ex: He worked/ Did he work?
ex: We saw Camilla yesterday.
ex: She took a taxi three hours ago.
ex: She lived in Rome when she was a child. (...quand elle était enfant => terminé=>lived)
2- Le prétérit progressif : be + Verbe + ing => 'be + Ving'
*sert à décrire une action qui est perçue à un moment précis de son déroulement dans le passé, sans précision de limite de temps.
ex :The sun was shining, the birds were singing, the gardener was working, the visitors were sitting and chatting...
* il peut également être utilisé pour décrire un événement interrompu dans son déroulement par une autre action.ex: The gardener was working when the neighbour arrived.( =le jardinier était en train de travailler quand le voisin arriva. )
Pat/go to/the ice-rink/last night - Mum and Dad/take/the 8.15 bus/this morning - Dave/look/exhausted/yesterday night/- Mr Bailey/ride home/ last monday- I/buy/lots of chocolates/at Easter- Your children/win the game/an hour ago- All the museums/close/at 7.30/last month- He/walk to/the post-office/this morning-
- Sam had a frightening nightmare/I lost his phone number/Laura forgot her umbrella/We agreed with you/Charles brought a cake/Mum did all the rooms this morning/She had scrambled eggs for breakfast/I finished work at 8.30 last night.
3- Prétérit continu: be +Ving
What were you doing at 9 yesterday evening when you heard the shot?'
1- I /cry/ because the dog/be/dead- 2- My wife and I/ watch the new moon- 3- I/phone the police, of course! - 4- We/dig the garden- - 5- I/wait for you, Inspector- 6- We/clean old rifles- 7- I/read a detective story to my wife- 8- I/think about an alibi- (Le 8 est cuit!)
4- Simple ou continu?
a- When I (meet) her, she (go) to the zoo.
b- When I (call) her, she (tell) me she (paint) all the shutters black.
c- As I (come) to him, a dog (attack) me.
d- While they (have) a barbecue in the garden, the gas cylinder (explode).
e- After they (leave), we (work) in the cellar.
f- I (sleep) when the crowing of that bloody cock (wake) me up.
g- What /you (do)/ while I (spend) my time on those exercises?
h- All of them /already/ (sunbathe) when we (turn up).
-J'ai rencontré Lisa hier > I met Lisa yesterday.
- Nous sommes arrivés à quatre heures > we arrived at four o'clock.
Il pleuvait quand nous sommes partis > it was raining when we left.
=> Traduisez ces 5 phrases:
(> 'oui, mamy!' )

Exception: avec le verbe "to be" on n'utilise pas le verbe auxiliaire DO pour les questions ou négations: Were you there? I wasn't there.
Mais à l'impératif négatif le DO rapparaît: Don't be there!

=> 'you told me to smile' ...
-Sous-entendu :...' 'When you precised that this time you wanted a nice photo for once! ..well, sorry for my big teeth!
- I didn't ask you to laugh, did I?
- I tried to look my best!'
* J'enverrai un MP à Marit64-
* En prolongation des réjouissances : je vous proposerai de rédiger un petit texte (paragraphe) avec des consignes - et de la liberté à l'intérieur - au prétérit, pour voir si la manipulation des formes se fixe quand vous sortez du cadre rigide des exercices.( Je l'appellerai : 'A life' - The past' => je serai moins prolixe cette fois!) )

marit64 has made little jokes that are so pleasant that she won't have a MP but a loud answer! and some 'addings'...
- 'I lost his phone number!=> 'Really? did you lose his phone number?/ I am sure you didn't lose his phone number, jardin!
- We agreed with you=> (another possibility)= Did you agree with me? ( that's very kind of you!)
- Of course! I did all the rooms! And I even let the maid ( that I don't have!) watch her favourite programme on TV.
- I finished work at 8.30 last night.=>(also possible) Did you finish work at 8.30 last night? (... I saw you in a pub at 8.00...)
-I was thinking about an alibi ( = j'étais en train de penser à un alibi : cela a dû lui prendre un certain temps, indéterminé...)- (au fait :Il est cuit => He is done for/ et pas' He is cooked' )
After they left, we worked in the cellar ( actions qui se succèdent)/ on pourrait ajouter: we tidied it up, we swept the floor etc.
- What were you doing while I was spending my time on those exercises?
Réponse : 'You were sleeping'=> I was NOT sleeping, my dear, I was thinking about other exercises for you
for N°5
See you soon, marit
edith49 : nothing special except
-N°5 : I was watching a movie when she fell from her chair/ ('fell' est le prétérit de 'fall', 'felt' est le prétérit de 'feel' =

I've realized that you have a good sense of humor too and I appreciate it. Sorry for my mistakes. I think I was too tired to do this exercise last night.
You're doing a very good work on this site. We need teachers like you and lucile. ( I don't know the others.)

You will soon realise there are lots of people with plenty of good humour working on the site : it's when you 'pay a regular visit' to the different 'forum' that you realise how numerous they are actually. It's what attracted me : the certainty that you are always welcome and supported and that even when you are doing wrong - it may happen, no one is perfect- a 'smiley' winks at you, or smiles, or laughs, or plays the fool...Those 'Smileys' are so useful to have your feeling be transmitted!
Look :*'Cool-Smiley is scratching Lauging-Smiley and makes him laugh his heart out:
*Cool-Smiley is scratching 'Bored-Smiley who's beginning to hate his company:
*Cool-Smiley can't help scratching 'Sleeping-Smiley' to wake him up so that now we have a 'Bad-mood-Smiley'! As a result 'Cool-Smiley' who can't help teasing is playing the fooluntil 'Master Smiley' frown at him and threaten him to be punished or sent to hell which is frightening!:
*I should be more serious but it's the weekend, the holiday (for my zone) and only 6.00, so one one's up yet...

To floral:
Have a look at ex N°2: Nous ne nous sommes pas bien comprises: Tu as construit des phrases interro-négatives : ( elles sont 'bonnes' d'ailleurs!)
-Didn't Sam have a frighening nightmare?
*Je m'attendais à des négations banales :
-Sam didn't have a frightening nightmare (la couleur était redevenue bleue pour imposer l'emploi de did à la forme interrogative et de didn't à la forme négative).
- Did
- Did we agree with you last night?
Traduction (N° 5)
- Did you go to town yesterday?
- You told me to smile. ( you have told me to smile = le present perfect, qui était hors sujet ici)
A bientôt.
