Tâche/Spaces and exchanges
Message de thivet1 posté le 26-04-2018 à 11:47:30 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,
passant mon oral du Bac d'anglais dans 10 jours j'aurais besoin de vos avis à propos de ma synthèse !! N'hésitez pas à corriger mes fautes de grammaire, de sens et surtout donnez-moi un avis constructif (véracité de mes propos, longueur, expressions plus complexes que je pourrais utiliser...);
Je vous remercie d'avance

The notion "Spaces and exchanges" deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. Our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. The different cultural, economic, sociological and language interactions have shaped and characterised our modern-day world.
To illustrate this notion I'm going to speak about immigration in America. In effect all Americans are immigrants or children of immigrants. The exception is probably the indians.
Thanks to the documents studied in class this year, we will try to answer the question: « what are the causes and consequences of immigration?  Are the expectations(waits) of the immigrants the reflection of the reality? »

Firstly, we will look at the history and the causes of the first immigrations, then we will talk about the motivations of people to immigrate to the USA,( the dangers of the trip) and why life was better for immigrants in the USA than in their country of origin. Finally we will see the differences between an immigration to the USA (there is) 400 years ago and a more contemporary emigration.

Fist and foremost many people in England were unhappy since their king, King James 1st wouldn’t let them pray to God as they liked. If they refused they were persecuted. SO, they choose to leave their native country and went far off to Holland. However in Holland they were very poor (poverty-striken) and furthermore when their children began to grow, hey became less godlike. So they decided set out for a pilgrimage to the New World. These pilgrims were escaping from poverty, political oppression, religious persecution and economic hardship.
We saw in the video of « the first Thanksgiving » that the immigrants had to face a lot of dangers and difficulties on their way to America. When pilgrims arrived on the mainland it was november, there was only snow, rocks and trees. As a result more than half of the pilgrims died. However, the Natives came to the aid of the pilgrims, they taught them to survive and to cultivate the land. Thanks to them the pilgrims stored the crops to face the winter. To thank godsfor all his godness and for the abundant blessings, the pilgrims invited the natives to a big party in Plymouth Rock, their camp.

Now we are going to see that the first wave of immigration dating from The First Thanksgiving is very different from the current immigration. The first wave of immigration could instead be seen as a wave of colonization. We studied a painting representing the banquet of the first thanksgiving between Natives and the Puritans. However we notice that the pilgrims are either seated or standing whereas the Indians are sitting on the ground. This gives an impression of superiority of the pilgrims. Furthermore we also find that during this normally pacifist celebration, several pilgrims are armed with rifles and swords, as if they were ready to defend the villagers. Here we do not have the impression that Thanksgiving symbolizes joy of loving, caring and sharing but war ! Through this idealized painting we understand that the truth has been distorted. In fact the natives became the guests and the pilgrims became the hosts while the Indians lived here for a longer time.
This is what we saw in the document "native americans history and culture". In the 1700s when Europeans settlers colonized the USA, they spread diseases like tuberculosis and has began to claim indian land for themeselves. Many of them have resisted but in the 1800s the new US government forced the remaining indians to leave their traditional homelands.

Now we will see that immigration more contemporary is totally different. We studied an extract from « On the threshold of a new world », more precisely when an immigrant arrives in Ellis Island during the middle of the new immigration wave (1880-1925). Let’s remember that Ellis Island was a US receiving station and that she was called « The isle of tears ». At that time immigrants came mainly from Eastern and Southern Europ. They may had wanted to find a way out of poverty and dictatorship, they probably wanted to blend to the melting pot. They must had expectations and dreams. However, upon arrival they are piled up like cattle and they must pass a battery of tests. Some people test the immigrants mental habilities, their capacities and health. Doctors and public health service intented to spot people with signs of illness, they seemed to be afraid that immigrants carry contagious diseases. Immigrants were chalked with differents letters, according to the possible diseases they had.

We could add that the poorest immigrants were denied the right to settle in america. After doing all the tests, to become a full-fledged US citizen, the immigrant must take a oath of allegions to the american constitutions. And even when he takes an oath, a colossal amount of questioning is asked to be sure if he is not a threat to the United States.
So we can say that during the new immigration wave to USA, immigrants were regarded as a danger to american political system.

By way of conclusion we can say that the motives for immigrations are and will always be the same: to improve their living conditions. However, colonization completely redrew the map of the North America because the settlers appropriated the lands of the natives Americans by making them leave in Indian territories. Finally, the established order had been completely change because there were lots of negative consequences for Native American. They could not do what they wanted and the settlers just wanted to take control of territories. There never had exchanges between the two societies. So, that is probably the reason why immigrations more contemporary to USA are stricter than at the time of Indians.
