On the bit
Message de mari0n posté le 27-04-2009 à 12:12:17 (S | E | F)

Bonjour,

J'ai lu Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf d'E. Albee et il y a un passage qui me pose problème. Dans un des actes, Martha reproche à George d'employer l'expression "on the bit" et lui répond "What kind of language is that ?". Si quelqu'un pouvait m'expliquer pourquoi...
Merci.

Hi,
'On the bit' is used for horses. It means submission to the rider's reins, through the bit. Without the whole context, I imagine that he wasn't talking about horses, but was using the expression for a woman. That would explain why she got annoyed. I'm just speculating. Could you give us a few more lines?

Hello,
...they are expecting guests...

When the doorbell rings, George asks her to refrain from mentioning their mythical child while the guests are there:

George: Just don't start in on the bit about the kid, that's all.
Martha: What do you take me for?
George: Much too much.
Martha: Yeah? Well I'll start in on the kid if I want to.
Martha: Just leave the kid out of this.
George: I'd advise against it, Martha.
As she explodes and yells "GODDAMN YOU!" at him, he flings open the door and there stand their younger invited guests arriving for a nightcap.

Hope this helps.

Oui, c'est bien ça. Et un peu avant elle lui dit : "You imitating one of your students, for God's sake ? What are you trying to do ? WHAT BIT ?"

In this case, "bit" simply means the little "thing", in this case the story about the kid.

To "start in" means, in this context, to start a converstion, to start talking about a certain subject.

(This applies to the conversation posted by Lucile. I would need more context to know what "WHAT BIT?" is referring to.)

En fait, la phrase que j'ai postée vient juste avant le passage mis en ligne par Lucile83. Ca donne :

GEORGE (...) : all right, love...whatever love wants. [Stops.] Just don't start on the bit, that's all.
MARTHA : The bit ? The bit ? What kind of language is that ? What are you talking about ?
GEORGE : The bit. Just don't start in on the bit.
MARTHA : You imitating one of your students, for God's sake ? What are you trying to do ? WHAT BIT ?
GEORGE: Just don't start in on the bit about the kid, that's all.
MARTHA: What do you take me for?
GEORGE: Much too much.
MARTHA: Yeah? Well I'll start in on the kid if I want to.
GEORGE: Just leave the kid out of this.

Hello travis,
You can read the story in the link I gave; they invented the existence of a child and he tells her not to talk about that in front of their guests;but of course she does !
We may understand the sentence
Just don't start in on the bit about the kid, that's all.
as if he told her not to go as fast as a horse and speak about the child as soon as possible in the evening, in other words :
keep silent about the kid, don't hasten to talk about it/him (as the kid doesn't exist George uses 'it' or 'him', he doesn't know what to do exactly).
Well, I am not going to study the whole story here
Best wishes.

travis...enfin une explication claire...ce que ça peut être énervant de ne pas comprendre parfaitement le sens d'un texte!!
and lucile too.

I've never heard of "on the bit" as an expression, but I'm not a horse enthusiast so I'll defer to chrislondon on that point. However, from the context of the passage I'm pretty sure that the word "bit" has nothing to do with horses here.

à tous ! Sans vous, je n'aurais jamais su.

Yes, now there is a context I can see that it has nothing to do with horses! It is an expression for horses in other contexts.
