Exercice 33/La reprise
Message de here4u posté le 05-03-2015 à 23:35:11 (S | E | F)
Hellooo faithful co-workers, newcomers and all others !

Here is number 33! Once again, I want to tell you how delighted and surprised I am, seeing you do my exercises so well, so regularly and asking for more ...
Here's the latest... It's a 'short one' and is quite easy, I think... Let's say
The collective correction will be posted on Sunday, March 15th. Have a good time!

A) Rewrite the sentences using the elements given :
1) - Where's the key to your apartment, please? ( I wonder)
2) - She tiptoed into the room not to wake up the man. (Avoid)
3) - I'll always be glad to help you. (look forward)
4) - I don't want him to go out with you on a regular basis. (I'd rather)
5-6)- Please, don't walk so fast... I can't follow you!
1= ( mind) - 2 = (for fear) 2 different sentences.

B) Translate into English.

C) Translate into French.
"Marriage was in their minds from the beginning. Her widowhood was the major stumbling block. There was no prescribed period of mourning in the Comanche life way, and release could come only from the woman's father. If she had no father, the warrior who was her primary provider would take on the responsibility. He alone would determine when she was no longer a widow. And it might take a long time..."

Thanks for this exercise I hope I understood well for question A 5-6) : You didn't expect 2 sentences with "mind" and 2 other sentences with 'for fear', did you ?

A)
1. I wonder where the key to your apartment is. (Please, can you tell me ?)
2. She tiptoed into the room to avoid waking up the man.
3. I will always look forward to helping you.
4. I'd rather you didn't go out with him on a regular basis.
5. Would you mind walking slower ? I can't follow you !
6. She asked him not to walk so fast for fear she might lag behind.

B)
a) He hardly ever changes clothes, let's say once every four or five days. I've asked him to change at least every other day.
b) Last month, he had been sick for ten days. He's only been recovering since last week and will only be driving his car again in a few weeks.
c) He was given a fine for speeding violation, but he protested and (now) says he'll never pay for it. (... et dit qu'il ne la paierait jamais : ... and said he'd never pay for it)
d) I don't like his hair length. He should really have it cut.
e) There's no need to cry, I won't get coaxed into giving you this permission... As my grandmother used to say, these are crocodile tears...

C)

1.Please, I wonder where the key to your apartment could be.
2.She tiptoed into the room to avoid waking up the man.
3.I will always looking forward to helping you.
4 I would rather you didn’t go out with him on a regular basis.
5 Please, would you mind walking slower, I can’t follow you!
She said to him: don’t walk so fast for fear that I should not follow you.

Voici la fin. Ce n'est pas une correction
a). He hardly ever changes clothes, let’s say every four or five days, I asked to do it at least once every two days.
b). Last month he was sick for ten days .He has just started recovering since last week and he will be able to drive his car in a few weeks.
c). He was demanding a fine for speeding, however he protested and says: He would never pay for it.
d). I don’t like his hair length .He should have it cut.
e). It is no use crying, you won’t coax me into giving you this permission; as my grandmother used to say, these are crocodile’s tears.

Last month he was sick for 10 days. Starting from the last week he becomes to recover and he will drive his car again in the next weeks.

Hello Here4u, here is my work

I wonder where the key of your apartment is ..
She tiptoed into the room to avoid waking up the man
I will always be looking forward to helping you
I'd rather you didn't go out with him on a regular basis
Would you mind not walking so fast ?. I can't follow you
Please , don't walk so fast for fear I may not follow you and then I will be getting out of breath, and besides I may risk an heart attack

B) Translate into English.
He hardly ever changes clothes , let's say every 4 or 5 days .. I have asked him to do it at least once every other days .
Last month he had been being ill for ten days . He has just begun to recover from his illness since last week and will only drive again his car within a few weeks
He was given a fine for overspeeding . However he protested and said he would never pay it
I don't like the length of his hair ... He should really made his hair cut
It's no use crying . I will not let me coaxed for giving you that permission . As my grandmother would say it : these are 'crocodiles tears '

Thank you very much for this new exercise

Hello Here4u, thanks for this exercice, I am not very clear on A/5-6
A)
1) I wonder where the key to your apartment is ?
2) She tiptoed into the room to avoid waking up the man.
3) I am looking forward to help you.
4) I'd rather him not to go out with you on a regular basis.
5-6) 1- Please, mind you don't walk so fast that I couldn't follow you !
2- Please, don't walk so fast for fear I can't follow you ! for fear of not being able to follow you !

