Mots d'excuses/ Thème
Message de violet91 posté le 26-04-2013 à 23:35:30 (S | E | F)
Hello dear all and welcome to new comers who would happily stop here.

See you .

Correction autour du 19 Mai . ...And have real fun !

I love it ! Thank you for this new exercise and good holiday with your kids !

1)Sir,
Would you like to excuse Virgil for his absence, Tuesday. He was kept in the tram which ran out of petrol.

2)Sir,
Martin was late this morning because his dog escaped from his hand. He ran after it during an hour, even as it is for that he was in perspiration. Even so I told him he mustn’t free it.

3)Apologize for Brandon who was late. He told me that he had had the head wind meanwhile walking.
Thank you Madam.

4) Madam,
Mireille was late this morning because she hadn’t finished the cartoon she watched on TV.
but it just lasted for five minutes.
Sorry and have a nice day.

5) Sir,
I summarize when we got up this morning : chocolate bowl spilled, panic, aquarium fallen, goldfish in apnea, screams, barkings, tears, mop and so late.
Sorry with all my apologies.

6) Madam,
Would you like to excuse Téo’s absence last week. But if you knew the prices at the mountain out of holidays and if you could do it you would do it.
I thank you for your leniency.

7) Sir,
My son won’t be present tomorrow. Don’t ask me why. It doesn’t concern you.

8) Sir,
François was absent in school Friday because we had to get over the Loire so we took a long weekend.
Thank you for your hurry.

9) Madam,
Only three weeks of school and already three punishments for my son. Do you intend to keep the same pace all the school year ?
Greetings.

10) These few verses to sweeten
…your anger and your sighs
…Don’t shout, there’s no point.
…My daughter won’t ( w’nt) be there tomorrow

Hi all!

Thanks for this exercise Violet.
And well... mad props to the parents !
These are some cracking good excuses they managed to come up with.
Could be the kids imitating their style and bunking off though ;)

1 ) Sir,
Please excuse Virgil for his absence on Tuesday. He was held back in the tram after it went out of gas.

2 ) Sir,
Martin is late this morning because his dog slipped off his hands. He ran after it for one hour, that’s why he’s all sweaty too. I’d warned him not to unleash it though.

3 ) Sorry ‘bout Brandon being late, he told me he had to walk against the wind.
Thanks Madam.

4 ) Madam,
Mireille was late this morning because she had not finished watching her cartoon. But that was only 5 mins.
Sorry about that and have a good day.

5 ) Sir,
Let me recap our getting up this morning : hot chocolate bowl spilled, panic, aquarium falling, gold fish holding its breath, shouts, barking, tears, mop and hence, lateness.
All apologies.

6 ) Madam,
Please excuse Theo’s absence last week. If you knew the rates in the mountains outside school periods, you’d do it if you could.
Thanks for your indulgence.

7 ) My son won’t be here tomorrow. Don’t ask why, this is none of your business.

8 )François was absent from school on Friday because we had to go across the Loire, bridging the gap between a week-end and a proper holiday.
Thanks for your diligence.

9 ) Only three weeks of classes in and already 3 punishments for my son. Are you going to maintain this rhythm for the whole school year?
Regards

10 ) These few verses to alleviate
.....Your anger and your sorrow
.....Cry not for you can’t beat fate
.....My daughter ain’t gon be here tomorrow

Hello Since some of these are a bit ungrammatical and meant to be funny, I didn't translate them all in a serious manner. No disrespect was intended in the translating of these sentences.

