"SAVING SAMOA'S TROPICAL RAINFORESTS" ou comment l'argent et le commerce
auraient pu prendre le dessus sur l'environnement et la nature, si une personne
  ne s'y était pas opposée.

 SAVING SAMOA'S TROPICAL RAINFORESTS.
Not many people have saved a rainforest from the bulldozers and chainsaws, but
Dr Paul Cox has. When a logging company offered the village of Falealupo, on
Savaii Island, $US 55,000 to cut down their rainforest, the villagers were tempted
because they needed the money to build a new primary school.
But, when Cox, an American botanist, heard about it, he raised $US 55,000 with
the help of some American businessmen. They offered the money to the village
if they promised not to cut down the forest for 50 years.
The village council of chiefs was amazed. They couldn't believe that anyone
would pay them so much money to preserve the 30,000 acre rainforest. It was
an offer the village chiefs couldn't refuse. They received money for the new
school and they kept their forest. For once, a logging company lost out, and
a small tropical forest was saved.
Sadly, the forest was badly damaged in an accidental fire in 1982.
