Exercice 45/Toujours affamés
Message de here4u posté le 16-06-2015 à 22:00:44 (S | E | F)
Hello, dear friends... hardworkers...
Here is N° 45!

I) Translate into English :

(Allez … on cherche !

- 56 309 016 habitants :
- 4 444 pages :

9) idem : Dates :
1066 =
2015 =
1605 =
1700 =

II) Translate into French :
« Don’t honey me, » she said. « This is hard, brother. This life is not easy, any way you cut it. »
She seemed to think things over for a bit. She shook her head. Then she finished her drink. She said, “I even dream of vitamins when I’m asleep. I don’t have any relief! There’s no relief! At least you can walk away from your job and leave it behind… After you’ve left the goddamn place, you don’t come home and dream about it, do you?” she screamed.

Hello here4u
I have to leave tomorrow, for a week, so I give you my try today, and you could correct when you want.

I) Translate into English :
1. Many people phone her, but she only has very few real friends and she feels lonely.
2. He was so drunk when coming, that he fell asleep in a heap ! I had to shake him for awaking and persuade him not to return home with his car.
3. The show has been canceled because too few people has booked, and asking a full troupe to come, plus the scenery would not be productive.
4. As there's less traffic at the countryside than in the city, the car insurance is cheaper.
5. I went to Oslo last year, and I stayed there 15 days. A lot of opportunity to eat sandwiches of salmon !
6. He's helped us, as if to say " I couldn't care less".
7. It is not because you're threatening me, that you will prevent I say what I think !

8 ) Mettre en toutes lettres !
- 56 309 016 habitants : Fifty-six million three hundred and nine thousand, and sixteen inhabitants.
- 4 444 pages : Four thousand, four hundred and forty-four pages.

9) idem : Dates :
1066 = Ten sixty-six
2015 = Twenty fifteen
1605 = Sixteen o five
1700 = Seventeen hundred

Thanks a lot for this new interesting exercise.

Hello Here4u !!!!
I take the dive and I try to do the whole exercise. This is the result of my work and at the moment, I can't do better. I am sure that there are a lot of errors but, as I say to my little pupils at school, "making errors help you to learn".( I wanted to say "on apprend de ses erreurs" but I don't have found anywhere I didn't find that expression anywhere. this expression in English).

9) idem : Dates :
1066 = ten, sixty-six
2015 = two thousand and fifteen
1605 = sixteen, O, five

II) Translate into French :
« Don’t honey me, » she said. « This is hard, brother. This life is not easy, any way you cut it. »

I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT ... May the Force help you ...

Hello here4u.
You can correct my try. I won't change anything

Have a good Monday

I) Translate into English :
Many people call her, but she has very few true friends and feels lonely.
He was so much drunk as stepping in, that he fell asleep heavily! I needed to shake him awake and talk him out of driving back home.
The show has been canceled on account of too few bookings and moving a whole troupe and sets wouldn't be cost-effective.
As traffic is less important in country than in town, the car insurance is cheaper.
Last year, I'd gone to Oslo and stayed for 15 days. Lots of opportunities to eat salmon sandwiches ...
7) Il nous a aidés, avec l’air de dire ‘je m’en moque pas mal…’ (Allez … on cherche ! Pas facile...H4U)
He gave us a hand, pretending to say: 'it's a matter of complete indifference to me...'
You won't prevent me from saying what I think by using treats!

9 ) Mettre en toutes lettres !

- 4 444 pages : Four thousand, four hundred, and forty-four pages.

9) idem : Dates :
1066 = Ten sixty-six
2015 = Two thousand fifteen
1605 = Sixteen five
1700 = Seventeen hundred

Exercice45. Correction!
Hello dear friends and co-workers...
ça me touche beaucoup !

I) Translate into English :
Many people call her, but she has very few /real/true friends and is feeling lonely.
(Emploi de many/much, few/a few/little/a little.

