Hello np. How are you doing ?

Passage rapide ...
Your 'tricky' exercise is just too tempting .

. No rest .
1 ) Pardon me (dear), but I just can't help laughing when you make that funny face ! ( if repeatedly ).
2 ) The intense ( showy) tan of these three people ( skiers) makes their faces look quite alike , since they have got a skin which is browner (rather than darker) than their hair.
3 ) Never could he confess to anyone( would he be capable of confessing )what he was doing then ( was busy at ).
4 ) She has quivered ( being optimistic)and this quivering of hers, her hesitation has brought me a new impulse to live .( if the lady is being questioned at Court > she has shivered , hesitated and this has saved my life ): si le bilan vient d'être fait. Sinon, Le prétérit sera utilisé :she shivered, brought me ...) she quivered / that saved ; j'ai préféré actualiser)
5 ) I wandered for an hour , examining the places ( that)I had almost been at the point of never seeing again. ( I might never have been about to see again )
6 ) That horse does not look in a usual state, does he /she? ( Whom are you riding today ?°)(the horse is not feeling in his/her plate !! = he/she doesn't look off balance ...and keep away )
7 ) The horses were having their shoes fixed outside . (outdoors / were being shod).
8 ) I was not being a nosy man( I did not mean to be intrusive)
9 ) Had they gone deaf, unaware of danger ? ( gone 'out for dinner' )
10 ) Instead of going to bed , I changed my mind and walked down to the seashore again ( beach) ( to lie on the sand and look up at the stars ).

Sorry for this sort of ' draft ..J'y suis allée de mes 'petites' fantaisies . I'll come back. Have a rest and a good day !

Hello dear Notrepere !
What a tricky exercise you gave us ! Nevertheless, I did my best by trying to avoid to translate verbatim. I can't really do better.

1) Pardon me, but you are just so funny when pulling a face like that !
2) With their dark-tanned faces contrasting with their light hair, the three are as alike as three peas in a pod ! ( except that peas are usually green...)
3) Never would he be able to confess what he was doing at that time.
4) A shiver went through her and if I am still alive, it is thanks to it along with some hesitation from her.
5) I roamed the place for one hour, this place I had almost missed seeing could have almost never seen again.*
After thinking over it again and again: "...this place I had been likely never to see again" may be better.
6) The horse appeared not to be didn't appear to be as usual.*
7) The horses were shod outside.
8) I was not putting my nose into your business !
9) Did they turn a deaf ear to the warning, unaware of the danger ?
10) Instead of going to bed, I walked down to the beach again (in order to vanish after performing so badly...sniff!)

Thank you!

* After taking notrepere's remarks into account.

Hello!

No break (for you )!

1. Forgive me, but you really look too funny when you wear that expression.
2. Their three suntanned faces, darker than their hair, wear an air of resemblance.
3. He would never be able to tell anybody what he was doing at this that moment.
4. She shivered; and it is to this very shivering, to this hesitation she had, that I owe my life.
5. I roamed for one hour, having a close look at the place that I had been close to never seeing again.
6. The horse didn't seem to be in his normal state.
7. We were shoeing the horses outside the barn, I reckon.
8. I didn't mean to pry.
9. Were they deaf, unconscious of danger?
10. Instead of going to bed, I walked down to the beach again.

I found it hard not to add a context. I tried to remain as neutral and sober as possible.
I eventually edited my post to indulge in some context-adding to the 7th sentence.

Excuse me, but you look so funny when you pull such a face.
Their three suntanned faces, darker than their hair, look alike each other.
He never could tell anyone what he was doing at that moment this time.
She trembled, and due to that trembling, that hesitation of her part, I'm still alive.
I wandered for one hour, inspecting the place I had been close likely to never see again.
The horse didn't look as usual.
The horses were being shod outside.
I was not doing the being nosy.
Were they deaf, unconscious of danger?
Instead of going to bed, I went back down to the beach.

Thank you for the exercise!

Hello

Most of you have already received personal corrections of your translations, so there isn't a lot to add. Here are a few comments.

I'm sorry, but you look so funny with that expression on your face.

Excusez moi = peut être aussi une expression de politesse (Excuse me, pardon me, etc.)

Other possibilities:
pull a face
make a face

I'm sorry, but you look so funny when you make/pull that face.
là = that

Their three suntanned faces, darker than their hair, are alike.
se ressembler comme trois gouttes d'eau (to be as like as two peas in a pod, or three peas, pourquoi pas, even if they're green ?)

He would never be able to tell anybody what he was doing at that moment.
Never would he be able... autre possibilité
en ce moment = at that moment in reported speech or when talking about the past.
In direct speech when talking about the present: "I will never be able to tell anyone what I am doing at this moment."
But when talking about the past: "I will never be able to tell anyone what I was doing at that moment."

She trembled, and it is to that trembling and hestitation on her part that I owe my life.
devoir la vie = owe one's life
Many of you had other ways of saying the same thing.

I wandered about for an hour, examining the places I had been likely never to see again.

The horse didn't seem to be its usual self.

7. On ferrait les chevaux dehors.
They shod the horses outside.
'on' peut être traduit comme 'we/they/one/etc.' dépendant du contexte ; use the passive voice to avoid having to choose:
The horses were shod (shoed) outside.

8. Je ne faisais pas le curieux.
I wasn't prying.
faire le curieux = to pry/to be nosy/etc

9. Etaient-ils sourds, inconscients du péril?
Were they deaf, unaware of the danger?

Instead of going to bed, I went back down to the beach.
descendre = to go down
redescendre = to go back down/to return to
aller se coucher = to go to bed

Thank you for participating. The next exercise will be a listening exercise...see you soon.

Hello np,

' Shoing horses outside ' sounds a bit odd , just like that . Comme ' laver son linge en famille ' ...
Pourrais-tu , please , éclairer notre soif d'apprendre et savourer l'inspiration de tes choix ?
Ah ! Ton rayon fourni de tests de compréhension orale : chic !
Have a lovely sunny Sunday , all !

Hello Violet

These quotes were taken from 4 or 5 different short stories. I picked these sentences because I thought they were interesting. I'm sure knowing the context might change a few of the sentences, but I think the exercise has served its purpose. At least they shod the horses outside and not in my kitchen! You just never know when a horse needs to relieve itself! I will leave all the rest of it to your imagination. Isn't that best? These sentences can mean anything you wish!

See you for the next exercise. Time to get out your ear sharpener!
