Exercice 30 / Voyons donc !
Message de here4u posté le 06-02-2015 à 12:56:18 (S | E | F)
Exercice 30 : Voyons donc !

Here is what you're asking for... A few exercises to go on torturing your minds for a few minutes (or hours ...) I'd say it's a (if you don't systematically choose the easy way out for N°I ...)
Remember that you're totally FREE to do what you fancy and give up what you don't like ... The collective correction will be posted on Sunday, February 15th. (Please indicate the changes you make in blue or in mps. )

I) Complete the sentences in the way you fancy… (Watch your grammar!)(You may choose 'a mood'! )

1) We’ll be at the station to meet you provided that…………..
2) You’re not going to feel better unless……………….
3) You’d better exercise regularly, otherwise ………………..
4) A lot of people install alarms in their homes, in case ………………..
5) Since he arrived in this school, he ………………………………
6) For the last ten days, we ……………………………….
7) I left college ………… Since then I ……………..
8) Since the beginning of the New Year ……………..

II) Translate into English:

III) Translate into French:

"Oh! Alice in Wonderland. You're too big for that."
Cathy said, "I can get to be so little you can't even see me."[...]
Her mother said angrily, "Stop making jokes. I don't know what you're thinking of. What does Miss Fancy think she is going to do?"
"I don't know yet," said Cathy. I think I'll go away."
"Well, you just lie there, Miss Fancy, and when your father comes home he'll have a thing or two to say to you."
Cathy turned her head very slowly and looked at her mother. Her eyes were expressionless and cold. And suddenly Mrs Ames was afraid of her daughter. She went out quietly and closed the door. In her kitchen she sat down and cupped her hands in her lap and stared out of the window.

John Steinbeck, East of Eden, 1952

OR: If you don't feel like translating into French, you may 'imagine Cathy's thoughts and intentions in 50 words (+ or - 5). Have fun!

Thanks for this pleasant exercise dear Here4U . I'm finished
I
1) We’ll be at the station to meet you provided that my monthly parent-teacher meeting doesn't last too long.
2) You’re not going to feel better unless you listen to what the doctor said : stay in bed, calm down and eat lightly.
3) You’d better exercise regularly, otherwise not only will you grow fat but you may also get out of breath while walking very soon.
4) A lot of people install alarms in their homes, in case burglars should try and rob their valuables while away.
5) Since he arrived in this school, he has never been able to make friends with anyone, no matter how hard he tries. Too bad !
6) For the last ten days, we've been packing and cleaning the apartment, and now, at last, we're ready to move into a home of our own !
7) I left college the day I decided I was old enough to live my own way : that was 2 years ago. Since then, I've been trying to make a living out of small jobs. Now, I realise it was a mistake and that I shouldn't have left school that early.
8) Since the beginning of the New Year, I've already read three books, two of which were recommended by my English teacher, here4U.

II.
- We've got used to living in a tiny apartment. This one is much too roomy...
- I remember saying that to him, but he can't remember anything ! It's always the same !
- It's more interesting to work rather than to do nothing... OK ! Doing nothing, like some women in their hammock, is less tiring !
- I don't mind your keeping the key provided you tell me about your visit (or : provided you warn me about your coming)
- Whichever way you('ll) choose, I'm sure I'll get there before you !

III.
"Oh (, franchement)! Alice au pays des merveilles. Tu as passé l'âge !"

Oh!

Composition in 50 words (+or – 5)
Cathy is reproached by her mother for getting lost in her odd thoughts and is warned not to move out of her room, because the father, who is coming home, will have something to tell her.
Cathy has no intention to obey her hated mother. She is thinking about how to escape from there.

I really enjoyed myself in doing this nice exercise,
And I would be glad,
If the Mentor could get ready,
Another demanding one,
In a very short time.

Hello dear Here4u!
Here's my work, at last!

I) Complete the sentences in the way you fancy...(watch your grammar!)

1) We'll be at the station to meet you provided that you're happy to see us!

2) You're not going to feel better unless you give up spending your nights doing English!

3) You'd better exercise regularly, otherwise you may put on weight...

4) A lot of people install alarms in their homes, in case they are burgled / in case of fire.

5) Since he arrived in this school, he's always been at the top of his class.

