HOW ARE ENGLISH TEACHERS RECRUITED IN FRANCE?
Well, it's pretty simple... no, in fact, it's a bit difficult. Well, let's start from the beginning.
When you're 18, you take the "Baccalauréat" - with compulsory examinations in mathematics, English/German/Spanish, history-geography, science, sports... and so on... It's a very big exam taking place in June.
If you pass it, you are allowed to study at University. So, you study English for 3 years at university and you get a "Licence" (it is very hard to get one). Then you can enter a special school which is specialised in training teachers: the "I.U.F.M." (Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres) and you prepare for the very very difficult exam (the C.A.P.E.S.) which will take place at the end of the year. Written examinations are taken in Mars. If you have a good average, you are allowed to take the oral examinations in June. If you pass them (lucky you! only 1,000 / 8200+ succeed!), you become a student teacher and you enter the second year of the IUFM.
You are no longer a student, but a student teacher, and you are paid. Your time is divided into 2 different things: the courses you give in a school (with the help of an experienced teacher) + the courses you attend at the IUFM.
There are 3 conditions to become a full teacher:
1) At the end of the year, you are required to defend a dissertation (30 pages) you've built on a topic related to your English courses;
2) You are inspected twice (more if there are any problems) during the school year;
3) The IUFM is happy with your school attendance and your involvement in the courses.
If everything is okay (and only in that case), you become a teacher. From then on, you are allowed to take part in the French "mutation", that is to say that you can be sure that you are going to have a post... somewhere in France.
If you have found this page interesting, why not write a paragraph about the way teachers are recruited in your own country? (it could be shorter or bigger...). It will be published (if you don't want your name to be published, please tell me).
I'm ready to do a Japanese page... a German page... any pages about other countries... It's up to you...
Please use this form (don't forget to specify your country!)
