"A friend is someone, who upon seeing another friend in immense pain, would rather be the one experiencing the pain than to have to watch their friend suffer."
Can you give me the equivalent in French?

I have to correct the sentence. There's a mistake inside.
A friend is someone, who upon seeing another friend in immense pain, would rather be the one experiencing the pain than to have to watch
It is either his friend suffer either their friends suffer.
Un ami est quelqu'un, qui en voyant uin autre ami plongé dans une immense peine, préférera être celui qui fait face à la douleur que celui doit regarder son ami souffrir.
I have add the verb plonger because of the in.
I have change douleur for pain par peine because it is probably in mind and not physical. You can also use detresse if you want to emphasise.
the one is always celui. exemple Uther you're not the one who will be king.
Uther tu n'est pas celui qui sera roi.
experiencing the pain = faire face
because you never would test volontary pain in french.

I note here that "they" is commonly (though incorrectly) used for a person whose gender is undetermined.
Have you ever asked someone for their phone number?
