Bac/Espaces et échanges
Message de melflojc posté le 05-05-2016 à 14:47:15 (S | E | F)
Bonjour
je passe le Bac anglais à l'oral dans quelque temps et j'aimerais avoir des suggestions quant au script ci-dessous que je compte utiliser pour réviser cette notion.
Je vous remercie par avance de votre aide.

Hello, I’m going to talk about the notion of space and exchanges. First I would like to define what this notion is. The different spaces of the world like cities, regions, or nations are nowadays more and more connected to each other. Globalisation furthers various kinds of exchanges like exchanges of people, trade or information. In this respect, many global cities radiate economically, politically and culturally in the world like New York, London, or Singapore… That’s why we will deal with the question : how do global cities have an impact on people’s everyday lives ? First, we will focus on some advantages for the inhabitants of such a city and second we will see that a global city can present drawbacks too.

This kind of city improves the inhabitants’ quality of life by converting the space, as a result global cities create infrastructures and renovate spaces.
We have studied an iconographic document of Time Square before and after an urban project to widen the pedestrian area. Before (during) the project there was a lot of traffic and narrow saturated sidewalks, that were replaced afterwards by a larger pavement on both sides of the street.
This dramatic change not only improves the quality of life of the citizens because they feel more secure but it also encourages people to walk instead of taking the car.

In another example New York aims to develop means of transportation which are sustainable, available and reliable. In a web video, Janette Sadik-Khan, explains that the city has invested a lot in public transportation, for example in the creation of the 7 line subway project, and the creation of bus lanes and cycle paths. In this interview it is clear that this project aims to make New York a greener city.
We can conclude that improving the different spaces of a global city such as New York allows the inhabitants to use the public transport system more efficiently.
The advantage of living in a global city is that the inhabitants can travel easily using the public transport system and on foot.

The complexe nature of the layout of a global city also presents its advantages, for example in the usage of old spaces by restoring former infrastructures, as well as creating new spaces.
We studied a web report for Time magazine in which an architectural critic presents a restoration project of a former train line in New York City. At the beginning, the train line was located in the street but it was too dangerous for drivers and pedestrians. That’s why in 1934 the rails were raised to a higher level. Over time and with the disappearance of the factories in the neighborhood only the disused train line was left. However, in 1999, two inhabitants created an association in order to renovate the disused space. In 2003 the city organized a design contest to restore the area. The elevated railroad track was transformed into an innovative and contemporary public park called The High Line Park.
In my opinion this kind of layout is very effective for encouraging people to leave their houses and to exercise and relax whilst (while) commuting to work.
The advantage of living in a global city is that the spaces can be reused to benefit the inhabitants.

However, global cities aren’t always synonymous with advantages for their people. Whilst global cities have the advantages of extensive layout options and renovations, certain global cities also have to deal with many problems like weather anomalies and natural disasters.
In the British newspaper The Daily Mail, an article written in 2012 explains that New York City has developed dramatically over the last four centuries, reclaiming land from the ocean. However, all these reclaimed lands were flooded by Hurricane Sandy.
Certain global cities can’t spread out indefinitely because of the risk of natural disasters which can injure people or cause death.
The disadvantage of living in certain global cities is that the urban expansion will always be limited by the threat of natural disasters and the result of certain weather anomalies.

Nowadays big cities such as global cities have to deal with environmental issues like pollution. In the last few years, sustainable development has become a very important idea that cities shouldn't underestimate.
I learnt in a report that London suffered a major pollution catastrophe in 1952. Indeed, 12,000 inhabitants died because of the smog, which is a mix of smoke and fog.
This example shows that an ecological catastrophe can be very dangerous for a city’s inhabitants. That’s why big cities need an environmental policy.
The disadvantage of living in certain global cities is the potential impact of pollution on the inhabitants.

At first sight global cities are places where many people can have a good quality of life thanks to their different projects of urban layout and restoration, but in reality the impact on the inhabitants’ everyday lives can be negative because global cities have to deal with many problems of different kinds, like protecting and taking care of spaces, durably developing, and lastly fighting against pollution.
