Exercice/ Reformulations
Message de here4u posté le 27-03-2014 à 01:02:48 (S | E | F)
Hello !
The most motivated learners among you have asked me to put exercises on this forum. They're exercises which are not very easy ... and contrary to the tests I make in another part of this site, they require your typing full sentences!

You'll be given 10 sentences and 10 different 'prompts' which must be used. The result shouldn't change the meaning of the sentence:
ex : I've never watched such a good tennis match !
It is .....
It is the best tennis match I have ever watched!
Understood ?

1) Uncle Norman died ten years ago.
Uncle Norman (dead) .........................

2) I would prefer to go to Norway in July than in October !
I'd 'rather .........................

3) You can run as fast as you can, you'll never catch my brother !
No matter ..................................

4) Patrick is not so clever a boy as his cousin.
Patrick isn't such .................................

5) We never talk politics together so as not to quarrel !
We never talk politics together to avoid ..............

6) Judith regretted marrying Peter.
Judith wished ..............................

7) I will take a rest only when I have finished my work !
I won't .........................................

8) Your father was very nice ; He lent us his car !
It was ...........................................

9) As we have less and less money, we have fewer and fewer friends !
The ..................................................

10)Shall I wash the dishes ?
Do you ................................?

Correction on the 6th of April!
Try to enjoy yourselves !

Hello sanna !
Don't be frightened to write what you think (after a little research and thinking of course )! This is not a competition ... and every mistake you make can be useful to you and to everyone ... Don't worry ! I'll guide you through the right sentence ... and so will the other participants ! We're here to learn and not to judge ...and, OF COURSE ... you can have as many attempts as you want !
PS : I'll help you correct a part of your message in mp ...

Hello lakata ...

You're very brave ! So, how do you want me to do ? Shall I give hints ? shall I say nothing and wait for other attempts from other people ? I know senna is working hard on her side ...
Just tell me and I'll do it !
In the meantime ... I must run .... again !

Hello here4u!

So sorry for being mistaken (thanks here4u) by"they're/there're" I had completely forgotten that "they're" could be translated in French by "Ce sont" and not only "Ils/Elles sont"

Hello, all of you !

Well done ! Many good things in these sentences which aren't easy (I started quite gently ... but it's just a beginning ! )... (sbgs => 'they're (= they are) exercises which /that are not very easy ...' just because you have to understand the sentence and find another, better (or more usual)way of saying the same thing !

I could have said that 'they're difficult exercises', but it would have been wrong and it would have discouraged you ... I could have said that 'this type of exercises isn't very easy ...' OK ?
To 'reassure' you, I could tell you that 'Rewriting' is the most dreaded type of exercises for students ! This is true ... but they're wrong and little by little they realize that it becomes quite automatic very quickly ...

As komiks said very nicely, it's a way to improve or 'enrich' your written expression ...

Hello here4u,
thank you for this exercise which raised some doubts in several sentences...
Here's my try :

1) Uncle Norman died ten years ago.
Uncle Norman has been dead for ten years.
(My first thought was "Uncle Norman's dead happened ten years ago", but I guess the solution above is better. I don't know whether the possessive form can be used with the word "dead", but it seems a bit odd).

I'd rather go to Norway in July than in October.

6) Judith regretted marrying Peter.

7) I will take a rest only when I have finished my work !

8) Your father was very nice ; He lent us his car !
It was very nice of your father to lend us his car!

9) As we have less and less money, we have fewer and fewer friends !
The least money we have, the least friends.

10)Shall I wash the dishes ?
Do you want me to wash the dishes ?

I've just read your last message, but I have absolutely no idea how to start the third sentence with however. I'm looking forward to the correction.
I like this kind of exercise very much.
