Not my butcher!
Dick was a clever boy, but his parents were poor, so he had to work in his spare time and during the holidays to pay for his education. In spite of this, he managed to get to the university, but it was so expensive to study there that during the holidays he found it necessary to get two jobs at the same time so as to earn enough money to pay for his studies.
One summer, he managed to get a job in a butcher’s shop during the day time, and another in a hospital at night. In the shop, he learnt to cut meat up quite nicely, so the butcher often left him to do all the serving while he went into a room behind the shop to do all the accounts. In the hospital, on the other hand, he was of course allowed to do only the simplest jobs, like helping to lift people and to carry them from one part of the hospital to another. Both at the butcher’s shop and at the hospital Dick had to wear white clothes.
One evening at the hospital, Dick had to carry a woman from her bed to the place where she was to have an operation. The woman was already feeling frightened at the thought of the operation before he came to get her, but when she saw Dick…that finished her.
No! No! she cried. Not my butcher! I won’t be operated on by my butcher! And fainted away.

I.comprehension
1.true or false? justify all your answers with a quote (indicate the lines).
a. Dick was a doctor. false because he is a student.
b. He had to work during his free time to go on holiday. false because he had to work in his spare time and during the holidays to pay for his education.
c. At the butcher's shop, he did all the accounts. true because he went into a room behind the shop to do all the accounts.
d.In the hospital, he did the most difficult jobs. false because he was of course allowed to do only the simplest jobs.
e. That woman fell when she saw Dick. true because she will not be operated by its plugging.

2. Answer the following questions in your own words (develop your answer).
a. what did Dick have to do during his holidays? Why?
he had to work during the holidays to pay for his education
b.Where did he work during the day? What did he do exactly?
he works at the butcher and the hospital
c.What is the comon point between the two jobs he had?
it was paid for his education and had the same customers

Merci d'avance pour vos réponses.

Bonsoir,

e. That woman fell when she saw Dick. (quel verbe du texte se rapproche le plus de "she fell" elle tomba ?)true because she will(trouvez autre chose pour "vouloir"au passé, will est un auxiliaire de futur) not be operated by its plugging. (les mots corrects sont pourtant dans le texte)

2. Answer the following questions in your own words (develop your answer).(Vous n'avez pas trop développé)
a. what did Dick have to do during his holidays? Why?
he had to work during the holidays to pay for his education
b.Where did he work during the day? What did he do exactly?
he works(mauvais temps) at the butcher(manque quelque chose pour dire chez) and the hospital (Comme le fait remarquer May, la question porte sur le travail diurne et non nocturne)
c.What is the common point between the two jobs he had?
it was paid for his education and (sujet)had the same customers
(+ vêtements blancs)
