Bonjour.
Je vous propose de traduire « assez » dans chacune des phrases suivantes.
Vous devrez utiliser enough, quite, rather.
Prenez garde à la place de enough !!
We haven't got enough big nails.

Niveau :
Correction : samedi 29 septembre 2007.
1- John n'était pas assez grand pour aller à l'école.
2- Et c'est là que les choses sont devenues assez compliquées.
3- Le temps fut meilleur que nous ne l'avions espéré. Il fit une assez belle journée.
4- C'est un emploi assez bien payé, mais c'est un travail assez pénible.
5- Laura se demandait si elle aurait assez d'argent pour payer ses vacances.
6- Vous croyez que Phil est vraiment assez qualifié pour ce type d'emploi ?
7- Tu ne crois pas que tu a assez travaillé aujourd'hui ?
8- Il n'y avait pas assez de billets pour tout le monde.
9- Ce fut un exercice assez facile, n'est-ce pas ?
10-J'en ai assez dit comme çà !

Voici quelques remarques grammaticales.
I - place de enough.
a - DEVANT UN NOM : we have enough WORK for a month.
b - APRÈS L'ADJECTIF OU L'ADVERBE : He is not STRONG enough.
Remarque : Il peut être employé SEUL, et dans ce cas, c'est un pronom.
- « Would you like some more cake ? »
- « No, thanks, I've had enough.
Notez les expressions :
Enough is enough ──► Trop c'est trop.
That's enough of that ──► Çà suffit !
I've had enough of you ──► J'en ai assez de toi.
II- Quite
Quite est ambigu en anglais britannique.
En effet il possède deux sens :
a - Quite = tout à fait , complètement
- en particulier avec certains adjectifs non graduables ( non-gradable adjectives)
amazing, amazed, certain, different, impossible, right , true , wrong, clear, incredible, obvious, safe, unnecessary , extraordinary,
« What she said was quite wrong » ──► Ce qu'elle a dit était complètement faux.
- et avec certains verbes tels que agree, understand.
« I quite agree with your suggestion » ──► je suis tout à fait d'accord avec votre suggestion.
« I quite understand your feelings but,...» ──► Je comprends tout à fait vos sentiments mais,..
b - Quite = plutôt / assez dans les autres cas.
« It' quite cold » ──► Il fait plutôt /assez froid.
Remarque :
Quite se place avant le groupe a/an + nom
« It's quite a long way » C'est assez loin .
ATTENTION !
En anglais américain quite a toujours le sens de complètement, tout à fait, vraiment.
« It's quite cold » ──► Il fait vraiment froid.
III- Distinction entre QUITE et RATHER.
Rather et quite signifient assez / plutôt, cependant on utlise
a - rather principalement avec des mots à connotation négative,
b - quite pour exprimer des idées positives.
The car goes QUITE well but it's RATHER noisy.
Geoges is QUITE a hard worker but he's RATHER slow.
