Exercice 42/Hold on!
Message de here4u posté le 22-05-2015 à 18:03:17 (S | E | F)
Hello Dear All ! and future Newcomers...

Yes, N° 41 was a real and you did great! Thank you very much for your perseverance and tenacity ... The individual corrections must have reached you by now, and the collective one will be posted tonight, as planned.
I know that some fans are champing at the bit for the following one! Here it is... totally original and directly out of my bullying mind... (Just kidding!) It is a genuine and the collective correction will be out on May Saturday 30th. Good luck !

I) Translate into English:

II) Complete the sentences, using different modals + have + past participle:
8) I really can’t understand why he hasn’t arrived yet. He …
9) It took her three hours to do the ironing. It…
10) I’ve been trying to solve this problem for hours. There…

III) Translate into French:
“In a town like London, there are plenty of not quite certifiable lunatics walking the streets, and they tend to gravitate towards bookshops because a bookshop is one of the few places where you can hang about for a long time without spending any money. In the end, one gets to know these people almost at a glance. For all their big talk there is something moth-eaten and aimless about them. […] None of them, I noticed, ever attempted to take books away without paying for them. Merely to order them was enough – it gave them, I suppose, the illusion that they were spending real money.”

Thanks again for this quite interesting exercise I've just finished, which you may correct whenever you please
I hope I didn't get the wrong meaning for "not quite certifiable lunatics"

I)
1) I gave him what little money I had with me. He claimed he would give it back when he found the purse he had lost during the journey.
2) He wanted to know how they had become homeless and how they had coped with this desperate situation at the beginning.
3) "Once you've done it, you'll be really happy..." "Yes, but until such time as I reach the top, it will be too late !"
4) You won't be allowed to take a day off unless you ask your employer first !
5) My mobile phone was stolen while I was peacefully sitting waiting for you. Why were you so late ?
6) I think I'll manage to talk him out of buying a motorbike if I offer him my car instead.
7) You'll hardly need to talk. Anyone will give you what you'll need at that time !

II)
8) I really can’t understand why he hasn’t arrived yet. He ensured he would be here by 8 o'clock for dinner ! We've been waiting for him for half an hour now ! He could have called a dozen times, couldn't he ?
9) It took her three hours to do the ironing. It must have been quite a burdensome task ! Had she been a witch, it would only have taken her a second to get the job done.
10) I’ve been trying to solve this problem for hours. There must have been a mistake in the statement given by our teacher. Otherwise, maybe I should have been more careful while taking notes.

III)

Hello Here
Here is my first part. Thank you for this *** stars( on le vaut bien comme dit l'Oréal!

1) I gave him what little money I had with me. He claimed he would give it back to me, when he found the purse; he had lost during the journey.
2) He wanted to know how they had become homeless and how they had coped with this desperate situation at the beginning.
3) Once you do that, you'll be really happy...’Yes, but until such time as I reach the way up there, it will be too late
4) You won't be allowed to take a day off unless you ask your boss first!
5) I had my mobile stolen while I was peacefully sitting waiting for you. Why were you so late ?
6) I think I'll manage to persuade him not to buy a motorbike if I offer him my car instead.
7) You'll hardly need to talk. Anyone will give you what you'll need at that moment !

see you later for the second part
Here is the second part

8) I really can’t understand why he hasn’t arrived yet. However I thought: he must have met a friend in the street and as the men are as talkative as the women, he will be late.
9) It took her three hours to do the ironing. It could have been more pleasant if she had given all this hard housework to the dry cleaner. This solution costs the earth however it is an expeditious one. Do you agree with me?
10) I’ve been trying to solve this problem for hours.without finding the write solution In fact I should have opened my English grammar this one written by an excellent English teacher.there are a lots of examples dealing with this problem.

My translation

Thank Here for all these exercises
YOU CAN CORRECT THEM. Have a nice day

Dear here4u,
Here’s my try, which I carried out helped by the Force.

I) Translate into English:
I gave him the little money I had in my pocket. He has ensured he would have repaid me as soon as he had found the wallet he has lost on the way.
He wanted to know how they had become homeless and how they had faced that desperate situation.
Once you get it done, you’ll be really happy… Yes, but by the time I’ll get up to there, it would be too late.
You won't be allowed to take a day off, unless you ask your boss before.
While I was quietly sitting there, waiting for you to come, I was stolen my watch. Why did you come so late?
I do think I’ll succeed in dissuading him to buy a motorbike if I offer my car instead.
You hardly are expected to say something. Anyone will give you what you would need that moment
II) Complete the sentences, using different modals + have + past participle:
8) I really can’t understand why he hasn’t arrived yet….He might only have had a car accident…
9) It took her three hours to do the ironing. It… was left a so big heap of linen to be ironed, that she wasn't able to carry out that chore in a shorter time.
10) I have been trying to solve thisproblem for hours. There… would have been several options which might have given a provisional solution, but none of them are good enough. So I still don’t know how to get the trouble forever out.
III) Translate into French:
“In a town like London, there are plenty of not certifiable lunatics walking the streets, and they tend to gravitate towards bookshops because a bookshop is one of the few places where you can hang about for a long time without spending any money. In the end, one gets to know these people almost at a glance. For all their big talk there is something moth-eaten and aimless about them. […] None of them, I noticed, ever attempted to take books away without paying for them. Merely to order them was enough – it gave them, I suppose, the illusion that they were spending real money.”

