Ex 111/not easier than expected
Message de here4u posté le 28-06-2017 à 19:29:42 (S | E | F)
Hello !
Et pour relever mes défis, THE FORCE IS WITH YOU.

I) Translate into English:
...... Maxwell !

II) Translate into French:
«Fiction is on the third floor,» she said? « And biography is on the second. I recognized her; she read Georgette Heyer and biographies of royalty and returned books so saturated with cigarette smoke I imagined she exhaled over each page on purpose.
At the end of the visit, the tall boy came up to talk.
«I want a book», he said, «about being a magician.»
«What sort of magician?» «Like Merlin?»
«No,» he said. He put his hands on the circulation desk. His fingernails were cleaner than an ordinary eleven-year-old’s; his mother was then still alive. «Just tricks,» he said. I want to make things look like they disappear. I looked at the card catalog under magic, but I didn’t find anything.»
«Try conjuring,» I told him. We found only one book.
Elizabeth MacCracken, The Giant’s House, 1996.

III) Playing and working with words:
Using THE 8 WORDS given below ( - the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses (or forms) you fancy-, 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words; you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.

(You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!)
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :

(to)HAND – (to) WARN – PROPER – TRUE – CIRCUMSTANCES – ADVICE – ACTUALLY – LEAST + progression parallèle.

IV) SOS, student in need… « Holiday… » Time to help my poor students again : please…will you?
Your mission, and I know you love it..., will be to CORRECT AS MANY MISTAKES AS YOU CAN. (PLEASE, WRITE THE CORRECTED WORDS or sentences IN CAPITALS; (add punctuation if necessary) )

Afterwards of weeks-hot waves there is the relief at least the temperature have droped of ten degrees on a day. Nigel had been dreaming for freshness of a poll, but was worried concerning his suit. It was longer, much longer and he feared the clark couldn’t leave him inside –the rules are againts it- He dislike to break the rules and will fell quite akward when he ented in water. When he will be into, he would comfortable and could swum and swum… He will feels freedom.

No it's not desperate, is it? Just help him out, please. and once again, THE FORCE IS WITH YOU!

hello, here4u, proud to be the first one for n°111. READY

I) Translate into English:
Though he feels joyful when it comes to the other's difficulties and that he could even kick somebody when he's down,
he doesn't cheer at his silly assumption he is putting forward, yet.

You are no longer as young as you were and you should take it easy for you look very exhausted. Don't wait till the
inevitable comes and do take care of you.

You can't blame this man for that disaster and you and you alone will be held accountable for all that. Moreover, most
of the leads that you have reported have proven dead end.

4 Maxwell.
With reference to the last month version, only the last two figures have changed and honestly , it's the line thickness. I was expecting a greater variation.

5 Maxwell. ...... Maxwell !
We are locked in by that snow. However relaxed my husband may be playing it around, I't won't change anything, He's fooling nobody.
. Even playing "don't ask, don't tell" won't soothe my nerves!

Short of PROPER evidence, we are WARNING you that you will have to take ADVICE from a lawyer who could ACTUALLY tell you what
CIRCUMSTANCES are TRUE so that you might be the least and least bothered as you can provide the more and more pieces of evidence as possible: as soon as you have got them, please do HAND over the file to us .( whouaou!!)

After weeks of heat-waves, there is at last a relief as the temperatures have dropped ten degrees down in one day.Nigel has been dreaming for the freshness of a pool but he is worrying about his bath-suit. It is too long, much too long and he fears the clerk

Ex 111/not easier than expected

Hello Here4U.
Thank you for this new exercise.
Here is what I tried to do. READY TO BE CORRECTED

I) Translate into English:
Even though he likes enjoy when others are facing problems and could even kick a man who is down, don’t applaud again to the foolish hypothesize that he is putting forward.

You are no longer young and should slow down as it looks like you are at the end of the roll. Don’t wait for the inevitable and take care of you.

