Ex 332/ (Version) My Uncle T
Message de here4u posté le 02-10-2026 à 18:29:42 (S | E | F)
Hello dears,

Voici notre nouvelle rencontre avec un personnage inconnu... Qu'allez-vous en penser ?

Translate into French, please:

Three years ago, in Ireland, Vincent sat in his bedroom sending letters all over the world’s oceans,
messages in bottles, appeals for rescue.
I am twenty-two years old and have just completed an Honors English Literature degree at the Queen’s
University of Belfast. I am anxious to live abroad. Resident clerk in the Shan States, shipping aide
in Takoradi, plantation overseer in British Guiana- any job, anywhere which would exorcise the future
then facing him : a secondary school in an Ulster town, forty lumps of boys, waiting at forty desks,
rain on the window panes, two local cinemas, a dance on Saturday nights.
Back with the foreign postmarks, the forms replies, the we-regret-to-inform- you’s, came a letter
signed ‘UncleT’. A letter in answer to Vincent’s veiled appeal to a never-seen uncle who was now,
Vincent’s mother said, a partner in a New York publishing firm. The letter contained a fifty-dollar
money order. The writer regretted that he could not suggest any job at that time, but hoped that,
relations established, he and Vincent would keep in touch.
They kept in touch. Even for a young iconoclast there was comfort in the precedent. And what better
precedent than Uncle Turlough Carnahan, who, like himself, had published poems in undergraduate
magazines, who had once formed a university Socialist club, and who, (again like Vincent) had left
his parents’ house forever after a bitter anticlerical dispute? Vincent wanted to escape from Ireland.
Uncle Turlough lived in America. Vincent dreamed of some sort if literary career. Uncle Turlough, by
all accounts, had achieved it. Was it any wonder then that this relative was the one Vincent boasted
of to his bride?