G. Orwell, Bookshop Memories Penguin editions. 1936

I thank you very much for the nice exercise.
Waiting for the next one to come, I remain, champing at the bit, and wishing
you a pleasant week.
Your friendly
Joe39

Bonjour here4u,

I) Translate into English:
I gave him the little money I had on me. He insisted he would get it back when he would have find out the purse he had lost during the way.
He wanted to know how they had become homeless and how initially they dealt with this hopeless situation.
Once you'll have done it, you'll be really happy... ' yes, but by the time I reach up there, it will be too late.
You won't be able to take a day off, unless at first you ask for your boss.
My cellphone had been stolen while I was quietly sitting, waiting for you.Why have you been so delayed?
I believe I'll make him change his mind of buying a motorbike if I suggest my car instead...
You'll barely have to speak. Anyone will give you what you'll need at this time!

II) Complete the sentences, using different modals + have + past participle:
8) I really can’t understand why he hasn’t arrived yet. He might have been stuck in a traffic-jam.
9) It took her three hours to do the ironing. It could have been done in one hour.
10) I’ve been trying to solve this problem for hours. There would have been a simple way to do but I can't find it.

And thank you in advance for the correction !

I) Translate into English:
1) I gave him what little money I was carrying. He assured me that he would give it back to me when he recovered the purse he had lost during the journey.
2) He wanted to know how they became homeless and how, at the beginning, they coped with this desperate situation.
3)'Once you have done it, you will be really happy...'
'Yes, but by the time I arrive up there, it will be too late !'
4) You will not be allowed to take a day off unless you ask your boss for it first !
5) My phone was stolen while I was quietly sitting waiting for you. Why were you so late ?
6) I think that I will manage to persuade him not to buy a motorcycle if I offer my car instead...
7) It will be hardly necessary that you speak. Anyone will give you what you will need at that time.

II) Complete the sentences, using different modals + have + past participle:
8) I really can’t understand why he hasn’t arrived yet. He could have told us that he was going to be late.
9) It took her three hours to do the ironing. It would have taken her one hour if she had used a garment steamer.
10) I’ve been trying to solve this problem for hours. There should have been more explanations.

Hello here4u,

I – Translate into English
- I gave him the little money I had. He said he’d give it back to me when he found back the wallet he lost on his way
- He wanted to know how they had become homeless and how, at first, they had dealt with this desperate situation
- Once you have done it you’ll be very happy… Yes, but it might be too late when I get up there
- You won’t be able to take a day off unless you ask your boss first
- I had my phone stolen as I was quietly sitting waiting for you. Why have you been so late ?
- I think I can talk him out of buying a bike if I offer him my car instead
- You will hardly have to speak. Anyone will give you what you need at that time

II – Complete the sentences
- I really can’t understand why he hasn’t arrived yet. He may have been delayed by the traffic
- It took her three hours to do the ironing. It could have been faster had she bought a steam iron
- I’ve been trying to solve this problem for hours. There must have been some mistake in the wording

Thank you so much again for your exercises and your correction -

Sorry for being so late, dear Here4u,
and for giving you such an unfinished work, but, at my age, I need time and I feel unable to " tenir la cadence" !!!
Anyway, thank you so much for this new exercise.

I) Translate into English:
I gave him what little money I had on me. He claimed he would give it back as soon as he had found his purse that he'd lost on his way.

He wanted to know the reason why they'd become homeless and how they'd faced up from the start to their plight.

" Once you do it , you'll be really happy." - " All right but, by the time I get the top, it'll be too late!"

Unless you ask your boss first, you won't be able to get some days off.

I had my phone stolen while quietly sitting waiting for you. Why did you arrive so late?

I may be able to talk him out of buying a motobike if I suggest him my own car instead...

You'll hardly have to speak. At that point, you'll be given what you need ( by anybody?)

Have a pleasant Sunday!

Hello Lakata !
I'm sorry you rushed to do the exercise... You could have posted it after the correction... Poor thing...

Réponse : Exercice 42/Hold on! de here4u, postée le 31-05-2015 à 00:19:43 (S | E)
Hello, all of you !

Here are the explanations of the exercises you did so well! Congratulations to all of you I know they required quite a lot of work. Tell me if you want more time and feel free to do what you can...(and skip what you can't!)

I gave him what little money I had on me. He asserted/claimed that he would give it back to me when he had found the purse he had lost along the way.

- ‘the little money I had’ = possible mais moins idiomatique. ‘what little money’ = ‘the little money that…’ little + indénombrable singulier.

He wanted to know how they had become homeless and what they did, at first, to cope with this desperate situation.

(‘how they had become’)
- Faire face à : deal with/face up to/ cope with

Once you have done it, you’ll be very happy… Yes, but by the time I get up there, it will be too late!

You won’t be allowed to take a day off, unless you ask your boss first.

I had my cell phone stolen while I was quietly sitting, waiting for you. Why were you so late?

I think I’ll manage to talk him out of buying a motorcycle if I offer him my car instead.

- parvenir à = réussir à = manage to /succeed in + ing.
- dissuader de : n’oubliez pas la forme idiomatique : to XXXX (= moyen) somebody out of doing something. 'to threaten him out of ...', 'to punch him into...', 'tickle her into ...'
Attention !

You’ll hardly need to speak. Anyone will give you what you need at that moment.

II) Complete the sentences, using different modals + have + past participle :

8) I really can’t understand why he hasn’t arrived yet. He… may have forgotten the right address…

9) It took her three hours to do the ironing. It… should have been a much quicker chore …

10) I’ve been trying to solve this problem for hours. There… must have been a mistake in the instructions.

G. Orwell, Bookshop Memories

(1) A lunatic (= FAUX AMI !)
(6) 'almost' => ou presque
(7) For all … for all = despite: For all her qualifications, she's still useless at the job.= (= wordreference.com) Malgré /En dépit de ses qualifications, elle est incompétente pour ce poste.
