Ex 135/ hard to connect
Message de here4u posté le 30-06-2018 à 18:41:53 (S | E | F)
Hello dear Friends,

Still without an Internet connexion on my laptop...

Good thing I had anticipated this and will be able to give you both your collective correction and your new exercise. it's a as usual and the correction should be online on Monday, July 16th.

Here are your usual translations and "Playing with words"...
Thanks for being so faithful, going on "working" even when others are having a rest... but I know you're having fun while "working"...

I) Translate into English:
Merci Maxwell!

II) Translate into French:
(a sequel to the former text...)
Lucy was so angry that for a few moments she didn’t know what to say.
« Too old? Don’t talk stupid. How can you be too old to study? »
« You’ll feel out of it amongst all them kids. You’re old enough to be their mother. »
« What, at twenty-nine? I think it’s you that could do with going to university to learn some maths. »
‘Don’t be so smart. You know what I mean. »
« What’s age got to do with it, anyway? There were pensioners taking courses at night school. »
« That’s different though, isn’t it? They’ve nothing better to do with their time. »
« And have I? »
« Of course you have. You have a house to run and a family to look after, for a start. »
« Do you call that better? »
Lucy shocked herself when she said it. But she had been hurt and she wanted to hurt back. It was Phil’s turn to be angry now. »
« Yes, I do! Don’t we mean anything to you, then, me and the kids? »

…. (III) optional :
invent 2 opposite answers to this question by Lucy: a negative one, and an affirmative one. (no more than 25 words each)
Barry Hines, Unfinished Business.

IV) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy but MUST remain verbs!), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, search your minds, think hard and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively! PLEASE, WHEN YOU WRITE YOUR SENTENCE, PUT CAPITALS TO THESE WORDS!
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
- (To) SLIDE - (to) WIPE - a FAN - ICE-CREAM (=1)- ROTTEN - SUPERFLUOUS - UNTIL - NEVER + un superlatif irrégulier.

Bon courage à tous! THE FORCE is with YOU!

« Too old? Don’t talk stupid. How can you be too old to study?

Do you call that better ?
' yes, it's better for our children, they need your presence to be helped with lessons, and just to feel you are HERE for them, just that. 26

No, I think it's better if our sons see their mother able to learn at any age, in place of staying at home, all day long. 26

NEVER forget THE BEST advice with these temperatures, nothing is less SUPERFLUOUS than a FAN, otherwise, sweat SLIPS on the skin, like an ICE CREAM from its cone or ROTTEN fruit and you have to WIPE your face constantly, UNTIL THE end of time... 44

Thanks a lot HERE4U, It's always a pleasure working with you.

Hello Here4U :-)

Thanks again, it was a real pleasure, as ever! I'm sure I'll learn some vocabulary with your correction!

I) Translate into English:
For what I shall do (with it), we might as well live in a carboard shelter... Even though it's not the same luxury as here, I'd be as happy as I am now!

Don't worry... I was lagging behind at your age too... That doesn't mean it will last forever.

"When there's a will, there's a way. Have the fight in you! Work twice as hard! Chop chop!" The future had grown dimmer but they busied themselves on all fronts, to fight tooth and nail for their company.

She helped him to his feet and out of harm's way but he let himself drop back down into unconsciousness.

II) Translate into French:

Lucy was so angry that for a few moments she didn't know what to say.

"Trop vieille? Ne dis pas de bêtises. Comment peut-on être trop vieille pour étudier?"

III) Optional:

"How dare you talk like that! Have you borne and raised our children? You were never there when I needed you!"
"You do mean a lot, but I was hoping you'd be kind enough to help me run the house and look after our children..."

IV) Playing with words:
ROTTEN luck, while Helen was SLIDING the ICE-CREAM to me, it fell on my MOST beautiful dress, so I WIPED it then washed it UNTIL it got clean ; it's SUPERFLOUS to say that I could NEVER be a FAN of Helen again... (43)

I) Translate into English:
For all I care, we might as well be living in a cardboard box… Even if it’s not the same luxury as it is here, I’d be as happy as l am now.

