Hello everyone,

I am just wondering what an Adam window is. I found the word in Cakes and Ale, a book from Somerset Maugham :
"It was room of some size, very clean and white, with an Adam window."

Hello,

It seems to me' Adam windows´ is the name of specialised stores , after the name of a man, their creator I assume . Adam windows centres are the places where you can find and have all windows you wish installed in your home . Double-glazed ( I doubt it existed in Maugham's times) , special designed windows ( what he must have been referring to ) ...and they also do conservatories .
You would not translate it as it is a brand . We have the same problem with Velux , in France , frigidaire and ...guillotine !
Moreover , when you come across the term bow- window, you would not translate it as ' fenêtre en saillie avec arc de cercle' . French people are getting more and more used to the English term . We say 'une bow-window' , don't we ?
Hope this helps , as a member of the Adams ( family) would . I'll search for a picture of an Adam window on the net , anyway .
