Bac/places and forms of power
Message de xou56 posté le 18-04-2016 à 21:18:09 (S | E | F)
bonsoir,
je passe mes oraux bientôt et j'aurai besoin d'aide pour m'aider à corriger mon travail s'il vous plait.
Merci d'avance pour vos réponses.

I am going to talk about the notion of « places and forms of power ». Power is the ability to influence the behavior of other people or the political or social authority exercised by a government, individuals or institutions. To me, medias are part of this notion because mass medias are visible to anyone, anywhere and everywhere. It makes easier to impose power on people. We will wonder why we must nuance the influence of medias. Firstly I will talk about printed press like newspapers, then about advertising, and finally about the internet.
I) PRINTED NEWS :
The main advantage of the printed press is that a very large part of the population has access to it, and so this is a way of being aware of the news. It is also a certified source of information contrary to the Internet where anybody can write what he wants to. This being said we must not forget that there is a form of selection of informations made by the newspapers : this is called censorship. This is usually made according to a political point of view. . Therefore the point of view used by the newspapers is not neutral and so they target a part of the population more than another.
II) PUBLICITY :
In our everyday life we are presented with advertising, even if we don’t want to : billboards in the streets, on tv, on the radio, in magazines, in buses, etc. As the way of advertising are very diversified, it attract a very large number of people, of every age. It is a way for the brand to promote their items and therefore to make bigger sale. Ads target a certain type of people, the aim is to push them to buy it : this is the consumer society. People are surrounded by ads : it can be a motto, or a melody that stick to your mind for a whole day. It unconsciously pushes you to go and buy the product it was praising. There is a very dishonest dimension when companies adapt their ads to the target audience : they want to make you buy the items at any price even if you don’t need it.
III) THE INTERNET :
The Internet is a very recent media. Almost everyone masters it nowadays, and studies even reveal that those who master it best are younger and younger. It is a direct and fast access to culture and knowledge. However, if it presents many positive points, the Internet may also be a source of dangers. For instance, websites have an access to our informations and even photos in the case of social networks. One of the best examples is Facebook, we all know that when we put a photo on the Internet, everyone can see it and we don’t possess it any longer. Facebook can do whatever it wants with it because it is now of the public sphere. Another danger of the Internet is cyberbullying. This is when people receive threatening messages, when other people threaten them with having an embarrassing pictures, personal emails or messages posted online. Indeed a survey showed that 39% of social network users had been cyber-bullied in some way. Finally, the Internet, a tool that seemed to be advantageous, can turn out to be very dangerous.
CONCLUSION :
If medias are today commonplace in our life, contrary to what one may think, they do not serve the general interest but only the interest of a handful of people. Even if we need medias to know what happens around us, we have to be careful about the source of the informations because they serve a point of view. In my opinion, generally speaking about medias, I think they give people too much informations, that is to say that sometimes medias should keep some informations quiet, as during war times or terrorist attacks.