- pour ce que j’ai à en faire = For all I care/ (éviter les traductions mot à mot ...)
- On pourrait aussi bien = we might as well…
- Pas le même luxe que = not the same luxury as… // aussi heureuse que … = as happy as …

Don’t worry, I too was behind the curve when I was your age... This does not mean you’re going to be that way forever.

- J’avais un métro de retard = to be running late/ to be slow on the uptake/ be slow to catch on/ to be behind the curve/
- Moi aussi, j’avais = I too was behind…/ me too/
- avoir ton âge = to BE one’s age. / he’s not my age/ he’s my junior/ senior/ my senior by 2 years= 2 ans de plus que moi.

"When there's a will, there's a way! Have the fight in you! Work twice as hard! Chop chop!" As future prospects had grown dimmer, they busied themselves on all fronts to fight tooth and nail for their company.

- "Quand on veut, on peut." = Surtout, ne pas traduire mot à mot … C’est un idiome ! « When/Where there’s a will, there’s a way ! » = Quand il y a la volonté , il y a un moyen ! Lorsque l’on essaie beaucoup, l’on réussit.
- Mettez les bouchées doubles != double your efforts/ work twice as hard (= travaille « deux fois aussi dur »)/ put on a spurt/
- Et que ça saute != Move it ! / Jump to it !/ Make it snappy !/ Chop chop !

She helped him to his feet and out of danger, but he let himself sink back into unconsciousness.

- Se remettre sur pied = to get back to his/ her feet/
(to sink, I sank, sunk)

II) Translate into French:

Lucy was so angry that for a few moments she didn’t know what to say.

« And have I ? »
« Of course you have. You have a house to run and a family to look after, for a start. »
« Do you call that better ? »
Lucy shocked herself when she said it. But she had been hurt and she wanted to hurt back. It was Phil’s turn to be angry now. »

"Trop vieille ? Ne dis pas de bêtises. Comment peut-on être trop vieille pour étudier ? »

(2) un grand nombre d'entre vous n'a pas traduit "could do" (it's you that could do with ...)

IV) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

- ROTTEN luck, while Helen was SLIDING the ICE-CREAM to me, it fell on my MOST beautiful dress, so I WIPED it , then washed it UNTIL it got clean; it's SUPERFLOUS to say that I could NEVER be a FAN of Helen again... (43)

- The team first in standing, of which I’m a FAN, was WIPED out by the WORST one of the league; any comment is SUPERFLOUS, but UNTIL now, I’ve NEVER been so disgusted and, last but not least, the ICE-CREAM I bought at the stadium SLID out of its cone, staining my trousers. (68)

- UNTIL the end of my teenage years I WAS SLIDING into bad habits: I was a pastry FAN and every night I used to get up, go to the kitchen, open the cupboard and devour a package of biscuits, it's SUPERFLUOUS to say that I was feeling more and more ROTTEN until that unforgettable night when my mother caught me while I was in the dark, in my pyjamas, sucking a delicious ICE CREAM; she yelled and gave me THE WORST EARBASHING ever ; (I’ll never NEVER forget it, but seing my contrite face she decided to WIPE the slate clean ..... (96)

- NEVER forget THE BEST advice with these temperatures; nothing is less SUPERFLUOUS than a FAN, otherwise, sweat SLIPS on the skin, like an ICE CREAM from its cone or ROTTEN fruit and you have to WIPE your face constantly, UNTIL THE end of time... (44)

- During these scorching and ROTTEN days, it wasn't SUPERFLUOUS to get a touch of freshness near the FAN: I was running with sweat, and tears were SLIDING down my face; so I WIPED my body UNTIL I asked for soft serve ICECREAM; I shouldn't have eaten because it was the WORST thing to get a headache : NEVER again! (62).

- There was a ROTTEN heat wave, Lisa ate an ICE-CREAM to refresh herself, then plug in a rickety FAN which fell, made Lisa SLIDE on the wet floor; WIPING her forehead with her handkerchief, she realized that her injury was SUPERFLOUS superficial; then she thought: I could avoid the WORST

Merci pour votre travail et encore BRAVO !
