Notion/Myths and Heroes
Merci d'avance !

MYTHS AND HEROES

First of all, I’d like to give a definition of myths and heroes. So, a myth can be defined as a story about gods and heroes, it can be a popular belief or a tradition or a false notion, an invented story. A hero can be a mythological figure, Achilles and Odysseus for example, a person who is admired for his or her achievements, like a patriotic or national hero : sportsman, politician, king or queen, a defender of common values. But it can also be a fictitious hero, as a superero or a film star, and maybe a role model or an icon, such as in fashion, TV or music. I’ll present this notion by focusing on the topic of heroes and antiheroes in mobster films, especially in The Godfather. Above all, we must define the term antihero. So, the antihero is a character in a fictional work that does not present some of the characteristics of the conventional hero.
Concerning this theme, the main question can be the following : Where do we draw the line between heroes and antiheroes in The Godfather ? I will take several extracts from this film, which we studied in class, to illustrate my arguments.

The members of the Corleone family are part of the Italian Mafia, which implies that they are by definition bad guys. They are big liars, as when Michael swears to Kate Adams that he is not involved in the murder of his sister's husband. They are also crooks and blackmailers. Indeed, the most frequent and representative quote of the film is « I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse ». They are also violent and sexist. In fact, women are not involved in the business of the mafia. One can quote Michael's reply: "Don’t ask me about my business, Kay ». Moreover, despite their faith, they are murderers, monsters. They have blood on their hands. For example, Michael murders Sollozzo and McCluskey during a meeting scheduled to end the conflict.

And yet, despite the fact that they don’t respect the command "You shall not murder", they’re deeply religious, very pious and good christians. They are also Robin Hood figures, they help people in need. They dispense justice when the authorities have failed, as when Vito accesses Bonasera's request or when he dispenses jobs during the Great Depression. By the way, Vito Corleone is a self-made man. His life is a success story showing the American Dream. Arrived as a migrant in America, he dies godfather of one of the most developed mafia families. Moreover, they are fearless, so they are as brave as true heroes. Then, they are great businessmen and they’re become role models, because we can really get business lessons from these characters. They have an aura, persuasive power and speaking abilities. This is illustrated for example when Michael convinces a nurse to help him move his father's bed to another room. But they are also human, and sometimes victims themselves. Indeed, Sonny is killed in his car, riddled with bullets. But the strongest trait of these characters is the fact that they are endearing. Finally, we feel sympathy for them, because they are loving parents, faithful husbands, they care for their family. To some extent, we identify with them.

The positive elements of these characters far exceed their negative ones. They are not heroes because they don’t use their strengths to serve a noble and moral cause. Nevertheless, they captivate by their qualities and their family love. They are not archetypes of antiheroes either, but can be placed in this category as negative heroes, and even heroic villains. They are double-face characters, for whom we feel sympathy, fascination and moral indignation at the same time. According to Alfred Hitchcock : « the better the villain, the better the film », so this characteristic of the Corleone family is one of the many reasons accounting for the huge success of The Godfather.

Bonsoir Lucille,
- superero

- His life is a success story showing the American Dream (il manque une fin de phrase)
- he dies (il manque des mots) godfather of one of the most developed mafia families.
- they’re become: mal construit.
- They have an aura, (article)persuasive power and speaking abilities.

Où est la conclusion?

Bonjour Laure,

- he dies as the godfather of one of the most developed mafia families.
- They have an aura, a persuasive power and speaking abilities.

La conclusion constitue le dernier paragraphe.

Bonjour Lucille,

- he dies as the godfather of one of the most developed mafia families: moi, j'aurais conjugué le verbe to die au prétérit.
