Students work together in pairs or groups to think of words that fit a selected topic and that also begin with a pre-determined letter. For example, the topic might be: Clothing items. The chosen letter might be "S." Students try to think of any clothing items that begin with the letter "S," i.e., Socks, Sweater, Shirt, Shawl, Shoes, Slacks, Sandals, Suit, Scarf, etc.

    Another example topic might be: Something that grows. Using the chosen letter "S," students might come up with Spinach, Seaweed, Seeds, Savings, Salamanders, not to mention the philosophical answers such as Sadness, Self-confidence, Suspicion ,etc.

    Part of the fun of this lesson is encouraging students to explain why they think an item belongs in a specific category.

    There are nine categories; simply by changing the target letter, this worksheet can be used over and over.