You can’t blame this man for this disaster, and you are solely responsible for all what happened.
Futhermore, much of the tracks you pointed out appeared to be deadlocked.

Compared with the last month version, the two last figures have been modified only with the line thickness. I was waiting for a greatest change.

We are being held inside because of the snow ! Despite my husband seems to be relaxed, there is no difference, he is not fooling anybody. Even if we play to the game “neither yes nor no” this will not calm my nerves.

voici mon essai. READY TO BE CORRECTED.

Although he seems feeling joy at the problems people meet, and (he) could even hit a man fallen on the ground (ashore), don't applaud too fast the insane hypothesis he is making.

You are no longer so young today, you should go on gently because you seem to be strung out. Don't wait for the bound to happen and take care (of you).

You can't say this man is responsible for this catastrophe, and you alone, would have to be accountable for your actions. In fact, a lot of the tracks you've pointed out have turned out to be dead ends.

4 Maxwell.
Compared to the version of last month, only the two last figures have changed, and frankly, it's tiny. I was waiting for a bigger différence.

- Juste des tours, continua t il , je veux faire en sorte que les choses disparaissent, j'ai regardé dans le magazine des cartes sur la magie, mais je n'ai rien trouvé;

Hello Here4u,

I - Into English
1 – Though he enjoys others having problems and could even knock a man on the ground, don’t approve the stupid idea he puts forward
2 – You are not that young and should do it gently for you seem exhausted. Don’t wait for the inevitable to come and take care of yourself
3 – Don’t blame this man for this disaster, you alone will have to answer for all that. Besides, many of the tracks you pointed out were proved to be dead ends.
4 – Compared with last month statement the last two figures only have changed and frankly it’s the thickness of the line. I was expecting a stronger change.
5 –The snow blocked us inside ! However relaxed my husband may appear, there’s nothing to be done, he fools no one. To play ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ won’t soothe my nerves

I – Into French
Fiction is on the third floor” she said “and biography is on the second. I recognized her, she read Georgette Heyer and biographies of royalty and returned books so saturated with cigarette smoke I imagined she exhaled over each page on purpose. At the end of the visit, the tall boy came up to talk.
“I want a book” he said, “about being a magician”
“What sort of magician ? Like Merlin ?”
“No, he said. He put his hands on the circulation desk. His fingernails were cleaner than an ordinary eleven-year-old’s ; his mother was then still alive. “Just tricks, he said. I want to make things look like they disappear. I looked at the card catalog under magic, but I didn’t find anything”.
“Try conjuring, I told him. We found only one book

III – Playing with words
I WARN you, guys, under no CIRCUMSTANCES can you use your PROPER equipment, ACTUALLY, you must follow my ADVICE and HAND your work to me and remember, the LEAST you take care the most dangerous it can be, that’s TRUE !

IV – Correcting (or trying to…)
After weeks of a heat wave it was a relief that the temperature has dropped by at least 10 degrees in one day. Nigel had been dreaming of the coolness of a pool but was worried about his swimming trunks. They were long, much too long and he was afraid the attendant would not let him in – as rules stated – He did not like to break the rules and felt embarrassed when he went into the water. When into it he’ll be more comfortable and will be able to swim and swim..

Long and tough but I must be sort of masochist because I enjoyed it...Thank U

Hello- Corrigez moi s'il vous plaît.

Thank you for this exercise. J'ai beaucoup appris. J'attends votre correction avec impatience.

I) Translate into English:
Although he enjoys feeling pleasure at the misfortunes of others and might even kick a man when he's down, don't now applaud the dumb theory he proposes.

You are no longer a spring chicken and you should go slowly because we all know that you are at death's door. Don't await the inevitable and take care of yourself.

You can't hold that man responsible for this catastrophe, and it's you alone who will have to answer for this. Furthermore, a great many of the leads that you reported turned out to be dead ends.

4 Maxwell.
Compared to last month's statement, only the final two numbers have changed and frankly it's peanuts. I'm waiting for a bigger difference.

