1.  There is, there are ou ago?

Pour parler du temps qui s'est écoulé entre un fait révolu et le moment présent on utilise  AGO
Je l'ai vu il y a une semaine.I saw him a week ago.
Le Big Bang s'est produit il y a longtemps.The Big Bang happened a long time ago.
 Ago se place après l'expression de temps.    L'action est passée et datée, on utilise le prétérit   
  Pour parler de l'existence d'une chose ou d'une situation on utilise THERE IS, THERE ARE
Il y a un problème avec le chauffe-eau.There is a problem with the water-heater.
Il y a quelques œufs dans le réfrigérateur.There are a few eggs in the fridge.
             there is (there's) : il y a + singulier            there are (there're): il y a + pluriel
Remarque :
Quand plusieurs sujets suivent there is / are l'accord se fait avec le premier
There is a shepherd, a dog and twenty sheep in the meadow.
There are twenty sheep and a dog in the meadow.
                                  
I cooked a lot two days ago.There is still a piece of cake,and there are four crumpets too

2. There is, there are: formes interrogatives, négatives et interro-négatives

                            Formes interrogatives: is there...?, are there...?  (y a-t-il...?)
Is there a pilot on board the plane?Y a-t-il un pilote dans l'avion?
How many stars are there in the sky?Combien y a-t-il d'étoiles dans le ciel?
Formes négatives: there is not (there's not / there isn't) there are not (there're not/ there aren't)
There isn't much sugar.Il n'y a pas beaucoup de sucre.
There aren't any polar bears in Antarctica.Il n'y a pas d'ours polaires en Antarctique.
             Formes interro-négatives: isn't there...?      aren't there...?   (n'y a-t-il pas)
Why isn't there a Nobel prize in Mathematics?Pourquoi n'y a-t-il pas de prix Nobel de Mathématiques?

               
I'd like to make a cake.
Are there any eggs in the fridge?
Yes but I think
there isn't enough butter.

3. There peut être suivi de 'be' à tous les temps

There was a meeting yesterday.Il y avait une réunion hier.
Were there a lot of people at this meeting?Y avait-il beaucoup de monde à cette réunion?
There had already been a meeting the week before.Il y avait déjà eu une réunion la semaine dernière.
There will be another meeting next week.Il y aura une autre réunion la semaine prochaine.
There have been several meetings this month.Il y a eu plusieurs réunions ce mois-ci.
There will have been five meetings by the end of the month.Il y aura eu cinq réunions d'ici la fin du mois.

     
If there hadn't been the meetingI would have stayed at home
