Ex 106/ well done! Let's go on
Message de here4u posté le 14-04-2017 à 22:58:35 (S | E | F)
Hello, Dear hard workers and Friends!

Here is exercise 106 where I ask you to be as disciplined as you were in 105... and for your effort.
This new exercise is a real (especially for the translation into French which isn't easy at all. Take care and think a lot... )
This time, Maxwell is the beginner of "Our Story"(Follow the rules and everything will be OK.) Maxwell!
Number 4 is particularly difficult. Try to make a real meaningful sentence even if you decide to give it originality and fancy...
This exercise will be corrected online on Saturday, April 29th. late
Please, follow the rules and wordings given at the beginning of each exercise. (This is quite IMPORTANT!)In exchange, as ever, I give you THE FORCE.

I)Translate into English:
Maxwell.

II) Translate into French:
« Why not just leave, tomorrow morning, early ? I see myself creeping out of the house before it’s light, like a thief, loading my things into the car, shutting the boot lid softly, softly, so as not to alert anybody, leaving a note in the living-room with the house keys, «Sorry it was a terrible mistake, all my fault, I should never have applied for the post, please forgive me.» And then pulling the door shut on this Scandinavian rabbit hutch and driving away along the empty service road, scarves of mist round the throats of the streetlamps, slowing down at the exit barrier to give a wave to the security man yawning in his brightly-lit glazed sentry box. He nods back, suspects nothing, raises the barrier to let me out, and I am free!»

David LODGE, Thinks.

(You have to follow the given topic, but may, at any time, cleverly change it through your interventions and their translations into French. (You’re limited to 20 words, at most AND cannot post twice on end). You have then as many chances to participate as you fancy, BUT in order to post the first one, you have to have worked on the rest of the exercises (however little you have done…) and qualify your work: “In progress”. You’re not allowed to post beyond the third intervention before your exercise is “Ready for correction”.)

Now, Maxwell’s writing:
- "Listen girls! You won't believe the zaniest story Rose has ever told me! " "Go ahead! We're all ears!"(= 20 words)
"Vas-y ! On est tout ouïe !"

IV) Playing with words…
Using the two verbs in whatever tenses you fancy, ALL THE WORDS given below, and the suitable punctuation: scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE. (
The number of words is free, so is the theme of your sentence. The aim of the game is to write as few words as possible (don’t forget to specify the number!), making sense, of course, and using the 8 words, written in capitals in your sentence BUT not two (or more) of the given words are allowed to follow one another. (Deadline on April the 27th.)

TO SHARE . TO DECEIVE . POVERTY . MUSIC . SHINY . STUBBORN . UNLESS . PROVIDED .

May inspiration, imagination, and diversity be with you with the help of THE FORCE.

Hello Here4U and Lucile83
Isn't there a typo in David Lodge's excerpt ? Shouldn't it be written "empty service road" instead of "empty service room" ? That would make more sense
Thanks a lot !

Yes it is 'service road' instead of 'service room'. I have corrected.
Thank you for noticing

Hello Lucile, Maxwell and legrandmalin !
Thanks to the three of you for correcting, being careful and rushing on the new work while I was trudging through the details of the explanations of tonight's correction . Let's hope I won't have left too many typos there either...

READY TO BE CORRECTED
Hello Here4U
Thanks a lot for this wonderful exercise which gave me the time of my life I can't wait to carry on with our story !

I)
1. He knows that someone gave him a second chance. He won't waste it and will do his best to manage all right...

2. « Que se passe-t-il dans ton esprit ? Comment fais-tu cela ?
2. "What's on your mind ? How do you do that ? How can you keep going ahead ?" "Well, when someone must fight, I do it ! When it's time to cry, I do it... and finally, there's a time to live".

3. J'ai besoin que vous soyez concentrés ... Mais n'en faites pas trop ... Je vais essayer d'arranger les choses.
3. I need that you should be concentrated... But don't make too much... I'm going to try to arrange things.

4. When I was a little baby, someone had sung to make me sleep, then someone told me stories and fairy tales. Now, it's different ! They lie to me and they neglect me... and I say to myself : "What a wonderful life!"

5. Noone spared me anything in this affair and I hate the media that aimed at me, by dragging me on the mud, whereas I'm white as snow...