(Some additional explanations for my intentional mistranslations of the text seem in order; I wouldn't want to you learn something incorrect or tell your friend that you couldn't make it on time because you had run out of flatulence. )

1) Dear Sir,
Please pardon Virgil for his abscess on Thursday. He was struck on the trolley because he ran out of flatulence.
(We should pardon Virgil for his absence, but I thought it would be funnier to pardon him for him abscess. Poor Virgil and his abscess which he acquired after being struck for lack of flatulence.  We should say that he was stuck on the trolley when it ran out of petrol, but in the USA, we say 'gas' instead of 'petrol' which is also a slang form for 'flatulence'.  You've got gas?  No dear, I've got flatulence! Now don't you think it is funnier that Virgil was struck for running out of flatulence?  More flatulence, Virgil, I beg you!)
2) Dear Sir,
Martin is late this morning because his dog took off. He ran after it for an hour and that's why he's sweating like a pig. I swear I had warned him, though, not to unleash the dog (nor the pig).(Pigs apparently sweat quite profusely; at least that is what the expression implies.  I've never ever seen a profusely sweating pig, though.)

3) Excuse the late Brandon. He said he had a windy face while walking.
Thank you, (Using the word 'late' in this position means that Brandon is acutally...dead...deceased...a goner. )

4) Dear Madam,
Mireille is late this morning because she hadn't finished watching her favorite cartoons. But it's only five minutes, so get a life.
Sayonara,(Slang expression; it's like 'lighten up')

5) Dear Sir,
Let me summarize this morning's events: an overturned bowl of chocolate milk, a tantrum, the aquarium fell over, a fish gasping for breath, crying, barking, tears, clean up and thus late.
Mea Culpa,

6) Dear Madam,
If you knew how much cheaper it was to go skiing during periods other than school vacation, and if you could do it, you would do it. Thank you for your clemency.

7) Dear Sir,
My son will be absolved tomorrow. Don't ask, 'cos it ain't any of you're** business.
** Intentional grammatical error
8) François was absent-minded from school on Friday because we had to cross the Loire so we took a long weekend.
(I've been absent-minded from school too, many times.  Luckily I didn't need to bring a note from my mother for it.  It just meant that I didn't get very good 'marks' or I should say 'grades')
9) Dear Madam,
Only three weeks of classes and my son already has three detentions. Are you going to continue this trend for the whole school year?

10) (I struggled to make the verses rhyme; thus, some poetic license has been taken)
Some verses to alleviate
Your anger over Watergate
No need to cry 'cause what's the use
Your daughter still looks like a moose
(And the moose were shod outside)

Sorry, I truly apologize.

Good afternoon , dear all,

This is my try :

..... ..... ....

............................ Actual excuse notes from parents ..............
-------------------

-1 ) Sir,
You will excuse Virgil for his absence on Tuesday . He was stuck in the tramway which had run out of petrol.( short of petrol)

- 2 ) Sir,
Martin is late this morning because his dog has slipped off his hands . He has been racing for that silly thing for a full hour , you see : he is dripping with sweat . I did warn him not to unleash him (it), though .
Or simple past and past perfect :
...His dog slipped off his hands . He raced for him ( ran after him) for a full hour which explains he is sweating like a pig * . I had told him not to ...

(* It's actually a reference to pig iron, which is form of iron smelting .)

- 3 ) Scuse me* (my) son Brandon for being late at school . He strained to walk into a headwind. That's what he told me , anyway [niw].All crap (pure truth).Cheers (thanks) ,Ma'am* !

(A shame it is a woman / for a man 'Cheers, mate ! or Cheers, dude !) Me = my and anyway in Cockney.)

- 4 ) Madam,
Mireille arrived late this morning ; she had not quite done with watching her favourite cartoon . It just meant 5 minutes , mind you. Pardon me ( for allowing )and enjoy your day!

- 5 )Sir,
Shall I sum up how we started the day ? A bowl of hot chocolate spilled all over( the table),panic, the fall of the aquarium, goldfish gasping for air , shouts, barks, cries, mopping ( the floor)...and that* makes someone late , doesn't it ?
Sorry and accept my sincere apologies.
( that icky mess )

- 6 ) Will you please excuse Theo for missing school last week ? Honestly, if you knew the prices (rates) in ski(ing) resorts outside the school holidays and if you could do* like us (as we), you would . (no doubt!)
I thank you for your leniency.

