    TEXTE

MOST REMOTE VILLAGE HAS THE CLEANEST AIR
    By Terry Kirby Chief Reporter

The good news is that the villagers enjoy the cleanest air in England and are surrounded by wildlife, unspoilt forest and rolling green hills... The bad news is that shopping involves a 100-mile round trip.

That is life for the 200 or so people in the village of Kielder, Northumberland, which was named yesterday as probably the least polluted place in England. Last year, tourism officials said it was the most remote village in England.

The village is in Kielder Forest Park, which comprises 60,000 hectares of planted forest and Kielder Water, the largest man-made lake in western Europe, near the border with Scotland, it is home to England's largest colony of red squirrels, herds of deers and scarce birds.

Kielder was named the least polluted area in England by Country LIfe Magazine, which assessed he impact of air, noise and light pollution. It found that more than 90 per cent of England was affected by pollution and that only the most rural areas, such as Northumberland, were relatively pollution-free. There had been a big increase in air, noise and light pollution in the past decade. London and the South-East were the worst hit with Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield also badly contaminated.

Only one tenth of the country now experiences a truly dark night after light pollution rose by a quarter between 1993 and 2000. An increase in street lamps, floodlights at sports venues and security lights at private homes has been blamed.