5 Maxwell. ...... Maxwell !
We're trapped inside by the snow! My husband is blowing it off (faire comme si quelque chose n'existait pas), pffff no big deal. He's not fooling anyone. Even being nonchalant won't calm your nerves.

IV)

AFTER weeks OF HEAT WAVES there IS RELIEF. The temperature HAS DROPPED AT LEAST ten degrees IN a day. Nigel had been dreaming OF THE COOLNESS (fraîcheur) of a POOL, but was worried ABOUT (concernant) his SWIMSUIT. It was LONG, much TOO LONG and he feared the LIFEGUARD WOULDN'T LET (laisser) him IN –the rules WERE AGAINST it- He DISLIKED BREAKING the rules and WOULD FEEL quite AWKWARD when he ENTERED THE water. When he WAS IN THE POOL, he WOULD BE comfortable and could SWIM AND SWIM… He WOULD EXPERIENCE freedom.

As much as he loves squeezing joy from other people’s problems and could even kick a man on the ground/ who’s down/, please, don’t applaud the stupid assumption he’s putting forward.

- Bien que = though/ although
Although he likes enjoying other people’s problems /troubles/ Though he enjoys others having problems/ enjoys drawing pleasure from/
- frapper un homme à terre = kick/ knock/ strike/ hit a man on the ground/ when he/ who’s down/,(j’ai préféré « a man who’s down » parce que sinon il était possible d’imaginer une performance du « frappeur » qui était, lui, au sol au moment de frapper. Dans ma phrase, l’agresseur est debout. )
- L’hypothèse stupide = the dumb assumption/ the stupid hypothesis/ the ridiculous suggestion/ .

You’re not getting any younger and should take it easy because you look as if you were at the end of your rope. Don’t go as far as the inevitable, and take care of yourself!

- « plus tout jeune » = no longer young/ not getting any younger/ no spring chicken /
- « y aller doucement » = tread carefully/ go easy on / take it easy on/ should be cautious/
- on dirait bien que tu es … = you look as if you were= "were"= forme subjonctive indiquant l’irréel => tu n’es, en réalité, pas au bout du rouleau, mais tu as l’air d’y être.
- être au bout du rouleau = at the end of the road/ at the end of his rope/ to be exhausted/ to look exhausted/ to be strung out/

Attention ! to be on a roll = avoir de la chance, être en veine/ , ce qui est TRES DIFFERENT.
-L’inévitable = The inevitable
-Prends soin de toi = prends soin de toi-même = pronom réfléchi. Tu dois prendre soin de toi-même. => yourself. Si vous laissez « take care of you » vous introduisez une autre personne à laquelle on serait en train de parler.

You can’t hold him responsible for this disaster, but you only will have to answer for all this. As a matter of fact, most of the leads you have pointed out turned out to be deadlocks…

- Rendre responsable de = to hold someone responsible/ to hold someone accountable for/ He can’t be held / accountable for this disaster= ici, le passif a été choisi (le complément devient sujet + auxiliaire être + participe passé).
- se révéler être = to turn out to be/ proved to be/
- une impasse = be deadlocks/ dead ends/ stalemates …

4 Maxwell.

Compared to last month’s statement, only the final two numbers have changed and frankly speaking it’s just a detail. I was expecting a bigger difference.

- C’est "l’épaisseur du trait" : = a drop in the ocean (compared to), a tiny fraction (of), peanuts (compared to), chicken feed (compared to), it won't even make a tiny dent in the overall budget/ just a whisker away/

-5 Maxwell.
We’re snowed in! My husband may well pretend he is relaxed, nothing can be done; he’s not fooling anyone! Even playing « the yes/no game » won’t calm my nerves down.