B)
a) He almost never changes his clothes, say every 4 or 5 days... I asked him to do so at least every other day.
b)Last month he was sick for 10 days. He has just started to recover since last week and is going to drive his car again in a few weeks.
c) He got a speeding ticket, but he protested and said he isn't going ever to pay.
d) I don't like his hair length... He'd better have it cut.
e) It's useless to cry, I won't be coaxed into giving you this permission...As my grand mother would say, these are crocodile tears.

C)

Got it ?
Bonne soirée !

Hello everyone! Thanks for this new exercise, and here is my try!

A. Rewriting the sentences.
1. I wonder where the key to your apartment is. Could you tell me, please ?
2. She tiptoed into the room to avoid waking up the man.
3. I'm looking forward to the next time I can help you.
4. I'd rather not see him going out with you on such a regular basis.
5. Would you mind stop walking so fast ? I can't follow you !
6. She asked him to stop walking so fast, for fear she couldn't follow him.

B. Translating into English.
1. He almost never changes clothes, maybe every four or five days... I asked him to do so at least once every two days.
2. Last month, he was sick for ten days. He's only starting to recover since last week and he will be able to drive his car in a few weeks only.
3. He was given a fine for exceeding the speed limit, but he protested and says he is never going to pay for it.
4. I don't like the length of his hair... He really should have them cut off.
5. It's useless to cry, I'm not going to soften myself to give you that permission. As my grandmother used to say, those are crocodile tears...

C. Translating into French.

Hello dear Here4u!

A) Rewrite the sentences using the elements given:
1) Where's the key to your apartment, please?
I wonder where the key to your apartment is...

2) She tiptoed into the room not to wake up the man.
She tiptoed into the room to avoid waking up the...cat (my cat again, still asleep).

3) I'll always be glad to help you.
I'll always be looking forward to helping you.

4) I don't want him to go out with you on a regular basis.
I'd rather you didn't go out with him on a regular basis.

5) Please, don't walk so fast...I can't follow you!
Would you mind walking not so fast? I can't follow you!

6) Please, don't walk so fast...I can't follow you!
Please, don't walk so fast, for fear I might lose your track!/ for fear of shaking me off!

B) Translate into English:
He hardly ever changes clothes, let's say, every four or five days...I've asked him to do it at least once every other day.

Last month, he was ill for ten days. It's just one week since he's begun to feel better and he only will be able to drive in a few weeks.

He got a fine for speeding, but he protested and said he wouldn't pay it.

I find his hair too long. He really should to (et c'était même pas pour voir si tu suivais ! L'horreur absolue !) have it cut.

There's no point in crying. I won't let myself be coaxed/cajoled into giving you this permission. As my grand-mother said, these are only crocodile tears.

Not that easy, this exercise, particularly the theme...That's why I'm all the more grateful!

- She tiptoed into the room for fear of waking up the man.
3-I am looking forward to helping you in the future
4-I'd rather he didn't go out with you on a regular basis.
5-I'd prefer you to walk more slowly as I can't keep up with you.
- Do you mind walking more slowly as I can't follow you.

B) Translate into English.

He hardly have ever changed his clothes, maybe every 4 or 5 days... I asked him to do it at least once every 2 days.
He was ill for ten days last month. Since last week he has begun to feel better but he'll only be able to drive his car again in some weeks.
He was fined for driving too fast, but he appealed and he says he's not ever going to pay.
I don't like his hair lenght. He really should have it cut.
Crying won't help. I'm not going to be softened into giving such permission. As my grandmother used to say : these are just crocodile tears...

