolt!

Hello a-e

I'd call that drawing a depiction of a lightning bolt. That's how it is depicted in drawings. I suppose if you were dead set on using the word 'lightning', you might be able to say: There was nothing but a flash of tiny yellow lightning near his ankle. But I think simpler is better. I don't think we can get away from using the word "flash" in other words unless we needed to say that he was "struck by lightning". Then the word lightning would make sense because we'd know the result and not care about the "flash". We couldn't say he was struck by a "flash". We could say he was struck by lightning which caused a great flash.

However, we could also say: There was nothing but a yellow eclair near his ankle. Goodbye Little Prince, Hello little yellow eclair. Mmm, I'm hungry... Thank you Little Prince for leaving behind this little yellow eclair. I don't think your sheep should eat it, it might get sick.

Hello,

That night I didn't see him setting out.He had escaped without making a noise. When I managed to catch up with him, he was striding along.
He simply said to me:
- ah! here you are...
And he took me by the hand. But he worried again:
- You were wrong. You will be upset.I would seem to be dead and it will not be true..
As for me,I stayed quiet.
-You understand. Its too far away.I can't carry this body away. It's too heavy.
As for me,I stayed quiet
-But it would be the same as an old piece of bark.Old pieces of bark are not dull...
He gave up a little bit.But he made un effort anew:
-It will be nice you know.I will also look at the stars .All the stars will be wells with a rusty pulley. All the stars will pour me a drink.
I stayed quiet.
-It will be so funny! you will have five hundred million bells, I will have five hundred million fountains....
And then he stopped talking too because he was weeping...
He hesitated a little while then he stood up and took a step.As for me, I could not move.
There was nothing but a yellow flash of lightning close to his ankle. He stood still just an instant. He didn't shout. He fell lightly as a tree would have fallen. It didn't even make any noise, because of the sand..
Here is a very big mistery. For you who also love the little Prince and for me too, nothing in the universe is alike if
in some place wherever it is, a sheep that we do not know has or has not eaten a rose....
So then,if a child is ever coming to you , if he his laughing,if he has a golden hair,if he doesn't answer when asked to, you will surely guess who he is.So, be nice! Do not leave me that sad: write to me right away that he has come back...
