Bonjour.

L'objet de ce thème grammatical a pour but de mettre en application vos connaissances sur le régime des verbes anglais.

Un verbe qui suit directement un autre verbe peut être à l'infinitif complet, au gérondif ou à l'infinitif sans to (emplois limités. Les plus courants sont : auxiliaires de modalité, I had better, I would rather , to see, to hear, to feel, to help)

Par exemple :

We expect to be back on Sunday ──► Nous pensons
rentrer dimanche.

I loathe waiting ──► J'ai horreur d'attendre.

I helped him finish the job ──► Je l'ai aidé à terminer le travail.

Certains verbes tels que : to enjoy, to mind, to resent , to object to , I cannot stand, sont toujours suivis du gérondif.

I enjoyed seeing you again ──► J'ai eu plaisir à vous revoir.
I object to being treated like a child ──► Cela me déplaît qu'on me traite comme un enfant.

D'autres comme to want, to hope, to plan, to attempt sont suivis d'un infinitif complet.

I hope to see you there ──► J'espère vous y voir.
He attempted to escape ──► Il tenta de s'échapper.

Cependant certains verbes sont suivis d'un infinif ou d'un gérondif suivant le sens que l'on veut donner à la phrase.

I must remember to post the letter tomorrow.
Il ne faut pas que j'oublie de mettre la lettre à la poste demain.

I remember posting it last night.
Je me rappelle l'avoir mise à la poste hier soir.

─ Je n'aime pas marcher sous la pluie ! Quand nous arrêterons-nous pour boire quelque chose. Je suis assoiffé.
─ Dès que tu arrêteras de gémir! Marcher, même par tous les temps, est bon pour la santé.
─ Tu trouves que c'est bon pour la santé d'attraper un rhume,surtout en cette période d'épidémie ? Je n'ai jamais compris les gens qui pensent jusfier les situations désagréables dont ils sont responsables.
─ Mais moi, je ne pense pas que cette promenade soit désagréable! Tu n'arrêtes pas de te plaindre, tandis que moi, je m'amuse bien. Après tout tu n'étais pas obligé d'accepter quand je t'ai proposé de m'accompagner.
─ C'est vrai, je n'aurais pas dû. Franchement je regrette d'être venu. Je ne supporte pas de marcher par un temps aussi humide, et ton optimisme me déprime.
Regarde ! Il y a un village là-bas. Plus que dix minutes de marche, et nous y serons. Il doit sûrement y avoir un café. Et si on s'arrêtait pour y prendre une bière ?

- Do you think that is good for health to catch a cold, especially during this period of epidemic ? I've never understood people who think of justifying unpleasant situations which they are responsible .
- But I don't find this walk unpleasant ! You don't stop complaining, whereas I'm enjoying myself . You didn't have to accept after all when I suggested that you come with me .
- To tell the truth, I shoudn't have . Frankly I wish I had not come (or I regret having come) . I can't stand walking in such a humid weather and your optimism depresses me . Look ! Over there is a village . Only ten minutes of walk and we are there . There must be a pub . What about stopping to have a beer ?

I have never understood people who try to defend for unpleasant situations which they are responsible.

After all, you were not obliged to come with me when I suggested the outing.

1-Des verbes tels que :
Begin, forget , hate, like, love, regret, remember, start, stop, mean (avoir l’intention de), try, I can’t bear, dread( redouter de) admettent deux constructions.

Ils se construisent avec un infinitif complet, lorsqu’ils renvoient à un acte spécifique ou à une situation spécifique. Lorsqu’ils expriment des réactions habituelles, des goûts constants, ou décrivent des situations connues ou en cours, ils sont suivis du gérondif.

Voici des exemples :
Stop talking ! (la personne est déjà en train de parler)
He stopped to talk to me. (Il s’est arrêté dans le but de me parler)

I like dancing. ( Je pratique cette activité)
I’d like to dance with you. (l’action n’est pas encore réalisée)

2-Le verbe qui suit to go, to come, to stop est souvent introduit par «and». Les deux verbes étant au même temps.
Come and see us tonight.──► Venez nous voir ce soir.
We’ll go and spend a week in Ireland .──► Nous irons passer une semaine en Irlande.

On retrouve cet emploi avec le verbe to try :
Do try and understand. ──► Essayez donc de comprendre.
Expression bien connue :
« Wait and see » Attendez la suite des événements.

3-Ne pas oublier la préposition FOR après responsible.
Dans un registre plus soutenu, on dirait : « For which they are responsible.»

4-La tournure « be + participe présent » peut prendre une valeur fréquentative, quand elle est accompagnée d’un adverbe comme always , for ever, perpetually.
À cette idée de fréquence s'ajoute aussi une idée d’obstination.
« He was always asking the same questions.» ──► Il posait toujours les mêmes questions.

5-« must not » s’emploie pour une interdiction. L’absence de nécessité s’exprime à l’aide de « need not» ou « don’t have to»
«He doesn’t have to get up at six every morning .»

Moins employés que «to have to» «to be obliged to » et «to be compelled to» insistent davantage sur l’idée de contrainte.
He was compelled to sell his house in order to pay his debts.
Il dut (fut containt) de vendre sa maison pour payer ses dettes.

6-To regret : regretter.
a- Être aux regrets de devoir faire quelque chose :
I regret to inform you that your application has been rejected.
J’ai le regret de vous informer que votre candidature n’a pas été retenue.

b- regretter une action que l’on a faite.
I regret having been rude to her.
Je regrette d’avoir été grossier envers elle.

Dans ce sens on peut alors employer la tournure :
I wish + Verbe (au past perfect)

Attention à la construction !
I wish he had come. Je regrette qu’il ne soit pas venu.
I wish he hadn’t come. Je regrette qu’il soit venu.

Je regrette que tu n’aies pas vérifié les résultats.
I wish you had checked the results.

7- I Can’t stand et I can’t bear sont des expressions équivalentes.
I can’t stand est toujours suivi d’un V-ing.
I can’t bear peut être suivi d’un V-ing ou d’un infinitif complet.

I can’t bear to see you like that !
L’énonciateur trouve intolérable ce qu’il voit dans cette situation particulière.(cf remarque 1)

Attention !
Weather [U]. Il faut donc écrire : In such humid weather.

8- Pour indiquer une durée on peut employer le génitif.
A ten minutes’ break : un arrêt de dix minutes.
On dit aussi , construction de plus en plus courante : a ten-minute break.

9 - Comme je l’ai précisé dans mon sujet précédent « be bound to» exprime une probabilité très forte, l’idée de l’inévitable.

It was bound to happen.──► Cela devait arriver.
She’s bound to come back sooner or later.──► Il est certain qu’elle reviendra tôt ou tard.

Dans le sujet proposé ici «must» et «should» peuvent être aussi employés, mais il sont moins forts que «be bound to.»

10- Lorsque l’on fait une suggestion ou que l’on propose quelque chose on peut employer shall.

Shall we go to the pictures ? Si nous allions au cinema ?

On peut aussi employer l’expression :