He was so drunk when he came back that he was out like a light. I had to shake him awake and talk him out of driving back home.
- être ivre = to be drunk => to be so drunk that …
- en entrant = when he was back/came back
- Si vous mettez : ’sleep like a log’/ ‘in a heap’. = He dropped off, qui est familier.
Le secouer = la méthode. Pour le réveiller = le résultat à obtenir => to shake somebody awake ; to sing a baby asleep ; ‘asleep’, ‘awake’ sont des adjectifs. On pourrait aussi mettre un verbe comme résultat : 'to sing the baby to sleep', mais ici, l’action ne serait pas encore accomplie, ce ne serait pas ‘le résultat acquis’, mais celui à atteindre …
- le persuader de faire (en discutant) = to talk someone into doing something => dissuader = out of doing something (leçon N° 105346)

The show was cancelled as there were too few bookings and that moving a whole company of actors and pieces of sets wasn’t profitable .

- for lack of bookings .

As there’s less traffic in the country than in cities, car insurances are much less expensive there.
- ici, l’article défini est indispensable. ‘I live in the country’ et ‘I’m living in the countryside’ ou le contraire !)
- l’assurance des voitures = affirmation générale. => soit ‘car-insurance is ... ‘ soit ‘car-insurances are’.

I went to Oslo last year, and did a fifteen-day-(long) stay : many opportunities to eat salmon sandwiches.
- ‘l’an dernier’ = moment du passé révolu => prétérit.
-un séjour de 15 jours /a 15 day-trip ; a fifteen-days’ trip/ a 15-day stay/ I stayed for 15 days/ a fortnight =
- many + dénombrable pluriel.
- salmon sandwiches ; encore une fois, le premier nom d’un nom composé reste invariable;

He helped us as though he thought 'I couldn't care less'.
- with a look meaning ‘I couldn’t care less’, on his face m’aurait satisfaite.
- a ‘don’t-care-a-fig-‘/ ‘don’t-give-a-fig’ look/ a ‘really-don’t-care’ look/

Threatening me won’t prevent/keep me from saying what I think /’m thinking about it.
- Le fait de me menacer = Threatening => gérondif ; le fait que tu me menaces = Your/you threatening me ; by threatening me (boff!)

NP, you'd better work on this one!
- 56 309 016 habitants :fifty-six million, three hundred and nine thousand, and sixteen inhabitants.
- 4 444 pages : four thousand, four hundred and forty-four pages.= idem

9) idem : Dates : attention !
1066 = ten sixty-six
2015 = twenty fifteen or, two thousand and/O fifteen. Puis, two thousand and one … et peu à peu, le cas général : 'twenty fifteen'
1700 = seventeen hundred.
- Une centaine entière = seventeen hundred.

Raymond Carver – Vitamins – 1993

(1) to honey n’existe pas.
(3) This comes from the expression, "Cut the cake any way you like", which means "No matter what you do…", or "No matter how you look at it…"(Wordreference.com)

Stay Foolish!' is taken from an inspirational speech delivered by Steve Jobs at Stanford University. A few years ago, I studied it with my students who loved it... (and so did I!)
Please, please... 'Stay Hungry!'(like my 'kids') so that I can 'Stay Foolish!'
PS: please forgive any remaining mistake or typo...

I had to shake him AWAKE".
Wishing you a good but not too hot week!

Hello
I don't know if the correction is already available; I didn't want to read the thread so that not to see so that I didn't read the answers because I didn't want to be influenced by your suggestions..
So, here is my share :

Translation into English :
1) Many people call her, but she has very few real friends and feels lonely...
2) He was so drunken when came in that he fell asleep right away ! I had to shake him awaken and talk him out of driving back home...
3) The show was cancelled because there weren't many reservations and making a whole troop come and the scenery was not profitable...
4) As there is fewer trafic in the country than in town, car insurance is less expensive there.
5) I went to Oslo last year, and I stayed 15 days. Many oppourtunities to eat slamon sandwiches...
6) He helped us, seemingly thinking ' I don't care a dime...'
7) It's not by threatening me that you will prevent me from saying what I think !

56 309 016 habitants : fifty-six million three hundred and sixteen inhabitants

Dates :
1066 = ten sixty-six
2015 = two thousand and fiteen
1605 = sixteen o five
1700 = seventeen hundred

Now, I'm running to see if there is a correction....
