Sentences /correction
Message from san99 posted on 08-06-2012 at 23:01:41 (D | E | F)
Hello,

Please read the sentences given below and give your opinion.
Thank you for your help.

The clothes he sent me are unfit on my body.
The book you are reading has very interesting facts and information.
The cream you applied on your face is expired.
The letter I gave him to post is empty.
The bottles you bought from the store are made of water.
Now what he would now is sleep on the couch.

Hello

The clothes he sent me are unfit on my body.
The book you are reading has very interesting facts and information. OK
The cream you applied on your face is expired. has expired is better
The letter I gave him to post is empty. OK
The bottles you bought from the store are made of water. This doesn't make any sense! Bottle are not made of water.
Now what he would now is sleep on the couch.

Hello!
In the last sentence, the verb after"would" is omitted..
I suppose,it's "do"? Now,what he would do is sleep on the couch. OR What he would do now is (to) sleep on the couch.

yes, the omitted word is "do". Now the correct sentence is, now what he would do is sleep on the couch.

Hello,
a couple of small tips.
Creams, toiletries and also food products have a "sell-by" or "use-by" date. An expiry date (or time) is generally used for some kind of licence, authorisation or permit.
So in current British English, we would say that a cream, or a food-item, was "past its sell-by date".

In addition, surely it's the envelope which is empty, not the letter?

ok got your point. Whether the cream is expired or has passed its sells by date it gives the same impression, I think.
We rarely say " Please post this envelope", I agree with you that the sentence should be " The envelope was empty not the letter."
Thanks for posting your answer.
