Collective nouns/aide
Message de emile59 posté le 27-01-2018 à 12:33:20 (S | E | F)
Bonjour à tous
deux points de grammaire me posent problème:
- les pronoms relatifs which, who ayant pour antécédent un "collective noun"
- le pluriel et le singulier avec un "collective noun"
Je me permets de soumettre à votre correction 3 phrases que j'ai réalisées,et une quatrième que j'ai lue dans un livre et avec laquelle je ne suis pas d'accord.

1) Phrases personnelles.
a)Our football team who is playing Valenciennes tomorrow is sure of winning.
Notre équipe de football qui joue demain contre Valenciennes est certaine de gagner.

b)The sporting event is over and the team are showering but some ofthem are already ready to go home.
La rencontre sportive est terminée et les joueurs sont en train de se doucher mais certains d'entre eux sont déjà prêts pour rentrer chez eux.

c) The town council who approved the budget yesterday is criticized today by the associations.

2)phrase empruntée
There are a lot of charities which need good advice
Il y a beaucoup d'associations caritatives qui ont besoin de bons conseils.
Selon moi où l'humain est (football team, town council, association) on devrait employer WHO et non pas WHICH

MERCI à vous si vous pouvez m'éclairer sur ce sujet en ne tenant pas compte de That qui fonctionne dans tous les cas dans une relative déterminative.

Bonjour
Pour votre phrase 4, les deux se disent, which insiste plus sur l'organisme que sur les membres la composant. Which est aussi limitatif dans un sens même si that irait mieux: Only the charities which did this or that got the money.

Exemples tirée de linguee, en tapant the charities who, puis the charities which.

the public and private sectors, a number of which are here today from the health charities who were instrumental in making

It is intended that the conditions in this proposed regulation will ensure that charities who receive these gifts

It is the smaller charities who need more help

Recognising that the homeless are amongst the most needy, we work with those charities who provide support and accommodation.

The Commission's assessment will take account of advice given by organizations in the Member States, such as major charities, which have the relevant expertise.

in the Borghezio report, to look at the question of those charities which are little more than front organisations

The Department has applied the specific sanction of revocation to charities which fail to file after reasonable warnings.

To the German philosopher Johann Kaspar Spurzheim, the manners taught to children should include "the whole circle of charities which spring from the consciousness of what is due to their fellow human beings.

Donc, il est difficile de s'ériger en censeur et de condamner tel ou tel camp.

Sinon oui, le principe selon lequel the team are having a shower (les individus) par rapport à the team is playing well (le collectif, le groupe) tient toujours.

a)Our football team who is playing Valenciennes tomorrow is sure of winning.
Notre équipe de football qui joue demain contre Valenciennes est certaine de gagner.
Our football team(,) who is playing against Valentiennes tomorrow (,) is sure to win

Quand vous mettez sure of, ce dont vous êtes sûr est concret, existe: I am sure of my documents. Mais on dira I am sure to win, parce que ça n'est pas encore fait:
Dictionnaire en ligne:
sure of [sth] adj + prep (certain of [sth]) sûr de [qch] adj + prép
Only reply if you are sure of the answer.

sure of [sth] adj + prep (confident) (confiant) sûr de [qch] adj + prép
The athlete was sure of his skills.
L'athlète était sûr de ses moyens.

I think that is excellent - now we are sure to win. (linguee)
On April 9th, 2009 A. Bouteflika is sure to win the presidential elections,(linguee)

b)The sporting event is over and the team are showering but some of them are already ready to go home.
ok.

c) The town council who approved the budget yesterday is criticized today by the associations. ok mais which se trouve sous linguee, personnellement, j'aurais mis which, plaçant l'institution avant les membres la composant:
Linguee:
After some investigations, it turns out that the town council, which rather favours the project as it gives the city a modern...

Si je tape the council who sous linguee, je peux trouver:
The application will now be sent to the European Parliament and the Council who have to approve the release of the funds.
Mais je tombe surtout sur des exemples où les individus membres du conseil sont cités comme:
he acts as the spokesperson for those members of the Council who are opposed to the interests of European workers.

avec which, les exemples sont plus nombreux.
First occupied by stilt houses, the district was gradually cleaned up by the town council which strengthened the ground

The 'Urban Bureau' works for and reports to the town council, which is re-evaluated in the next chapter as an important urban parliament.

Si je devais traduire: le tribunal qui condamna.... résultats sous linguee en tapant the court which, puis the court who
Linguee:
News reports from all over the world suggest that her final appeal hearing, before the Sharia court which condemned her to death by stoning, will take place tomorrow.

the Supreme Court sent the affair back to the court in Relizane which condemned him once again.

avec who, il n'y en a qu'un dont on n'est pas sûr, donc je pense que l'institution l'emporte sur les juges pris comme individus humains.
The villagers made a collective complaint to the European Court of Human Rights, who condemned the Turkish state for this misconduct.

2)phrase empruntée
There are a lot of charities which need good advice
Il y a beaucoup d'associations caritatives qui ont besoin de bons conseils.
Selon moi où l'humain est (football team, town council, association) on devrait employer WHO et non pas WHICH. Oui, mais c'est une question de point de vue; Moi, quand j'entends charities, je pense plus à l'institution qu'aux individus. Dans le domaine du sport, c'est différent, surtout avec le mot team où tous les membres sont dans la même activité de jeu.

C'est le même problème avec: A man is helping the police with their investigation, où on privilégie les individus.

Bonjour,
Pour répondre à votre question, je me réfère à l'ouvrage Advanced English Grammar, A Linguistic Approach d'Ilse Depraetere et Chad Langford.
"A collective noun is one that can have plural reference in its singular form. Such nouns characteristically refer to entities made up of several members: family, government, team. (...)
In English, then, the verbs of such collective NP Subjects can show either formal agreement (agreement with the singular form of an NP) or notional, referential agreement (agreement with the plural notion referred by that NP)."
NP = Noun Phrase = syntagme/groupe nominal
En d'autres termes, le verbe qui accompagnera un "collective noun" pourra être au singulier comme au pluriel.
Ex: His family is/are coming to spend the holidays with him.
The enemy was/were approaching - they had to act fast.
Vous pourrez ainsi dire "Our football team who is/are playing against Valenciennes" ou "the team is/are showering".
Ensuite, vous ne pouvez normalement pas utiliser who pour quelque chose d'inanimé (un objet, autre chose qu'une personne). Or, et c'est là que ça se complique, il est possible d'utliser who pour des "collective human nouns" (donc il y a toujours cet aspect "humain"). Gardez en tête néanmoins qu'un collective noun reste, par définition, au singulier (donc dans le cas de l'exemple que vous donnez avec charities, l'emploi de which est justifié).
Ex: Nicola phoned the fire brigade, who then alerted the police and social workers.
Je vous invite à consulter cette page pour plus de précisions: Lien internet

J'espère avoir été assez clair et que ces quelques lignes vous seront utiles.
Cordialement,
Rémi