C) Translate into French.
Michael Blake, Dances With Wolves. (1988)

hello Here4U,
sorry for giving you my try, late,

1. I wonder if you have the slightest idea of where is the key of your apartment ?
2. She tiptoed into the room to avoid waking up the man sleeping.
3. I am looking forward to helping you again, if you need, don't hesitate.
4. I'd rather not he goes out regularly with you, it's not a man for you !!!
5. would you mind not walking so fast, I can't follow you !
5. I am sorry, but for fear not to be able to follow you, Can you walk more slowly !

a. He rarely changes his clothes, I would say, every 4 or 5 days.... I have asked him to change at least once every two days (or every other day).
b. Last month, he has been sick for 10 days, he only begins to recover health since the last week, and will be able to drive his car only in some weeks.
c. he was fined for exceeding the speed limit, but he has contested and said that he will never pay it.
d. I don't like his hair's length, he should really have it cut.
e. It's useless to cry, you're not going to wheedle me for having this permission .... as my grand-mother usually said : These are crocodile tears...

thank you.

Hello

C) Translate into French.
"Marriage was in their minds from the beginning. Her widowhood was the major stumbling block. There was no prescribed period of mourning in the Comanche life way, and release could come only from the woman's father. If she had no father, the warrior who was her primary provider would take on the responsibility. He alone would determine when she was no longer a widow. And it might take a long time..."
Dances With Wolves. (1988)

Marvellous!

Hello!
I know you're expecting it... Here's the collective 'correction'... Several among you have already posted N°34... Your enthusiasm is a wonder to me! Thank you for your very good work...
Please, be indulgent if I happen to have let typos slip through my many proofreadings ...

A) Rewrite the sentences using the elements given :
1) - Where's the key to your apartment, please? ( I wonder)
I wonder where the key to your apartment is!

- Nous avons ici une interrogative indirecte (introduite par I wonder = je me demande – qui peut être suivi de 'what, where, when, who, whose, why, how (many- much – often-), if' …- ).

2) - She tiptoed into the room not to wake up the man. (Avoid)
She tiptoed into the room to avoid waking up the man…

- to avoid + V + ing;
- not to wake up= in order not to wake up= so as not to…

3) - I'll always be glad to help you. (look forward)
I’ll always look forward to helping you.

- to look forward to + V + ing = attendre avec impatience.

4) - I don't want him to go out with you on a regular basis. (I'd rather)
I’d rather he didn’t go out with you on a regular basis…

5-6)- Please, don't walk so fast... I can't follow you!
1= ( mind) - 2 = (for fear) 2 different sentences.
Do you mind not walking so fast, please ? I can’t follow you.
Please, don’t walk so fast for fear I might not be able to follow you.

-‘Do you mind + V + ing’
- for fear + might => for fear I might fall down/ for fear I might not keep up …

B) Translate into English.
He hardly ever changes clothes, let's say every 4 or 5 days...I’ve asked him to do so every other day, at least.

- Tous les 2 jours = ‘every other day’ ou ‘every 2 days’.

Last month, he was ill for 10 days. He has just started recovering/feeling better since last week and will only start driving his car again in a few weeks.

- to start + V + ing => he has just started feeling better = commencer à.

He was fined/ given a ticket for speeding, but he has protested and now says he'll never pay it.

-‘on’=> ayez le réflexe ‘passif’ => ‘he was fined’ ‘he was given a fine/ a ticket’.

I don't like the length of his hair. He should really have it cut.

- sa longueur de cheveux = the length of his hair.
- se faire couper les cheveux = to have one’s hair cut. Attention ! HAIR= indénombrable singulier => ‘it’s too long’.

It’s no use crying ! I won’t let myself be coaxed into giving you this permission… As my grandmother used to say, these are crocodile tears!

- ‘it’s no use + V + ing’ était parfait. it’s ‘useless to cry’ aussi. To be worth = valoir la peine de, ou valoir de l’argent convenait moins bien ici ...
- 'used to say' indique une action qui existait autrefois, mais plus maintenant.

Michael Blake, Dances With Wolves. (1988)

(2) To stumble = trébucher ; littéralement = pierre d’achoppement = obstacle = entrave
(3) ‘viduité’ ! WOW ! Ariane …

(3 typos retrouvés à my latest reading ...) Thanks again for working so much !
