Virtually no history of the modern civil rights movement in the United States fails to mention the role of Rosa Parks. She tells her own story in The Autobiography of Rosa Parks (1990). Others relate her history in a book entitled Don't Ride the Bus on Monday by Louise Meriwether (1973) and in two children's books, one by Eloise Greenfield, Rosa Parks (1973) and another by Kai Friese, Rosa Parks (1990). Rosa Parks, the black whose 1955 protest action in Alabama marked the of the modern US civil rights movement, has at the age of 92. Mrs Parks' refusal to her seat to a white man on a bus prompted a mass black boycott of , organised Baptist minister Martin Luther King Jr. His protest movement brought about the Civil Rights Act, which outlawed racial in the US. Mrs Parks' lawyer said she died in her at her home in Detroit, Michigan. 'She sat down in order we all might stand up - - and the walls of segregation came ,' civil rights leader Jesse Jackson said. Mrs Parks was a seamstress when she made history. On 1 December 1955, she on a bus in Montgomery a white man demanded her seat. Mrs Parks refused, the rules which required blacks to give up their seats to whites. She was arrested and fined . Mrs Parks was the first black Montgomery bus rider to be detained for to give up a seat, but she was the first to challenge the law. Her arrest triggered a of the bus system organised by the then little-known Rev Luther King Jr. The protest led to the of the transport system. Mrs Parks and her husband, Raymond, moved to Detroit in 1957, after she lost her job and received numerous in Alabama.