6. -We've got to follow you ! You change from cock to ass... - And you, you change your mind like you change your shirt! No later than yesterday, you were OK to go, and now, you try to discourage me.

III« Our Story »
- "Listen girls! You won't believe the zaniest story Rose has ever told me! " "Go ahead! We're all ears!"(20)

(20) Maxwell 2

IV
Here's a pretty dark sentence for IV -that doesn't sound like me at all-
Don't be STUBBORN and SHARE that secret, and I promise you will be PROVIDED with a SHINY new MUSIC publicity agency UNLESS I discover you have DECEIVED me, and you'll know what POVERTY means. (36)
If you don't like it, here's another one :
UNLESS he's STUBBORN, I'll make him join the MUSIC-against-POVERTY contest in order for us to buy a SHINY new car, PROVIDED that he SHARES the prize with me and doesn't DECEIVE me. (37)

Hello Here4u

Thank you for this exercise it's a long time since I took part in it.

READY TO BE CORRECTED

I)Translate into English:
He knows he was given a second chance. He won't waste it and will do his best to get by.

2. « Que se passe-t-il dans ton esprit ? Comment fais-tu cela ?
"What is happening in your mind ? How do you do that? How can you continue to go ahead?"
"Well, when I have to fight, I fight. When it is time to cry, I do it....and finally there is a time to live?"

3. J'ai besoin que vous soyez concentrés ... Mais n'en faites pas trop ... Je vais essayer d'arranger les choses.
I need you to be focused, but don't do too much....I am going to try to make things right.

When I was a baby, they sang to make me sleep, next I was told stories and tales. Since then it is different! I was lied and I was stood up and I say to myself "what a wonderful life!"

Nothing will have been spared to me in this case / story, I am angry with the media that decided to target me, dragging my name through the mud when I am pure as the driven snow.

Maxwell.
It's necessary to follow you! You jump from one subject to another one.....- And you, you are as changeable as the weather! Only yesterday, you agreed to go there and now you are trying to dissuade me.

David LODGE, Thinks

Thank you for coming to the festival in favour of associations struggling against POVERTY, and for playing the guitar however PROVIDED you play Celtic MUSIC that the audience will SHARE with emotion, UNLESS like your STUBBORN friend, driving a SHINY car, you DECEIVE me, giving up everything

"What's going on in your mind ? How can you do this ? How can you keep moving ?" "Well, when I have to fight for something, I do it ! When time to cry comes, I cry... and finally, there's a time to live.

3. J'ai besoin que vous soyez concentrés ... Mais n'en faites pas trop ... Je vais essayer d'arranger les choses.
I need you to be focused... But don't overdo it... I'll try and sort things out.

But my favorite is this one :

PROVIDED people stop being STUBBORN and start SHARING more, we will celebrate with MUSIC this SHINY day when POVERTY is eradicated, UNLESS we are DECEIVED by illusions. (27)

Hello janerese!

Welcome in this group...
The "problem" is that you shouldn't have used "Advanced Layout" (la mise en forme avancée). Don't worry too much... We have our magician: dear Lucile and her magic wand... and hands! She colours, reduces or magnifies!

Edit: 20/04= Lucile. ! Merci

Re, re, re : VOTEZ, s'il vous plaît.

" What's going on in your mind ? How can you do this ? How can you keep on going forward ?"___"Well now! when it's
necessary to fight, I'll fight! When it's time for crying, I do cry...and then finally, there is a time to live."

I need you to be focused.... But do not overdo it...I will try and manage to work things out.
When a baby, I used to be sung into falling asleep, later, I was told stories and tales . Ever since, it was not
the same thing ! I was lied to and got stood up...and now I am telling to me:"what a wonderfull life It had been!".

Nothing will have been spared to me in this case and I'm angry at the medias for their targetting me, dragging me
through the mud even though I am as pure as the driven snow.
Maxwell.
You're hard to follow ! You're jumping from one subject to another..___And you, It seems like you're cutting in and out! As recently as yesterday you wanted to go and now you are talking me out of it.

Hello!