( it depends on the meaning / maybe you could afford it and you wouldn't miss this eye-popping opportunity !)

- 7 ) My son ain't going to school tomorrow( or : don't wait for my son tomorrow !). Don't you ask for explanations ! It's none of your business !( = Nunya business ! )

- 8 ) Sir,
François didn't appear at school last Friday , because that bridge over the river Loire is murder and keeps you away for an extended week-end .
Thank you for your diligence *.

( * can be exaggerated with - brisknesss, zeal, solicitude , enthusiasm ).

- 9 ) Madam ,
3 weeks of class, only and three punishments for my son, already ! Are you going to keep this cadence (pressure) throughout the school year ?
I'm off, cheers !( greetings' would be more polite)...and she would like to write 'Have you gone bonkers ?'= crazy), but she can't . The teacher could or would sue her ).

- 10 ) These few lines for soothing
.. .....Your petulance* , your sighing ,
........No fuss, no use making a row*
....... My daughter elsewhere tomorrow.

( * anger, fury)/ all 'that' noise)

Hello dear all ,

See you and have a nice day !

There I am , at last .

Bonsoir dear all ,

- 16 ) Etre retenu, coincé dans un véhicule : to be stuck ( traffic jam , breakdown ...le coup de la panne [ a nervous breakdown : une dépression nerveuse). To be kept implique un gardien ( as a prisoner) / to be held back renvoie plus à l'idée d'être retenu par la force , bridé . Vous pouvez aussi ' hold back' un secret, your tears or your laughter (vous retenir de pleurer, rire...)Virgil pouvait toujours sortir du tram/tramwaay / streetcar...Quelle Odyssée (facile : on est samedi soir!) que d'aller à l'école !

A tram (also known as a tramcar; a streetcar or street car; and a trolley, trolleycar, or trolley car) is a rail vehicle which runs on tracks along public urban streets (called street running), and also sometimes on separate rights of way. Trams powered by electricity, which were the most common type historically, were once called electric street railways. Trams also included horsecar railways which were widely used in urban areas before electrification

- 17 ) To be short of : être à court de : short of money* / short of petrol ( gas in US) # patrol (patrouille).

A tribute to Mandela . Brothers in arms.( 1988) 8 mnLien internet

....Après ces rajouts, je repars là où j'en étais : .........................

- 18 ) The prices, rates , fees, and special offers : de quoi se préoccuper quand on réserve ... Aaaaarrrgh ! What a suspense ! Thrilling .

(the cheek) That was cheeky !
L'éducation arrondit les angles , en général ( sit down, will you ?)
Mind your business ! None of your business : encore plus fort . C'est comme ça ' it is what it is !'

Le pont : the bridge. = ' London bridge is falling down, falling down'' ( et reconstruit aux US , paraît-il)
The first London Bridge was built by the Roman military as part of a road-building .... entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch of McCulloch Oil for US$2,460,000.
#un pont (jour férié accolé au week-end 'normal'= an extended week-end ( a long week-end with one additional day or more ?)

......The most common metric line in English poetry is iambic pentameter ( cinq ). A poem written in pure iambic pentameter (da Dum da Dum da Dum da Dum da Dum) can create a sing songy effect yet a skilled writer can deliver the metric pattern without the poem sounding like a nursery rhyme.

- Your anger = petulance m'a semblé 'chic' et impertinent.
Your sighing ( exaspération) et vos 'your sorrow' : your sorrow était le meilleur ( bien que très profond ce chagrin pour un Proviseur!)
No use +-BV-ing (gérondif ): inutile de , ' ça n'sert à rien' ( it is no use) .
- To make a row : faire du vacarme.

Presque Shakespearian son style : ' Cry not !!

-------- These few verses to alleviate
.....Your anger and your sorrow
.....Cry not for you can’t beat fate (on ne peut pas vaincre le destin)

! Pauvre fille : a moose !

.........For you, np and us all.