6) For the last ten days, we have been sorting out all the stuff stored in the cellar and putting the room in order. It was such a shambles!

7) I left college I can't remember when. Since then I must have done a lot of things, but I can't remember which ones either. By the way, what year is it now?

8) Since the beginning of the New Year, we have already done five exercises with Here4u...In such conditions, there is nothing to do but (to) make progress!

II) Translate into English:

We have got used to living in a really small flat. This one is too much large.

I remember telling him that, but he remembers nothing, as usual!

Working is more interesting than doing nothing... OK. ( On the other hand), doing nothing, like some girls lying in their hammocks, is definitely less tiring!

- Ça ne me dérange pas que vous gardiez la clef pourvu que vous me préveniez de votre passage.
I don't mind your keeping the key as long as I am informed when you come.

Whichever the way you're going to choose, I'm sure to arrive before you!

III) Translate into French:

" Oh ! Alice au Pays des Merveilles. Tu es trop grande pour ça."
Cathy dit :" Je peux me rendre si petite que tu pourras même pas me voir."

P.S. I must confess that I had to struggle hard against " she cupped her hands in her lap"! Not successfully, I'm afraid...
However, I thank you for this exercise, dear Here4u! Have a good weekend, in spite of our corrections!

Hello !

I) Complete the sentences in the way you fancy… (Watch your grammar!)

1) We’ll be at the station to meet you provided (that) you give us the right time of your train.

- Après provided, on utilise un indicatif. Here, I’m expressing a specific condition for my action to be realized. (provided/provided that/ providing = pourvu que.

2) You’re not going to feel better unless you decide to follow the doctors’ prescriptions.

Unless = except if ; Ici, un indicatif convenait parfaitement.

3) You’d better exercise regularly, otherwise you’ll become pot-bellied and fat…

- ATTENTION !
- ‘otherwise’ = sinon.

4) A lot of people install alarms in their homes, in case burglars might try to break into their houses.

5) Since he arrived in this school, he has always been a hardworking student.

BRAVO !

6) For the last ten days, we have been rehearsing again and again … I hope our play will be a success!

7) I left college when I graduated and decided I had had enough studying. Since then I’ve been going on a lot of business trips and become a manager.

8) Since the beginning of the New Year I have kept my resolutions and for once, I have been quite proud of it.

II) Translate into English:

- We’ve got used to living in a very little flat/apartment. This one is much too roomy.

- S’ habituer à faire = to get used to doing ; être habitué à faire = to be used to doing ; ici, j’ai considéré que je faisais un bilan d’action : après des années dans ce petit appartement, nous nous y sommes habitués => le present perfect.
- Attention à l’ordre des mots dans ‘much too roomy’ = beaucoup trop vaste. 'Much too late' ; 'much too heavy' ….

- I remember/recall telling him about this… but he can’t remember anything! As usual!/ He would do that!/That’s what he does!/ Same old-same old!

- Working is more interesting than doing nothing. Of course, I agree… Doing nothing, like some of you in their hammocks, is less tiring!

To work= in order to work= POUR travailler.
- Ahhhh ! Le pluriel concret .... que beaucoup m'ont oublié : 'Gentlemen came into the club with hats on their heads and pipes in their mouths!'

- I don’t mind your keeping the key as long as you tell me/ warn me before visiting me.

I do mind your smoking… Would you please stop!’

- Whatever way you’ll choose, I’m sure I’ll get there before you!

(1) J’ai un peu forcé le trait en mettant ‘Quoi !’ qui correspond au milieu social et à l'étonnement de Mrs Ames ;
To think of = envisager => ce que tu as prévu … ‘ce que tu as dans le crane …’ (beaucoup trop moderne !)
(12) ‘calmement’ : My apologies … I may have coloured blue a few ‘calmement’ (WHICH ARE GOOD !) One of you had copied the text and changed a few words … and at one moment, I stupidly corrected with that text in front of my eyes …
So ‘calmement’ is OK, but ‘tranquillement’ isn’t ! Being scared by Cathy, Mrs A couldn’t be ‘tranquille’ … she went out of the room as silently and calmly as possible (not to provoke her) and to the kitchen where she was thoughtful and quite petrified …

(looks like déjà-vu .., doesn't it?)

I hope you enjoyed the exercice and thank you all for your wonderful work and motivation!