There was (and still is) a typo in the posts I couldn't correct... bloodcurling instead of bloodcurdling. Thank you very much Alpiem for telling us. (and don't forget that everyone MUST correct the mistakes or typos they notice...)
I think it a beautiful typo, a cute one, though regrettable... and it reminds me of a confusion I saw quite often in my students' papers: "there was a weeping willow sitting on a bench!"(instead of widow, of course!)

(can you please correct in your posts and not copy again...)

Hello,
I'm supposed to be studying for my project , yet here I am playing games.....what a hassle.
Anyway , can I still play with the words? if so :

I)Translate into English:
---> He know that he was given a second chance , he won't waste it and he will do his best to get by.

2. « Que se passe-t-il dans ton esprit ? Comment fais-tu cela ?
---> « What's happening in your mind ? How do you do it? How can keep going?»
«Oh well , when it's time to fight I fight,when it's time to cry , I do....and then there is a time to live.»

3. J'ai besoin que vous soyez concentrés ... Mais n'en faites pas trop ... Je vais essayer d'arranger les choses.
---> I need to keep focus..but don't overdo it....I'm going to try to make things right.

---> When I was a baby , people sang to make me sleep , then I was told stories and fairy tales. From then on it was different ! I was dumped and lied to....and I tell myself : "What a wonderful life!" (This is not autobiography.....just some grammar !)

---> Nothing would have been spared to me in this case and I resent the media who took me as a target by dragging me through the mud despite me being as pure as the driven snow.

---> You need to be followed! You keep jumping from one topic to another...-And you , you constantly change your opinion !Just yesterday you agreed to go, and now you try to talk me out of it.

IV)Playing with words…
People who boasts to SHARE are STUBBORN enough TO DECEIVE themselves, and PROVIDED they are helping in reducing POVERTY, their morals may change from iffy to SHINY , UNLESS of course they love pop MUSIC.(35 words)

It's me again , Dino !
Here's the hot potato ...

III) Our Story
-'Listen girls! You won't believe the zaniest story Rose has ever told me! ' 'Go ahead! We're all ears!'
'Vas-y ! On est tout ouïe !'
- It all happened on a Saturday night at about 09:00 p.m. Rose was watching a horror film with her family,
- when suddenly the storm hit her, plunging the house into darkness. Her ten-year-old twins went 'boo!' like ghosts...
- A cold breeze went through the room with a threatening blood-curdling hiss; the twins rushed for candles and matches,
- but Jamie stumbled on the coffee table and Steve slipped on the banana skin he had left on the floor...
- The deep and strong laugh of a large husky voice was heard and going crescendo.
- It was hair-raising... Where did it come from? Was someone making fun of us, sending messages from the hereafter?
- True, Aunty Susy didn't hold us dear to her heart but I cannot imagine she would frighten us just for fun ?
- Then a very loud knock at the door made them scream with fear. "Come open the door! It's me!"
- The twins hid under the table while Rose was approaching the door, fearful, with a knife in her hand.
- "Who are you?" said Rose. "Dorothy, your neighbour!". " Gee, what a relief!" But when Rose opened the door,
"Qui êtes-vous ?" dit Rose. "Dorothée, votre voisine". " Eh bien, quel soulagement ! " Mais quand Rose ouvrit la porte
- she saw a horrible witch, dressed in black, teeth dripping with blood: "My broom has broken! Can you help, please?"
"Ahhhhhhh!" Rose screamed. "Don't be afraid, I'm a good witch. I used to be the Dorothy you knew "...
" Ahhhhhh!" cria Rose.
- "No! You aren't good! You're a brown-eyed bloodthirsty vampire: Dorothy's are blue. Call 911 kids! Quick!"
"Pas vrai! Vous n'êtes pas gentille! Vampire assoiffée de sang aux yeux foncés ! Ceux de Dorothée sont bleus ... Appelez la police, les enfants ! Vite !"
- To prove her wrong, the good witch turned her house into the magnificent castle Rose had always dreamt of."
-"We're no rookies", Steve said "or that gullible! Look at her hand, Mom! She's hiding a gigantic knife!
-"If you're a good witch, how do you explain your bloody teeth ? And this knife ? And your eyes?"
-"I'm a vampire , I like blood , big deal ! The knife is for self-defence and my eyes are cursed, what is YOUR problem?
