Hello, all of you ! , regular workers, newcomers and future new ones !

This is a real Don't rush... Take your time... Only one solution, please. THE solution... ! (I mean the best one, the most interesting as far as grammar is concerned ...) a) I'd never have given up if...
b) It was really the first time...
c) She has behaved in a strange way since...
d) What a pity you didn't win the competition, I really wish... )
e) Ever since I was attacked by a dog, ...

2) Translate into English:

3) Translate into French:
« Even the dullest were moved at the thought of these two persons who loved one another so much that they were prepared to sacrifice their lives. A spirit of kindliness and good will descended on the sanatorium. […] Everyone seemed to share in the happiness of the happy pair. Ivy was quietly blissful; the excitement became her and she looked younger and prettier. Templeton seemed to walk on air. He laughed and joked as if he hadn’t got a care in the world. You would have said that he looked forward to long years of uninterrupted felicity.”

Hello Here4U and thanks again for this interesting exercise I've just finished. You may correct it whenever you please Have a wonderful week !

I)
a) I'd never have given up if I had understood that she was actually still in love with me, but what she told me bluntly the last time we met led me to believe the opposite !
b) It was really the first time I had witnessed such violent fights in this usually peaceful area : what a shock that was !
c) She has behaved in a strange way since I saw her coming back home last night at 2 o'clock in the morning, penetrating very silently into her room through the window for fear she might get caught red-handed by her parents. I wonder what happened to her. I'm so worried about her !
d) What a pity you didn't win the competition, I really wish you had won your first gold medal after the fantastic short program you had performed two days ago. I'm sure you'll beat me next year, my dear ! No hard feelings, eh ?
e) Ever since I was attacked by a dog, I've been having this same horrible nightmare of a nasty sharp-teethed doberman running after me, eager to bite into my bum !

II
a) She finds it hard to help herself alone as she has always been helped her entire life...
b) Each one was trying to ensure the other one's good opinion, so they didn't stop flattering each other...
c) They hadn't seen each other for years, and during the first week, they had been talking for lots of hours at a time
d) The two bandits commited suicide when they were caught by the police. They killed themselves with their weapons.
e) Would you believe it ? This reckless driver was all the more foolish as he was driving without a licence.

III

Hello all of you !

I had told you that it was a and it was... The difficulty was especially in the different tenses you had to use... real traps, sometimes ...

Exercice 37 :

1) Complete the following sentences, adding SUBJECTS AND VERBS:

a) I'd never have given up if...you had encouraged me more!

- ‘I’d never have given up’ = I would never have given up = conditionnel passé = would + have + participe passé.

b) It was really the first time...I had met such a stupid person !

- ‘It ‘s the first time + present perfect…’ => par concordance des temps : => ‘it was the first time + past perfect’ - A APPRENDRE PAR COEUR

c) She has behaved in a strange way since...she won millions of dollars !

- ‘She has behaved = elle se comporte d’une façon étrange. Attention !

d) - 1 : ‘what a pity you didn’t win the competition, I really wish you would get the recognition you deserve very rapidly…’
- 2 : ‘what a pity you didn’t win the competition, I really wish you kept training with all your heart, and one day, success will come.'
- 3 : ‘what a pity you didn’t win the competition, I really wish you had had more luck and won it! '

(I wish + past perfect)

e) Ever since I was attacked by a dog, ...I’ve kept away from all of them…

2) Translate into English:
She finds it hard to help herself as/ while she has been waited on/served her whole life.

She finds it hard to help herself whereas her sister doesn’t mind.’
-to help = servir ; dans les magasins : ‘Can I help you?’ Aider aussi, bien sûr mais ‘Can I give you a hand?’= to help : à table : ‘help yourself!'

Each one was making sure of the other one’s good opinion/ approval; therefore, they didn’t stop/went on flattering each other.

- s’assurer = to make sure of
- Attention ! to stop + ing = arrêter de faire = arrêter l’action ; MAIS to stop TO do = s’arrêter POUR faire quelque chose.

They hadn’t seen each other for years and during the first week, they spoke to each other for hours and hours on end.

-Ils ne s’étaient pas vus (réciproquement) => past perfect + each other.
-depuis des années = durée => for
-des heures de suite = 'hours on end', mais ‘at the same time’ = en même temps.

The two villains committed suicide (took their own lives) when they were caught by the police. They killed themselves with their own guns.

Will you believe it? This reckless driver was all the more careless as he was driving without a licence/license.

- d’autant plus … que = all the more + adjectif + AS (since/because)
- il conduisait : l’action était en déroulement dans le passé => he was driving.
- derrière ‘without’, il faut mettre l’article indéfini devant les noms dénombrables singuliers => without a hat, without an umbrella...

William Somerset Maugham, Sanatorium.

‘so much that’ = tellement que

(4) the happy pair = le couple heureux.

become [sb] vtr (be in keeping with) : convenir à qqn vtr ind

It doesn't become a woman in your position to behave in that way.

(9) To care for = se soucier de ; to take care of = prendre soin de ; a care = un souci.=> ‘not a care in the world’ = pas le moindre souci …

Courage ... you can dot it, I know that !

Merci pour la correction !
Pour "the dullest", j'avais mis au début (avant de me corriger ...) : "Les moins démonstratifs". Est-ce que cela aurait pu convenir ?
