Vocabulaire/claim
Message de floriandx posté le 18-05-2020 à 03:41:43 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,
j'ai une question de vocabulaire car sur ma dernière expression écrite ma professeur m'a fait une remarque en me notant "Vocabulaire " à côté d'un passage que j'ai écrit et a souligné "who claim" dans le passage suivant :
" The first scenario is that nothing much will change even with people who claim the consequences on human rights and the threatening power of the algorithm."
Donc je voulais savoir pourquoi, est-ce que ça ne se dit pas "who claim" ?
Merci d'avance pour votre réponse
Bonne journée

Hello.
Did you check the dictionary for the meaning of claim? Lien internet

Here is an example of a sentence with "people who claim"...
There are many people who claim that they were cured by taking Vitamin C. (That is what they say, but is it true? Is there any support for this claim?)

Hello,

The best thing for you to do is find another verb that can be used with the two direct objects since "claim" doesn't suit here.

Hello,
"The best thing for you to do is find another verb"...
Je suis étonné par l'emploi de l'infinitif sans to ici. Comme on le voit bien ici, Lien internet
, "the best thing to do is..." ne fait pas partie des cas qui appellent l'infinitif sans to, du moins pas à ma connaissance. J'aurais mieux vu "is to find", mais peut-être que je me trompe, et dans ce cas, je veux bien qu'on m'explique.

Hello; "to" appeared before "do", so no need to repeat it before "find".

See you.

Bonjour

On trouve les deux constructions en faisant un tour chez linguee, mais il y a une prédominance de "to"

Le construction de Willy ne m'apparait pas erronée mais fluide, orale, anglaise. the best thing for you to do is remplace you should en quelque sorte.

Même si nul n'est à l'abri d'une coquille, Willy étant un membre gold, ex prof d'anglais je crois, venir le titiller sur cette construction, c'est un peu comme demander à Einstein s'il ne se serait pas un peu trompé sur la relativité ! Mais quand j'ai lu sa remarque, je n'ai même pas vu l'absence du to, comme quand on lit des textes aux lettres inversées mais pourtant parfaitement compréhensibles.

Quant à
" The first scenario is that nothing much will change even with people who claim the consequences on human rights and the threatening power of the algorithm."
to claim, c'est réclamer,ou clamer au sens de crier, je suppose que le verbe recherché était plutot to denounce, to expose, to underline, to put forward...

Hello,

Pour ceux et celles qui auraient encore un doute, je viens de faire une recherche dans mon livre de référence :"Practical English Usage" de Michael Swan (OUP).
281 (5) page 257 : Infinitives without "to" : "Expressions like "All I did was", "What I do is" etc can be followed by an infinitive without "to".
- All I did was (to) give him a little push.
- What a fire-door does is (to) delay the spread of fire.

Oui, la construction est bien plus légère et vient automatiquement à l'esprit !