- Etre bloqué à l’intérieur par la neige = to be snow-bound/ trapped by snow/ snowed in!
- se la jouer = to put on an act/ to pretend to be/ is blowing it off (faire comme si quelque chose n'existait pas),
- "Il ne trompe personne" = He’s fooling nobody/ Noboby can be deceived= trompé

II) Translate into French:
« Fiction is on the third floor,» she said « And biography is on the second. I recognized her; she read Georgette Heyer and biographies of royalty and returned books so saturated with cigarette smoke I imagined she exhaled over each page on purpose.
At the end of the visit, the tall boy came up to talk.
« I want a book », he said, « about being a magician. »
« What sort of magician? » « Like Merlin?»
« No,» he said. He put his hands on the circulation desk. His fingernails were cleaner than an ordinary eleven-year-old’s; his mother was then still alive. « Just tricks, » he said. I want to make things look like they disappear. I looked at the card catalog under magic, but I didn’t find anything. »
« Try conjuring, » I told him. We found only one book."
Elizabeth MacCracken, The Giant’s House, 1996.

(4) « things look like they disappear » est un américanisme. En anglais britannique, on dirait « look as if … » ou l’on transformerait la phrase.

IV) (Je poste le 4 avant le 3 : c'est exprès !) SOS, student in need… « Holiday… » Time to help my poor students again : please…will you ?

AFTER WEEKS OF A HEAT-WAVE, here is relief, at LAST. The temperature HAS DROPPED BY ten degrees in a day.
Nigel had been dreming OF/ ABOUT the COOLness of a POOL, but was worried about his swim SUIT/ TRUNKS. It was/ They were too long, much too long, and he feared the ATTENDANT MIGHT NOT LET HIM IN. - the rules are AGAINST it- He dislikeS breaking the rules and will FEEL AWKWARD when he ENTERS THE WATER. When HE IS IN,/ he’ll be comfortable, and can swim and swim … He’LL FEEL free.

III) Playing and working with words: FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois : (to) HAND – (to) WARN – PROPER – TRUE – CIRCUMSTANCES – ADVICE – ACTUALLY – LEAST + progression parallèle.

- ACTUALLY, it's not TRUE: John HANDED her the PROPER books, WARNING her : "At LEAST, take my ADVICE : the more you'll read them, the more you'll improve your CIRCUMSTANCES" (31)

- According to CIRCUMSTANCES, I ACTUALLY want to give you ADVICE ; It is the LEAST I can do, when you HAND something over, please, I WARN you that to be PROPER, use your right hand, not the left ONE; Yes, it's TRUE. 39

- Short of PROPER evidence, we are WARNING you that you will have to take ADVICE from a lawyer who will ACTUALLY tell you what CIRCUMSTANCES are true so that you are THE LEAST bothered, as you can provide the MORE pieces of evidence as you can ; THEN, please, HAND us the file over.(53)

- I WARN you, guys, under no CIRCUMSTANCES can you use your PROPER equipment, ACTUALLY, you must follow my ADVICE and HAND your work to me and remember, the LEAST care you take, the most dangerous it can be, that’s TRUE

- ACTUALLY, under the present CIRCUMSTANCES, firstly I WARN you that you have to write a TRUE story; secondly : advice : a PROPER spelling , and thirdly :HAND me your try tomorrow; so, be sure the (LEAST)= FEWER mistakes you will write the better mark you will get.

- It is TRUE, in some particular CIRCUMSTANCES, when you have TO HAND someone a delicate or precious objet at a PROPER place, at LEAST, the more advice you will ACTUALLY give this person the fewer mistakes the WARNED person will make during that operation - 44 words

- ACTUALLY the battle was going to be lost; Napoleon sent a pressing message to Desaix, that was HANDED over at 1 p.m., WARNING his TRUE friend about the CIRCUMSTANCES in which the army was, requesting him to turn back immediately, giving him PROPER instructions where DEPLOYING his division, ADDRESSING a counter-attack and MEETING him to exchange ADVICE, thus exploiting even the LEAST chance left to reverse the situation. 68 - Reference: The Battle of Marengo of June 14, 1800 - early afternoon phase.

Triple dose de THE FORCE! You'll need it!

Sorry for any possibly remaining typo...
